Finally home!! Something about Thailand just feels like coming back home. It's so familiar and natural. The trip here was even super smooth, albeit long and sleep deprived. Leaving Sri Lanka was bittersweet, as leaving anyplace (except India) is. My German Buddhist bodyguard (aka Flo) was a great temporary travel partner. He saw me off the the train station and I made a new friend on the train right away (go me!). My new buddy and I maneuvered our way to the airport in Colombo and slacklined with the machine-gun laden security guard as we waited for our flights. The flights were short and easy. The shuttle bus dropped me right in front of my hostel. Easy peasy! Within 15 minutes of arriving to Ao Nang I had already made plans to share a motorbike to ... read more

Sometimes you are cruising along in life, your theme song playing in the background is Talking Heads Once in a Lifetime and then suddenly things go all Alanis Morisette and everything blows up in your face. There's nothing Ironic, its disgusting, dehumanising, aging and a reminder of how dirty people can play. Its a place where you are stuck in a legal minefield and everything is being taken away from you - most importantly, for me, the attempt to take my freedom. The ability to always have a trip on the horizon and my golden ticket AKA passport in my handbag just in case I happened to be driving past an airport if the whim should take me. Its a place where there are colours you never thought you would see that have no name because ... read more

We are up and at it in Ao Nang and almost ready to leave. We go for a walk on the beach to take in the scenery wonderful warm refreshing air. Paul then goes for a quick run on the beach before we say goodbye to Dave, Tracy and the kids. We are both not really wanting to go but we are off. We take off and change planes in Bangkok and in the hurry get some American food (Mcdonalds) Paul the doofess gets down to the loading area where he realizes he left his passport at Mcdonalds. When he returns there is nothing there so panicking he gets back to loading area and we call security where they start doing a check and the next thing we know a Mcdonalds employee is meeting us with ... read more

Today Weare up and at it catching a speed boat for a day long adventure around. We start off by stopping at bamboo island which is a national park and nothing can be taken off of it. On our way we see chickn island...no it is not an island full of chickens but a limestone formation that looks like a neck and head of a hicken. Actually what is crazy is all the beaches on all the islands so if you want to just hang on a deserted island there are plenty. The island started getting busy with tourists so off we went to our next stop but before we left the island we meet up with a couple from Maple Ontario. Our next stop we checked out viking cave, from there we went to a ... read more

Today we left Phuket and headed to Krabi. Specifcally Ao Nang. A new mode of transportation to get there and that was a ferry. The views were spectacular and arrived just after 1030. It was then a quick drive down the road to the Holiday Inn resort where we met Dave, Tracy and the kids. We checked in and then went for a quick bite to eat and then we took a long boat to Railay Beach for the afternoon. The scenery was breath taking as we saw a bunch of monkeys and the limestone formations were crazy. Came back to the hotel for a swim and then out for a great dinner... read more

Have left the big smoke (literally) of Bangkok.. Sky was grey with pollution all the time. I can see why so many people who live there wear face masks all the time. We flew down to Krabi to begin our island hopping 2 days ago. It's beautiful here! Clear sky's sandy beaches but just soooo hot! Everything is so cheap here. 3 course meal and drinks for less than £10. You feel kind of guilty paying so little, but apparently they make profit from that. 1 hour massages for £3.... Although I don't recommend getting a Thai massage straight after being on the beach unless you want a crowd of Thai women giggling around you. Was persuaded by them walking past to go in for a massage and I explained that I am after being on ... read more

Only a 1.5 hour flight from Singapore and we could immediately feel the relaxed vibe of Thailand :) We were picked up from the airport by the Holiday Inn and that lovely feeling that everything was sorted and we didnt have to do anything fell over us. He took our bags, gave us water, put us in an airconditioned minivan and we were off. The Holiday Inn is one bay away from Ao Nang so slightly off the main strip if you could call the main road in Ao Nang a strip :) The main reason we selected the HI was the availability of kidsuites (kids get their own room bunk bed style) AND a kids pool showing 4 slides in the photos. This was perfect!!! We could sit beside the pool and watch the kids ... read more

We flew Thai Airways from Chaing Mai to Bangkok and on to Krabi, where we got an airport shuttle to bring us to Ao Nang ($4.50). I couldn’t help but notice that our flight looked as though it was headed to Iraq, at least half the passengers dressed as Muslims. Krabi province is predominantly Muslim, and is one of the last safe places to go as you head south closer to the predominantly Muslim country of Mayalsia. There have been several terrorist bombings in recent years south of here in Thailand. I opted for this area over Phuket after hearing that the partying and crowds were a bit more laid back, and the beaches less crowded.Ao Nang is a beach town along the eastern coast of Thailand along the Adaman Sea. Krabi Province is famous for ... read more

After jumping from destination to destination every few days over the past month, I was looking forward to arriving in southern Thailand for some R&R, beachside, wading around lazily, possibly with a cocktail in hand.... Those wishful aspirations were quickly dashed as soon as we arrived, for fellow M had sponsored an open water scuba course for me as a graduation present and when we presented ourselves at the dive shop the night we arrived, I was handed a book with an assignment to read 100+ pages in preparation for my class the following morning. Sigh. The next three days were filled with a schedule of reading/classroom/pool exercises/exams/open water dives. Daunting...but discovering a whole world of life as soon as you submerge underwater and being able to be a part of what's teeming down there, floating ... read more
