Hiya, hope you’re all enjoying the Summer weather back in Blighty, it’s gradually getting more and more humid over here, and so the sweat is literally dripping off me. Anyway, I’ve been in the Central Highlands, now I’m further south… Dalat When I arrived in Dalat it was cool, quite literally! All around me were local Vietnamese wearing jackets and coats and truth be told, it was a bit on the cool side, but after months of hot and humid weather, it was refreshing. This place is hyped as some kind of French colonial Alpine resort but it’s not really. It’s true there are lots of villas, if you can see them hidden between the ugly Chinese built hotels. It’s also definitely hilly and there are definite mountains surrounding the town. I guess Dalat is of ... read more

After Saigon I chose to go to Da Lat based almost completely on its weather. Its in the central highlands and much cooler than any place I have been since leaving the states in January. I have been sweating for four months. Luckily Da Lat is fantastic; there is no other city like it in Vietnam. The city of about 100,000 is centered around a lake surrounded by hills and mountains. In the center everything looks stacked upon each other. The French built a lot of villas here and used it as a vacation spot to get out of the heat. Some say it is a little remiscent of the French Alps. A clean, colorful city surrounded by pine forests in the mountains. There is not a straight road here. I kept getting lost while riding ... read more

A Few Days in the Highlands 6 April 09 - DA LAT We decided to fly to Da Lat, instead of an 8 hour bus ride. The flight from Saigon to Da Lat was very easy and again we were surprised at how empty the airport was; both the international side when we arrived and the domestic when we left. It took us all of about 20 minutes to get checked in, zip through security and get to our gate. They had a nice café at the gate area so we staked out a table and had some iced coffee and a hearty meal. For once the airport food was not a total rip-off. We spent less than $10 USD for plenty of food and drink. It has been difficult to spend more than $10 ... read more

Wow what an amazing 3 days so far!! We're currently 3 days drive out of Dalat, in a remote town near the Cambodian border, although it is quite a big town called Play Cu. Just finished our 3rd day on the bike and I think we'll have 3 more before we get into Hoi An, our final destination. So been on the bikes for about 9 hours a day, about 6 hours driving (150km - 200km a day) with lots of little stops seeing various things. Been really enjoying the whole process and being on the bikes makes you feel much closer to your surroundings than if you were in a bus or car. The surroundings we've been driving though are probably the best I've ever seen, I seriously recommend to anyone to come here and ... read more

Arrived in Dalat after a bit of a mad bus journey. Was a smallish bus and full, (although not as packed as they were in Africa) and the roads were surfaced but with loads of potholes as we were winding up the mountain. Weren't that many cars on the road, but some had broken down or stopped for whatever reason, and our driver always stopped and hopped out to have a chat! Dalat is a bit of a random town, kitsch is the best way to describe it (the guidebook says so and does Helen, I've never heard of that word before). And the weather is very English, we walked around a lake yesterday and it started to rain - cold rain!! I'd forgotten how miserable cold rain is! It's like England towards the end of ... read more

We made our way to Dalat on the open tour bus, this is basically an open ticket that stops at all the main towns on the way from Saigon to Hanoi. We had only booked it on the way up to Hue though because we wanted the freedom to visit the smaller towns there which are not included on the open tour bus but for our journey up to Hue it suited us perfectly and is pretty cheap too. We arrived in Dalat at around 3pm and found a good guesthouse opposite the tour agency office where our bus dropped us off. The difference in the weather here compared to Saigon is dramatic. This is because Dalat sits at 1000m above sea level so is much cooler and cloudier than the lowlands we'd been used to, ... read more

You see i have not written in a while because i have been laying on a beach, drinking beer, relaxing and reading my book and then Robin and i went up north to Dalat where the computers were virus filled! So let me get you up to speed! Robin and I spend our last day in Mui Ne on the beach... well pardon me, more like i spent about 20 min on the beach until i felt that i was burning! Yes yes i put on sunscreen. SPF 30! So I decided that I would stay in that day and read my book and just put some lotion on my "sunburn". As I was reading the back of the lotion bottle that I had been using I read "WARNING: Do not use if you are going ... read more

Wohoo-my turn again-apparently more people read the blog when I wrote it than when Gaz does so he's letting me have another chance! We travelled to Dalat from Saigon on a horrendous 9 hour bus journey where the driver insisted on stopping every 10 minutes to pick up or drop off his friends/ local people but refused to stop for us to go to the toilet. The journey was so bumpy you could not even read however it was very scenic as we travelled into the highlands. Actually this road is so crazy that one week previously a bus carrying russian tourists plunged over a cliff killing 10 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7943757.stm We eventually arrived in Dalat late in the afternoon feeling a little shell shocked from the bus journey and found 'Peace hotel' which was recommended in ... read more
