From leaving my parents house in NJ at 6:00am Saturday to arriving at the guesthouse in Aonang, it felt like the longest travel journey I've been on. Qatar Airways was lovely as usual. Our first flight was 12 hours to Doha with a quick layover before another 8 to Bangkok. Usually I'd sleep on that flight - I combat jet lag by operating on my destination time as soon as I get on the plane - but I didn't get to sleep this time and I'm paying. Our layover in Bangkok was about 14 hours so I did something I've always glamorized: I left the airport. I found an Airbnb right off the Phaya Thai stop of the airport line, which is about 27 minutes from BKK. Unfortunately, finding the place was harder and even though ... read more

After our tear through Vietnam, we flew back to Thailand to wrap up our trip together. Ton Sai is a tiny car-less beach town in the south of Thailand near Krabi, and was a fine place for some serious 'R and R'. The surrounding scenery was fantastic, what with steep cliffs on both ends of the small beach and jagged karst islands everywhere. Here are a few memories of our relaxing time in Ton Sai: watching rock-climbers show off their stuff; Fraser playing beach volleyball while Nancy enjoyed some yoga classes; getting massages; finding some bioluminescent millipedes; and enjoying some fine Chang and Singha products. A few memories that weren't quite so relaxing: being surprised as hell to see base jumpers throw themselves off a cliff face directly above us; fending off bag-stealing monkeys; and hearing ... read more

Nothing too much to report from yesterday. We went to the beach, stopping on the way for breakfast at the Cafe With No Toilet (careful advance planning needed), but it was quite a cloudy day with some rain. Not a huge problem, just hid under an umbrella (Sam) and had a leg massage (me). We had to content ourselves with spotting sunburn and bad haircuts and watching the turf wars among the rogue beachmat vendors. There was a group of young Americans already on the beach when we got there at 9.30, with a Thai guy who was their guide, playing really loud and annoying music through his Bluetooth speaker. We had our toes redone at hut 15 too, they looked not too confident when we asked for flowers but they were excellent, very thorough and ... read more

Last night the lovely people at Palmview resort were so pleased to announce that they now had red and white wine. Unfortunately it was undrinkable. On a par with that found in Luang Praang last year. Also the tempura vegetables Sam had been looking forward to were a complete disappointmen, being infiltrated inexplicably with chicken nuggets, so we decided eating elsewhere was sensible. Armed with our torches for coming back we went to find a minimarket to stock up on snacks and water and went back to the lovely pizza restaurant. Pizza, 2 nights in a row, my son-in-law Jon would be most impressed! We walked back in the dark along the path through the palms, such a great shortcut, a bit spooky when you hear a scooter coming. Got back to the room and we ... read more

After the short ferry trip from Ko Lanta to Ao Nang we arrived at the Ibis Hotel. It was a lovely looking hotel, built right by the mountains offering wonderful views. The location was great with a short walk to the local beach and lots of boats to other popular beaches. The first night we had to focus on planning the rest of the trip and deciding on a potential end date. Getting the next month planned wasn't easy, but it means we don't have to spend ages each night on TripAdvisor. It ended up getting quite late so obviously I ordered room service. It was disgusting. I threw it in the garbage where it belonged. Everywhere in this bloody country substitutes butter for Mayonnaise, it's like sacrificing sex with Jennifer Lawrence for an angry hand ... read more

Yesterday we had a super relaxing day at the beach in Ao Nang, paid 100b to use the sunbeds at massage hut 15 again, this time confident about the free fruit and mats. I had a back and neck massage, 30 not very relaxing minutes. I didn't think that bum would be involved, surely it would stop above my bikini bottoms? Oh no, tried not to tense up. He had both thumbs in my bum, then tried to disengage my ribs from my backbone. A lot of pressing and pulling. Very ouchy!! And it was a him, which I didn't prefer at all, but too late to say without hurting his feelings! i needed cash from an ATM, mistake, as there is a fee for withdrawals although my bank doesn't charge. 200b for taking 2000b out. ... read more

We've just had 2 blistering days on the beach and no sign of rain. It's been fab but a tad uncomfortable due to absence of sun beds. Or at least ones you can take onto the beach. Yesterday we went to have breakfast at Sitti Cafe, down the road towards the beach. Set combo for 170b, so quite expensive, very nice though with a choice of eggs, good wifi but no toilet! We walked left along the beach more or less to the end, looking for the sunbeds we'd seen piled up the night before. They were set out under the trees right at the back of the beach. There are a line of 15 huts, all massage places with lots of chairs outside, very organised. Sam remembered the last one from last time. There were ... read more

What a terrible night of not much sleep. We are both finding it very hard to get over jet lag, so feeling a bit zombie like today. We got up at 4 and packed the last of our stuff, including the takeaway breakfast we'd asked for last night in the restaurant. Bless them, they kept asking questions to get right exactly what we wanted. We went downstairs and the transport was waiting already at 4.30. Not a very nice guy, yawning loudly. Of course when we'd set off he tried to say 150,000, new road, blah blah (see last blog). We said no, the hotel, said 100,000, but I didn't want us to get kicked out at the side of the road so said we'd pay when we got there. And guess what? We were there ... read more

So we've just left Krabi after spending three nights here. We had a nice time here but had a bit of a dampener put on the trip. I'll first mention a fantastic restaurant we found run by a man from Belgium, it was so good we ate there twice. The steak was delicious, we had jacket potatoes covered in cheese and I even got a very tasty creme brûlée to finish the meal off! We also found a lovely little Bistro on our long day trip that cured my craving for a caramel latte and we had cheese and ham croissants! Apart from spending the whole time eating we rode two hours to the Emerald Pool and also to a hot spring. The hot spring was very much appreciated by my sore bum after the long ... read more

7th Jan: My flight was a quick one, only taking a little over an hour to reach Krabi airport. From the airport I took the shuttle bus to Ao Nang, which stopped off at Krabi Town on the way. The journey took maybe two hours and I was deposited in front of the hostel, Pop-In, where I would be staying. From the outside it looked like a pure party hostel, the music was blasting and there were loads of people drinking in the bar. My kind of hell as I am too old for this kind of shit. Check-in was quick and when I inquired about tours was told that the hostel offer their own as well as all the ones offered by other operators. I was interested in doing their tour for the next day, ... read more
