Nha Trang gave us our first big beach experience since we've arrived in Vietnam and for many it appears to be paradise. We met numerous ex-pats who are now calling this city on the water and sand..home. Lobster and seafood of all types are sold by pajamaed women slung with flexing bamboo rods over their shoulders and perfectly balanced baskets on each end. On one end, 30 pounds of seafood, the other 30 pounds of boiling water in a pot. The beach is long and full of parks and appears to be well preserved from the large touristy resorts who's shadows loom over the sand. We found a good, clean mini hotel named Ha Van with an outstanding roof top bar giving one a nice view of the city and cheap, cold beer. While staying there, ... read more

Hi! So yesterday we did a hike up in the mountains and countryside. There was six of us doing the hike plus three guides! The total distance we walked was 18 Km lots of ups and downs and two very scary bridges going across the river, these bridges are used by the farmers often to take the bags of coffee beans across, we had trouble crossing using both hands to hold on!!! We walked through the coffee plantations and hiked up a mountain from which we had an amazing view! We had lunch at the top of the mountain our guides set up this amazing picnic bread ham, tomatoes, cucumber, pineapple, lichies, bananas, peanut butter, cheese! It was great we all sat down in the middle of nowhere at the top of the mountain. We then hiked ... read more

We are staying in a lovely hotel called Dreams although our room is on the top floor and we have to climb up all the stairs every time we are on the same floor as the Jacuzzi!!!! Its outdoors with a view of Da lat which is quite nice in the cold weather! It's not that cold here more like light jumper weather which is a lovely refreshing change! As soon as you walk into the streets though the Easy Riders come and try to make you book a tour with them, the easy riders are guys on motorbikes that take you around for either day trips ... read more

Mountains and beaches.... After hopping a bus out of Saigon I found myself in some real beautiful country in and around Da Lat. Being the only westerner on the bus it was an interesting 5 days in town as tourist season is not occurring so the only visitors were honey-mooning Vietnamese (per LP). I certainly enjoyed the change in climate, as much as I have had some great experiences at all of the coastal towns I've visited I'm a mountain girl at heart and felt right at home with the fresh but crisp mountain air. Da Lat is located in the southern parts of the Central Highlands at 1500 m (4,920 ft) above sea level on the Langbiang Plateau. The architecture is French Colonial and colorful against the green hilltops. Spent a few days relaxing and ... read more

Day 42 Monday June 15, 2009 Rented the motorbike again and had breakfast at the Tuong Vy Cafe, very good. Great food, but no menus in english. We were lucky enough to find a waitress that knew some english and we were able to order. We went back to Vietnam Airlines to try for like the 3rd time to change our tickets to go to Cambodia to a different day. We bought a series of tickets to take us from one country to the next and part of the special package was that we could change the dates up to 24 hours in advance with no charges. We started last Thursday by calling them on the cell phone during our 6 hour bus ride and Thai Airlines said they couldn't help us even though we booked ... read more

Day 41 Sunday June 14, 2009 Had breakfast at the fake "Peace Cafe"(64 Truong Cong Dinh). Very good food. Rented a nice motorbike from our hotel for $5 for the day and went around the town to do some sight seeing. Our 1st stop was the Lake of Sighs (and park) to ride horses around the lake (not nearly as romantic as it sounds, it ended up being a pony ride around the park). 2nd stop Datanla Falls to take a roller coaster ride downhill to the base of the falls. We had way more fun than adults should have on this thing=) 3rd stopped for lunch at the real Peace Cafe owned by Tu Anh (57 Truong Cong Dinh). Apparently she rented the building at the other address for her restaurant and when she moved ... read more

Day 40 Saturday June 13, 2009 We have been traveling 40 days/ 40 nights. We arrived in Nha Trang at 6am and switched buses to take us onto Dalat, a little town in the mountains in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The roads up the mountain were long, windy, and hot (poor A/C). This bus was way too big to be traversing up these narrow roads! I don't even want to know how many motobikes we ran off the road, but the horns were blaring all the way up the mountain. We stopped twice, once for a potty break and then for lunch. The toilets in the women's restroom as this bus stop were interesting. After consulting with some British girls, we decided that the stalls were for privacy only as there were no toilets, not ... read more

10 June (Wednesday) - We started the day with an American breakfast at the restaurant where we ate the evening before. By 10 AM we were ready to explore areas around Dalat. Our first stop was "the peaks" or Langbian Mountain which we had climbed as elementary school kids. I remembering racing to see who could get to the top first. Fortunately, today they have built a road to the top where there is a restaurant and tourist stuff...the ubiquitous horse rides and vendors selling knitted bags. We had to pay to ride a Russian built jeep the fifteen minute ride up the mountain which sure beat hiking! I met several Vietnamese students from Hanoi who wanted to practice their English and have pictures taken with me. After a half hour or so we returned down ... read more

The purpose of the trip to Dalat, Vietnam was to visit our old school campus to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the school in 1929. This was the boarding school for missionaries kids from the Southeast Asian area. Our guide had worked 8 months to obtain permission for us to visit the school. The school now teaches village, town, city, and provincial administrators. I was accompanied by three fellow alumni and my son, Will. Barb had attended Dalat School in Vietnam from 1954 to 1965, Ruth attended from 1957 to 1965, John attended from 1956 to 1965 and I attended from 1956 to 1964. All four of us came from Thailand, and three of us graduated in 1968 when the school was located in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia (now it is in ... read more

8 June (Monday) - We departed Saigon about 8:30 for the 300 km drive to Dalat. At 100 km/hr that should have taken 3 hours. However, with the heavy traffic getting out of Saigon, the poor road conditions enroute, and stops along the way to take pictures of things we had remembered from our last drive up this road in 1960, the trip took until 5:30 PM. Out first stop was to take pictures of the rubber tree plantations and the harvesting of the white rubber sap. Then it was th large boulders near the half way point. Then it was for late lunch in the region where they grow coffee now. Not being a coffee fanatic I didn't buy any, but Barb did. Finally, about 10 km before arriving in Dalat we stopped at Prenn ... read more
