Peace, quiet, forests, waterfalls and a happy Lee & Caroline - Dalat 20th - 22nd March 2009 This is my kind of place; cooler climate, endless forests of towering pine trees, the beautiful smell of pine sap in the unsullied air, twisty roads, dirt tracks to explore and minimal effort required to escape the crowds. It’s been so long since I’ve been anywhere similar I’d almost forgotten just how much I love places like this. I was born for the hills; when I used to compete in cross country running and cycling years ago the hills were my forte, they’re where I feel happiest and most relaxed and the type of scenery I appreciate most - more so than any city, beach, flatland or desert - and the subtropical hills surrounding Dalat provided us with the ... read more

The journey over the boarder from Cambodia to Vietnam was certainly an interesting one as I chose to use a relatively obscure boarder crossing- at first it involved me and my backpack precariously perched on the back of a moto for 3 hours riding down some of the bumpiest, dustiest unsealed roads Id seen, then when we finally reached the boarder I was informed that there was no public transport on that side of the boarder. I therefore had to persuade a boarder guard with the aid of a few dollars to take me the last 30km on the back of his own scooter!!! So I did eventually make it to the nearest town where I was able to get a local bus up through the Mekong Delta to Ho Chi Minh City. I was very ... read more

I actually really left Nha Trang! It was sad, but it was time. One of the girls I had met got really sick and ended up in the hospital for a few days, but it sounds like she is doing much better-scary!! The last day in Nha Trang was great...I had Indian food for lunch that was so yummy and was so much food that I thought I would never eat again. But I am me and eating is what I do. The sun came out and I spent some time on the beach and my friends and I decided to go banana boating which was super fun. We fell off more times than what we think is normal, but it was really great. That night we went to dinner at a fabulous French restaurant where ... read more

DALAT: translation: Want to come back. We boarded our minibus for the long climb to Dalat. We climbed mountainous roads (elevation 1500 meters) through pine forests and more greenhouses than we had ever seen. After checking into our 1 ½ star hotel (great value for the money) we walked past the central market and along the shore of a long lake in the center of town. We had the lake to our right and the Dalat International Golf Course to our left. At the end of the lake we discovered the Dalat floral gardens. Amazing how many flowers were already in bloom even though it is only early spring. We took taxis back to the hotel where the committee (Chairman of the board, Meeda Beew, translation: Mr. Bill) decided to go for a cable car ride. ... read more

Hi Everyone: I am taking advantage of the higher speed computer at the hotel I am at in Da Lat and publishing a quick blog entry. Unfortunately I left 2 of my memory cards in Nha Trang, so I can only publish pictures I've taken in the last two weeks. I know I have a ton of flower photos - I just can't help myself. I have no idea what I will do with all the flower shots when I get home, but at the time I see these things (especially considering the long white winters we have at home), I just can't help but take the shot. So I dedicate this page to Oma Mueller, Ann, Irena and all my other family and friends who love flowers. The rest of you will just have to ... read more

Dalat in Vietnam means luxury..... (it doesn't really but it did for us!) Another bus journey from Nha Trang to Dalat and 7 hours later we were on the look out for somewhere to stay. Dreams hotel was Lonely planet's pick (the travel guidebook for those who don't know) .. which usually means the price has doubled or its full. We landed on our feet and took the last room. A TV in the room usually is a little luxury... hot shower... maybe a toilet that flushes is nice... but this guesthouse was... well... FLASH!!! For 20 USD (14 quid) we got cable TV, a massage shower, free use of the net, buffet breakfast (which was huge)... and get this... a roof top jacuzzi, sauna and steam room!!!!!!! Now we should be telling you how beautiful ... read more

Even though we have been travelling for over 4 months now that we are out of Australia wiith no specific intention of return for a couple of years it feels like we are officially and formally on our way. We have planned for a long time to start out with a month or so in Vietnam. The country is one of the last in SE Asia that we have missed out on to date and we have been keen to get here, provided we could fit it in. We have a visa for a month so will be out again before 18 February but, at this stage, have no specific plan about how we will do that. Perhaps that would be better expressed as, no specific - and agreed - plan on how we will get ... read more

We arrived in Dalat late in the evening after a 9 hour bus journey. While the distance between Saigon and Dalat is only several hundred kilometers, single track roads combined with mountains made for a slow journey. On the bright side we did end up chatting to a lovely young Vietnamese lady called Thao who gave us some of her fruit, advised us on where to go in Vietnam (and showed us pictures of the places on her iphone), taught us some basic vietnamese (chiding our accents) and sorted out free transporation to our hostel. Once we arrived at ‘Dreams’ we were met by the delightfull Mrs Dung who showed us to our room resplendent with giant bed, satelite tv and power/massage shower and told us that breakfast was between 6 and 10 am and that ... read more
