After our tear through Vietnam, we flew back to Thailand to wrap up our trip together. Ton Sai is a tiny car-less beach town in the south of Thailand near Krabi, and was a fine place for some serious 'R and R'. The surrounding scenery was fantastic, what with steep cliffs on both ends of the small beach and jagged karst islands everywhere.
Here are a few memories of our relaxing time in Ton Sai: watching rock-climbers show off their stuff; Fraser playing beach volleyball while Nancy enjoyed some yoga classes; getting massages; finding some bioluminescent millipedes; and enjoying some fine Chang and Singha products.
A few memories that weren't quite so relaxing: being surprised as hell to see base jumpers throw themselves off a cliff face directly above us; fending off bag-stealing monkeys; and hearing the roar of the ubiquitous long-tailed boat taxis. But these bits were far outweighed by the fantastic beach and unbeatable weather.
When we weren't busy relaxing, we found time to take the 'Seven Island Tour' of the surrounding bays. We stopped at some gorgeous beaches where we did some snorkeling. We also got to check out some islands that resembled the shapes
The dusky langur monkey
Their cuteness is deceiving. of chickens, turtles, and an enormous penis. Dick Island, as he called it, was clearly the guide's favourite island to talk about. The island tour finished up with a beach barbecue, pretty sunset, a fire show by a slightly crazy Thai guy, and then a different kind of fire-show by some friendly bioluminescent plankton. Although it was terrifying for Nancy, both of us managed to jump out of the boat into the ocean blackness before it was lit up for us by the magical plankton.
It was very hard to believe that six months of travelling together came to an end so quickly. After almost a week in Ton Sai we flew back to Bangkok for a couple nights before Fraser flew home to go back to work and Nancy gallivanted on to Bali for a few more weeks.
What a trip it was! Over the course of the six months we were practically mugged by those monkeys in Ton Sai, were evilly ambushed by Jellyfish in Zanzibar, ran from army ants in the Amazon, had fire ants in our pants in Madagascar, were seriously harassed by a sharksucker in the Mozambique Channel, were attacked by a vindictive
macaw in Peru, had dung dropped at us by unwelcoming lemurs near Hellville, and were trash-talked by baboons in the Serengeti. We also were kept up at night by the sound of termites chewing our bedframe in a particularly classy Thai hostel, successfully stepped around irascible scorpions in a park shower, developed a pretty scary rash or two, and had a massive jackfruit fall inches from Nancy's head on a jungle hike. However, the most common annoyance in the 8 countries we visited was, strangely, the human taxi driver. Of course, all these encounters made for great memories and awesome stories.
It was so fantastic to experience such a huge variety of places, people, cultures, and environments. Taking this time to travel was a great decision. It has made us feel excited to return to our Sault Ste Marie home.
Until our next adventure...
