Well, it has been a few days since we last posted an update and we are actually now in Chiang Mai (arrived yesterday afternoon). We took the local bus from Ayatthaya to Sukhothai on Sunday (I think), arriving around dinner time. That left us with a FULL day on Monday to explore the ruins in Sukhothai historical national park. We posted some pictures of the ruins below. We rented bikes for the day to get around as the place was huge and had a nice little tour around. at the first ruin we were accosted by schoolgirls wanting to know our names, ages, where we were from, and if they could take our pictures. The first few times it was cute.... and Andrew felt like a bit of a big shot but it got old really ... read more

The Kingdom of Sukothai lasted from around 1235 to 1438 AD. There are several Wats in Sukothai Historical Park but Wat Mahathat is the largest and most impressive. It covers an area of ten acres and Wat Mahathat translates as 'great relic'. It is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Thailand. It was established in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 14th century. The Wat is built of laterite and surrounded by brick walls and a moat. The vastness of this place is really impressive. ... read more

From monkey town we headed to Sukothai via Phitsanulok. First bit by train - 3rd class again (and 3 hours on a hard seat was about all the buttocks could take) but cheap and such a good way to see things. Passed lots of fires in the brush on the way, told this was 'for the mushrooms'. We jumped on a bus at Phitansoluk and headed for Suko.. Stayed in a gorgeous little bungalow with fan and own toilet/shower in place recommended in Lonely Planet called Ban Thai. Set in garden and whole place including building with shared bathroom digs and a bar/restaurant was run by a lovely Thai family, who were very friendly and full of info. Would defo recommend it! Ate at night market which was bigged up by family and in LP but ... read more

Had pancake each for brekkie which ended up being this huge American stodgey pancake, two of us left the guesthouse feeling like we'd swallowed a dense, sponge brick :p Caught a bus (but not as we know it!- basically a wagon with seats) to historic park where we hired bikes for a bargain (30Bh a day) to look round the temple ruins. Bikes are much more fun than walking even if they were dodgey granny bikes. Temples were well worth a visit. They were set in a beautiful park with lakes and trees surrounding them making for some nice pics. We were very achey after 4hrs of cycling/walking/exploring and both sweating like pigs. Ate in guesthouse and Robby had another curry and I had one too. Sat in cafe till closing.... read more

Got MRT to station near BK bus terminal. Unfortunately got a bit lost at this point and had to flag a taxi to take us rest of the way. Taxi guy was freaky, creepy with long hair and nail and his car smelled of pump, he also ripped us off pah. Anyhoo once at terminal we got tickets to Sukhothai no probs and grabbed some 7-11 grub. Bus was 100% better than those in India as was the journey itself- it had air con, a comfy seat and luggage space :) Took about 7hrs. They have some very odd modes of transport here and to get to our guesthouse in Sukhothai we got in something that I can only describe as the weakest motorbike ever with a trailer containing seats strapped to its front- at least ... read more

Hi there, Tried to publish this earlier but for some reason it didn't post. Fingers Crossed! So spent the last few days in Sukhothai. Quiet a bit more touristy than Mae Sot. It was the original capitol of Thailand and home to a UNESCO World Hertiage site. If go many of the guide books say stay in New Sukhothai rather than old but if you are just doing a quick stop I'd say stay in old. It is more tourist oriented so all the menus and such are in English as well as Thai. There are four or five guest houses and best it is convenient. New Sukothai is just that new and though I spent little time there there was nothing to really capture my attention. All that said here are ssome pictures of the ... read more

I took a bus west to continue my tour of Thailand's capitals. This city was the first- Sukhothai. The name literally means "Dawn of Happiness". Yet more evidence of Vedic influence- "Sukkhi" means "happy" in Hindi and Bengali (and probably most Sanskrit-based languages). The main city of modern Sukhothai ain't much to look at, and the settlement built by the old ruins is just a small row of business which cater to tourists. Quieter than Ayuthaya, and much much more peaceful than the current capital. Lodging was reasonable- only 150 baht for my bed with a window and a fan. I payed the entrance fee (100b) to explore the ruins yesterday. I was the only ferang who didn't take a motorized tour or rent a bike to explore the extensive historical park. Seattle-vallas are tough like ... read more

After waking & leaving late from the Sawadee Guesthouse after breakfast, the last thing we needed was an idle taxi driver to get us through the busy morning traffic of Bangkok - especially as the train we needed to get, only ran once a day. Now accustomed to the crazy driving of the tuk tuk & taxi drivers; weaving in & out of alleyways & driving up the wrong side of the road, we braced ourselves for a speedy journey to the train station. However, not this time, instead, our ‘crazy’ & toothless taxi driver was asleep at the wheel in the middle of a busy cross-junction, with on coming traffic heading towards us. Whether it was the yell to move, or the firm shaking that woke him, he slowly came about & realised where he ... read more
