At last, a proper whole night in a proper bed, aided by one of my last zopiclone from Vietnam. Feeling much better after it. I can really recommend this hotel (The Quay Hotel, 57 South Bridge Road, Boat Quay). It in a great location, easy to walk to the river and harbour but with a traditional flavour too. It was super quiet last night, despite being on a busy street with a bus stop taking up half the entrance. Sorry not to be coming back here at the end of Feb rather than our usual choice (already paid for), twice the price and twice the distance from the MRT. Perfect if you don’t need a lot of room. It has a safe and a smartphone to take out with you, which seems to be quite standard ... read more

We departed the hotel for a daybreak flight out of Chiang Mai to the coastal territory of Krabi. We took an Air Asia flight which was somewhere between a Southwest and Spirit. We transferred to a private coach to our hotel, 8icon in Ao Nang, arriving before check-in. We got lunch at a small street restaurant and were able to check-in after eating. After a short nap, we ventured down to the beach to check out the surf. The conditions were cloudy and windy which resulted in rough waters. We walked along the beach enjoying the passing patches of sunlight. On the way back to the hotel we stopped for some Indian food when the heavens opened and we learned why this is called the wet season. After dinner, we stayed in the hotel room while ... read more

Saturday 17 February 2018 A good nights sleep. Weather hot and sunny. After chatting we decided on a beach day today. At 11.00 am we left the room. A stroll up to the coast to see what was happening with the boats, then along to find a place on the beach. All very busy, but we squeezed into a spot in the shade. Turned out to be a good place which kept the sun off us most of the day. I had a passion fruit and ice drink, Pat had a Chang beer. We popped in and out of the water. We had sandwiches and drinks at the beach cafe behind for lunch and eventually left at 2.30 pm and sauntered back. A quiet afternoon and we were hungry, leaving the room about 7 pm, we ... read more

Monday 12 February 2018 Weather hot and hazy. Woke about 9 am. Left the room about 11 am and strolled to the port area to people watch for a while. Then off for some beach time. We went to the end of the Aonang beach to our usual place. Lots of people here, with the beach bars behind and vendors selling drinks and various foods on the beach. We did the usual of cooling off now and again in the water, but after a couple of hours decided to finish. On the way back we both had sandwiches in Cafe 8.98 for our lunch. Back to the room for 2.30 pm and a quiet afternoon. Around 7 pm we strolled out and went people watching. The ladyboys were in the street and Pat wanted a picture, ... read more

Thursday 8 February, 2018. Weather hot and sunny. Slept ok. Our plan today was to visit Krabi by local bus. We left the room about 1045 and dropped off some laundry next door. The bus stop was opposite (or so we thought) and we waited for a little while, a bus came along but the driver told us we had to wait on the other side. So over the road we went and only waited a couple of minutes before our bus came. It turns out the bus goes up to the coast and around, which we didn't know. The bus by the way is basically padded seats in the back of a truck and a roof. The journey seemed to take a while and go all over the place, but eventually we were dropped off ... read more

Friday 2 February 2018 We had awoken earlyish after our recovery nights sleep. A slow start to the day was in order. Pat sorted out our stuff, the UK heavy clothing certainly not required for the time being. We eventually left the room for an explore about 1100. First stop, Starbucks for coffee. Weather sunny and hot. We ambled along, looking at shops and people watching. Up to the coast, stopped for more drinks. Purchased an Aonang hat. Lunch was at an Indian / Thai restaurant looking out to sea. Pat had the Pad Thai and asked for not spicy, I ordered Thai Green curry. Pat's came spicier than she likes, but not strong enough to not eat it. Mine broke through my sore throat and was excellent. Our pace was definitely slow today, but it ... read more

Tuesday 31 January, 2018 We left Cyprus a week ago for the UK and have been helping Pat's Mother - Betty - celebrate her 90th Birthday. Yesterday we drove up to Heathrow and stopped overnight at the Terminal 4 Premier Inn. This morning we were up early and off to Terminal 4 for a Qatar flight to Doha at 0910, then onwards to Bangkok. The Premier Inn is walking distance to the Terminal and very convenient. We had checked in online, so we just had to drop our bags off. All went smoothly. Through security, then a cup of coffee and to our gate. The sniffer dog took great interest in my bag as we boarded, and had his snout well in my bag, but the handler asked if I had currency in there, which I ... read more

The drive from Pai to Chiang Mai was horrible: the road was in the mountains and made Shaun and I feel nauseous! It was by far the worst journey, although it only lasted for 3 hours. We got in Chiang Mai in the afternoon and didn't do much. We tried to get some rest but people in our hostel were loud. We got up at 4am and found that some people were sleeping on the floor in our dormitory and we had to walk over them to get out. We left our hostel in Chiang Mai at 5am to go to the airport, where we took a plane to Bangkok. Once in Bangkok, we had a 5 hours wait until our flight to Phuket. We had decided at first to make our way from Bangkok to ... read more
