The Kingdom of Sukothai lasted from around 1235 to 1438 AD. There are several Wats in Sukothai Historical Park but Wat Mahathat is the largest and most impressive. It covers an area of ten acres and Wat Mahathat translates as 'great relic'. It is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Thailand. It was established in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 14th century. The Wat is built of laterite and surrounded by brick walls and a moat. The vastness of this place is really impressive.
