The trip to the North started out really good! Our first stop was to Sukhothai, the original capital in Thailand. We stopped and got these little bananas (about half the size of normal ones, and much more yellow) and they were so good! We also got these banana chips, which were awesome too. We then went to the Sukhothai Historical park, and walked around and saw the ruins of old temples. We did not get much history on the area though, which was unfortunate, but enjoy the pictures!... read more

Another Project comes to a sad end So Thursday was the last day to spend with these amazing creatures and boy did myself and Jane make the most of it. Our first daily walk was the longest we had taken in the two weeks and by the end the heat was beating down through the forest. So washing the Elephants today became more of a shower for both them and us, in fact l do believe l did drench Jane a few times with the hose pipe. Even feeding these guys today was fun as they began to let us feed them bananas into their mouths by getting them to lift their trunks up and placing them on their tongues. So it had become time to say goodbye to the mahouts and to Mr Boon ... read more

Our next stop after Ko Tarutao was another island on the west coast of Thailand, Ko Lanta. Lanta is a well developed island in comparison with Ko Tarutao, and we were looking forward to relaxing on the beach and exploring the island. Our first adventure came when we rented a moped from our guesthouse. Berm did a few test rides along the dusty road and proclaimed it safe, and so I hopped on the back for the trip into town. We did a bit of shopping and organized a day of diving through a local company, and then decided to head back to our guesthouse to find a restaurant along the beach for dinner. On the way back to the guesthouse, we discovered that we were running low on gas, and stopped at a gas station ... read more

Ross: After a short cab ride to Bangkok train station, we waited patiently on the platform for our second class air-conditioned train to Phitsanulok. Pol made use of the toilet but was somewhat perplexed at the number of trans-sexuals sharing the facilities with her. Eventually our train rolled into the station a few minutes late. We had been assigned seats when we booked our tickets and ended up sat near a very chatty girl from Washington DC, which occupied the majority of the first half of the journey. We hadn't realised but the ticket price included a full meal service of some nondescript meat mixture and rice, tea/coffee and savoury nibbles - all very sophisticated. Unfortunately, the over-powerful air-conditioning meant that the journey was decidedly nippy, although Polly's motion sickness didn't make an appearance which was ... read more

The Sukhothai kingdom was an early kingdom in the area around the city of Sukhothai, in north central Thailand. It existed from 1238 till 1438. The old capital, now 12 km outside of New Sukhothai is in ruins and is a historical park and we decided to check them out on our way up north. We stayed in New Sukhothai which is nothing to write home about but the following morning we headed straight for the historical park. Sukhothai (literally means Dawn of Happiness) was the first truly independent Thai Kingdom and was the capital of Thailand for approximately 120 years. The superb temples and monuments of this great city have been lovingly restored and most lie within the perimeter walls around the centre of the old city. Some others are scattered around outside of the ... read more

Die thailändische Form ... read more

To celebrate the King’s birthday and the long weekend I took a bus early Friday morning and went to New Sukhothai. I stayed at a very pleasant guesthouse, named No.4 and was greeted by a hospitable and friendly host, Nung. It was like a home away from home, set in a very peaceful environment away from the main modern centre of New Sukhothai. The next day Anne and I (a lovely German tourist I met that morning who was on holiday visiting her boyfriend) toured Sukhothai Historical Park on a bicycle for the day. Set in a very tranquil and picturesque environment, the Park is surrounded by many ponds and interesting historical architecture of Thailand. For those who are interested, I have included information about Sukhothai and the Park below. Sukhothai meaning “Dawn of Happiness,” was ... read more

25 November. "Heading north". After two hours waiting at the bus station in Vientienne we caught the bus to Nong Khai on the Thailand side. The boarder crossing went swiftly and one or so hour later we had crossed the friendship bridge joining Laos and Thailand and were relaxing at the Mut Mee guest house, a peaceful and very nice guest house on the Mekong riverbank. We had a nice dinner on a riverboat cruise on the Mekong watching the sunset. After the boatride we went back to listen to some live music being played at the floating pub situated just below the guest house. Chris had been sleeping poorly for a few days due to uncomfortable beds but after a few drinks we headed straight to bed and enjoyed a good nights sleep in the ... read more

Ausserhalb hab ich ... read more
