Traveling with Mathew is an experience to remember. He doesn't go by any books, but just follows his nose. He will talk to other travelers and use his instincts, and somehow always lands on his feet looking glorious. Where you will end up is like rolling dice. And where we ended up was Koh Lanta. "Koh" means "Island" and that is where we were. A small island with nothing to do. I so far cannot understand how people can go somewhere to do nothing. In Koh Lanta, this was a little sanctuary for people to wake up, eat, drink beer, smoke pot, enjoy the view of the beautiful ocean, lay in their hammock, spend time with the other travelers drinking beer, eating, smoking pot and start all over the next day. Their life goals include staying ... read more

Ko Lanta Kris Ko Lanta is a lot bigger than Ko JUm with lots of pricey resorts and family holidays. This also means it has electricity at night. Bonus. On our journey into port on the ferry we were immediately approached by someone asking if we'd like to stay at her seaside bungalows. We accepted and as soon as we left the boat we were crowded onto a pick-up truck for free transfer to Lanta Sunny House bungalows by Long Beach - so called becuase it's..well...long. And a beach. We installed ourselves in a bamboo hut at one end of the complex of variously priced bungalows. We chose the cheapest. The price seemed to depend on the size of the rooms and what your walls were made out of. Ours being titchy and largely wade of ... read more

Take Care. I finished typing those words and then made my way down to the dock on Ko Phi Phi. "Ko Lanta! Ko Lanta!" beconed me to the right ship and I went aboard. I took a spot on top of the deck to enjoy the nice breeze and what was shaping up to be a beautiful day. Then, once everyone was aboard, we took off towards Ko Lanta......but we didn't get far. Did our boat just stall (the look on my face asked)? Apparently not, but we stayed floating in one spot for almost 15 minutes. Then, a sputtering engine started to bring us back to the docks, but stops just before them. I see a long tail boat pull up next to us....and moments later we are driving away from the dock again. Then ... read more

KRABI: Our first stop on the east coast was Krabi. We decided to make our base in Krabi Town, partly due to the cost but mainly because we arrived late after a terrible boat+bus journey. We left Ko Phangan on the earliest boat to give ourselves the best chance of finding somewhere to stay. What we didn't allow for was the bus from the jetty dropping us off at a temple (not bus station), two pick-up truck transfers, waiting in a cafe for two hours, then waiting on the bus for two hours at a stand still (with the engine running!), before we finally left for Krabi. Turned out we were waiting for passengers on the later boat we decided would be best not to take! Anyway, Krabi Town itself was small and from there we ... read more

uff! the big day arrived the 18th have to leave the Island back to Bangkok with Phil, getting lost at the airport and got a cool accomodation in Chinatown, unbelievable how narrow and packed of stuffs those roads are in that area.. even the taxi drivers got lost a couple of time and we had to guide them with nik noy thai.. Met up with Duncan and his Wife in "Square 1" and had to refrain Phil in doing soo much shopping in Khao San Road!.. Got on the tuk tuk (I mean obviously u can say u've been here if u dont jump on one of them) as long as u confirm at least 15 times that u r not interested in any shops on the way to ur destination they r really good fun ... read more

After an emotional goodbye at Phi Phi Hill Resort, including a hug from a staff member for me as well as a gift of a purse made from coconut (possibly out of the lost property box) we made our way to Ko Lanta, our final stop on Thailand's West coast. Checking into the Pavilion Resort we were pleased to see the place lived up to the brochure we had seen in Phi Phi. Set right on the beach and with a pool, we even managed to do a deal with the hotel which kept us under our 10 quid budget. Ko Lanta has an 80% Muslim population, our hotel was Muslim owned and therefore the owner's religion prevented the serving of alcohol but not the renting out of a patch of the grounds to the Sunset ... read more
