hello! Here are our pics from sukhothai ........ We had an amazing time here, the guest house was gorgeous and only a short cycle along the river to the town. We spent many hours cycling around the town trying not to get run over by crazy thai drivers! The main attraction here was the old city which contains loads of temples similar to Ayuthaya but are meant to be more significant in thai history and are more aesthetically pleasing. The grounds of the old city were really beautiful and we hired bikes to explore every nook and cranny! It was so relaxing cycling around taking in the awesome surroundings. We also had a couple of great dinners at the local night markets, eating dinner for two (with pudding) for a grand total of one pound and ... read more

After walking through the town centre and across the bridge we hopped on a bus which took us 14kms away to the site of the Old City of Sukhothai. It's a Unesco listed World Heritage site which is the vast ruins of the original capital city of Thailand and an ancient Kingdom dating back to the 12th Century. The setting is huge, park-like, well maintained and best explored by bicycle. After choosing our rental bikes we set off into the beautiful park and spent the day riding down shaded paths and beside lakes and moats, and stopped to wander through the crumbling temples that we came across. We spent most of the day in the main park but also ventured further afield into the more rural, less restored part of the site. It was great fun ... read more

Currently in Bangkok right now but spent a few days in Phitsanulok, mainly for a day trip to this great little place called Sukothai. Prepare yourself, there are ruins and Buddhas to come... shocker, I know... ;) Bit of background, this site was built and during the 13th century and was the main city for about 150 years. What is left from nearly 100 sites ranged from a few stones on the ground to some fairly spectacular sites. Much of what is visible and what are the premier sites have had some restoration but only to what it would have been at that time. Some of the sites are within what was the city wall, easily navigatable on foot, but there are roughly 70 sites outside the walls in a 5km radius, so I rented a ... read more

David here... We got to Sukhothai very easily, though we did have a 2 hour wait at Ayutthaya bus station, which was in the middle of no where, which we took in our stride. We arrived after a 6 hour bus journey, some of which was disturbed by a baby crying right behind us, which didn't help Suzanne who was still feeling ill. We got to the TR Guesthouse at around 19:00 and got settled into the the room quickly. It is pleasant enough. Clean with a hot water shower and a fan for 250BHT (about £5). As it was already late on we ate in the guesthouse which had a restaurant area and served drinks. The food was unexpectedly good, especially the Masaman curry with chicken. Suzanne was still struggling with her throat so I ... read more

After an amazing breakfast of banana pancakes we headed to the ancient ruins of Sukhothai Historical Park. Our transport was a little slower than expected in an opened back bus/truck with the locals, but when we arrrived in the park we had the choice of many many bicycles and opted for the 'turbo' bikes with 'big girl' Becky instantly assigned a higher saddle! Elin's knees on the other hand were touching her chin!! And so map in hand we once again began our cycle and toured the beautiful ruins set in the scenic park. Well and truly templed and cycled out we headed back on the 'bus' at approx. 5 mph to the guesthouse to shower and wash our very sweaty clothes! For dinner we sampled the 'Dream Cafe' however the bike journey was not as ... read more

After a 6 and a quarter hour coach journey and 10 hours without food we arrived in Sukhothai and headed straight to the local 7-11 for supplies! The guesthouse is the best yet with our own bungalow and free bicycle. The toilet was broken however which wasn't great considering Elin's current condition so we decided to stay around the lobby and ate pad thai in the guesthouse restaurant. ... read more

Saturday, 31st July Caught the bus to Sukhothai. Had to pay to get to old Sukhothai despite being told we wouldn't need to. F**k off TAT. Rip off t*ssers. Sunday, 1st August Old Sukhothai is named thus so because it is old. It also happens to be the site of the National Park where most of its heritage sits. Sukhothai was also the capital at one time but a bit longer ago and when Thailand was still Siam and the Khmers (Cambodia) ruled most of the South. We're quickly discovering this country has more capitals than A. A. Milne. We hired bikes at a reasonable £1.50 a day from our guesthouse (VITOON GUESTHOUSE). We headed towards the National Park where we realised we had become an extra from the 'there is a light that never goes ... read more
