While Michelle rests in the other room, having been struggling with a cold for the last day and a half brought about by the rapid temperature flux we both continually experienced in Nha Trang (high thirties on the streets and near sub-zero indoors) I am sitting out on our balcony overlooking the country mountainous vista of Dalat; surrounded by flowers of every kind trees and shrub that our local squirrel has been frolicking in, and beyond the mass number of green houses in the distance, indeed beyond the mountains themselves the sound of music floating in the breeze. The day started early but sluggish, with both of us possibly on the verge of a cold and our pillows too hard, the last few nights sleep in Nha Trang has been a struggle, usually requiring the air ... read more

Our final morning in Saigon was a rather slow affair as we had already done many of the sights close to the hotel, meaning that all we had to do was pack up our stuff and look forward to the bus ride to Dalat, a city up in the hills of Centrel Vietnam, with a colonial feel to it. Compared to many of the bus journeys we had taken so far in Vietnam the ride to Dalat was a slow, if rather enjoyable ride, certainly when you got up in the hills and had a look at some of the stunning views. It was however, a rather slow bus ride, though this never seemed to stop the bus driver from using his horn every few seconds It was evening when we eventually arrived in Dalat and, ... read more

After the adventure to get there, the serenity of Dalat was very welcoming. Dalat is a town in the mountainous regions of South Central Vietnam, set amongst some of the most picturesque scenery and dotted with art deco buildings, and buildings of European style. The town features a miniature version of the Eiffel Tower, illustrating its strong French colonial roots. Although slowly opening up to tourism, Dalat is still on relatively few foreigners’ tourist trails – in fact, we saw hardly any other western travellers. It appears to cater for wealthy Vietnamese on weekend getaways. Having had a relaxing night the previous evening, unwinding in a couple of bars and enjoying some local food, we made an early start to explore the town. As most of the places we wanted to visit were fairly central we ... read more

From Nha Trang to Dalat After a couple of days of sweltering by the beach, we arranged our onward travel to Dalat, this time by bus. Everybody had told us when booking tickets to ensure we took a route on the new road, as this is a few hours shorter. When we saw our transport, a modern air-conditioned coach, we were expecting a pleasant, relaxing journey. On the road, we quickly realised however that ‘new road’ doesn’t mean ‘finished road’, as the bus driver seemingly thinks he’s in some sort of all-terrain vehicle and turns on to a wide and bumpy dirt track. After navigating our way around piles of chippings and road building vehicles, plus the odd pig, thankfully the road smoothed out. Then we reached the highlands, where the road narrowed, warning signs for ... read more

Our trip to Da Lat seemed cursed from the start. First our flight was cancelled. The our alternative, the overnight buses, were all full because of a national holiday. And so, at 5 o’clock in the morning, we climbed bleary eyed into a car for the drive. Seven sleepless hours later we began the final climb to Da Lat. The road winds up tree-covered mountains, through the occasional village. Great views but I was glad of the travel tablet. The plan had been to go on a motorbike tour but, because of the national holiday, it was impossible to get five Easy Riders. This was a big disappointment but an amble around Da Lat was nice. The locals are very friendly, with children stopping us to talk in the streets. We bought tea and coffee which ... read more

I'd have stayed longer in Saigon - it's definitely a place I'd like to come back to sometime, but there's a lot to see in Vietnam and I intend to spend some time in Laos and Northern Thailand before my travelling fund runs too low. Da Lat doesn't feature on the traditional south-north backpackers' route through Vietnam - more people go via Mui Ne or straight to Nha Trang - but it sounded like an interesting and attractive place so I took a morning Phuong Trang bus, arriving there mid-afternoon. On the bus a local student with an English grammar workbook sat next to me, we chatted about learning English and she taught me some Vietnamese words, or at least tried to as my attempts at pronunciation were far inferior to her spoken English. Vietnamese is ... read more

Hello again family and friends! After a comfortable four hour bus ride norht, we arrived at the beach resort town of Mui Ne. The area is known for its excellent kite boarding conditions. Kites from all over the world conveine here because of the moderate and constant winds. The weather is great a lovely average of 30 degrees. Besides the wind sports there are many beautiful up-scale resorts, a nice beach and a fairly strong surf. The highlight for us is our resort - Tien Dat (Blue Waves). We certainly hit the jackpot here. We have a spacious and beautiful deluxe suite with a large open balcony within steps of one of the awesome pools. So I am back to my swimming routine and of course lounging in the pool as well. It is a very ... read more

Dalet here, saying xin chao Up early in Da Lat, this frenchy-feeling village out of the coast. It's cold here - by which i mean I can wear trousers. I went out with the aforementioned easy-riders today. Mine was a bloke called "Windy". He had no flatulence (sp) trouble as far as I could see/smell so the name apparantly came from his speed. That was not the case, but his ability to receive a phone call up a windy mountain road was impressive - negotiating mental drivers (and mental driving) one handed in perilous circs. Have to praise the easy-riders though - it was great to see the Vietnam highlands countryside from the back of a cruising motorbike - some beautiful landscapes and a great way to see Vietnam unseen by us stinking westerners! With these ... read more

One of our favourite places so far. Cool, calm and charming, Dalat is like no where else we have been. As it is in the Central Highlands, it has completely different scenery. Conifers replace palm trees, mountains replace long stretches of sand, and cool evenings replace the hot, humid ones. The air temperature here was much cooler yet the sun was still as hot as ever, but just that slight difference made walking around a lot easier. The hills however did not, and we spent ages walking up and down them. The town is situated around a beautiful lake (which looked smaller than it was), and we spent the afternoon wandering around it, stopping off at a well kept flower park along the way. The park had some lovely views as well as cheap yummy ice-cream ... read more

What to stay about Dalat? Well, it’s cold, it’s made from concrete and if it really is the prime honeymoon destination of Vietnam I’ll eat my hat. We only stayed two nights in the end and then all decided to hit the beach instead. The one good thing about Dalat was discovering Dalat wine. The climate up in the mountains isn’t too dissimilar to parts of northern Italy or chilie or somewhere that makes good wine. And thus you could get a pretty pleasant bottle of plonk for about £2. It was with sore heads we got on he bus to Muine the next morning, because who wouldn’t want to go careering down the side of a mountain in a bus with a hangover??? Note to all: you can get Dalat wine elsewhere in Vietnam, don’t ... read more
