First days in Sukhothai. So different from the traffic and noise of Bangkok and the tourism in Chiang Mai. I have yet to take the bus to the old city ruins and temples (probably in the afternoon, since right now there is the sunny hell going on outside:) Don't get me wrong, I really like it here). There are much less people speaking English, but everyone is really nice and trying to help. I' m gonna rent a motorbike tomorrow for the trip, so wish me luck not to forget that they're riding on the left side. (Might get interesting otherwise.) Oh, and found a laundry as well - things are getting better! (And it's not washed in Ganga river anymore - hello Varanasi:). So keep reading, I'll update soon!... read more

I had to give my muscle a break so I hitchhiked. The very first pick up stopped and gave me a ride until almost Thung Saliam where I checked us in into a nice little hotel. This day was rather uneventful apart from a temple and the pics are from Mo and Alex. And it was not so convenient to sit in the back of a pickup, trying to hold the bicycle with one hand and myself with the other...... read more

The next destination we were heading for was Kanchanaburi but it was too far to travel in one day so we werebreaking the journey staying one night in Ayutthaya. After a very comfortable 6 hour VIP coach from Sukothai we and 5 others were dumped unceremoniously at the side of a very busy road. No promised bus station. We were lucky to get a songheau that we all shared to the centre of what proved to be a very big town. We settled into our guest house which was fine and went for a walk. We were shocked. Although we weren't staying on there it was a place visited by many tourists for the ancient ruins. It was horrible. Run down buildings, dirty, smelly, piles of rubbish everywhere. For the first time we didn't feel safe ... read more

Hello, Sorry all its Kev writing again so you'll have to wait a little longer for another one of Carly's entries! The last few days have been spent in the ancient capital Sukhothai. It's split into the New City and Old City and we stayed at TR Guesthouse in the New City. The Old City is about 10 miles away and is where the UNESCO historical park is located with the ruins of the ancient capital. The New City however is where the better guesthouses are and a wider variety of food options. Our guesthouse turned out to be really good and we could tell not just because the first night we stayed there was a sign in the window stating they were fully booked but also when sitting out on their porch over the next ... read more

Hello.

After reading through the must see places in Thailand we were intrigued by Sukhothai, a city with a Unesco site park that you can cycle around the visit many temple ruins. Despite the rain we set of to the old city - a short bus journey from the new city where we are staying, and rented two bikes for the day - for the grand sum of 30 baht each (less than 70pence). The historical park was very easy to navigate with the map we were provided, and split up into seperate zones that were 100 baht each to enter. We chose to stick to two zones, the main inner city and the northern zone. On our way back from visiting Wat Si Chum, a 13th century temple famous for housing an extremely large buddha statue, ... read more

26 January 2013 Back in Thailand and on the train from Ayutthaya to Sukothai. It is kind of a relief to be back in Thailand, with no travel restrictions and fabulous food. And Thailand is so cheap too!! The train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya cost THB15 each - that's 30 pence. OK, it did take 3 hours, when it was supposed to take half of that, but who is in a hurry? This is our first visit to Northern Thailand. We've been coming to Thailand for years but always end up going south and to the islands. And what a pleasant surprise this has been. Our first stop, Ayutthaya or Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's probably the most relaxed WHS we have ever visited. Most of ... read more

I arrived in Sukhothai by minibus coming from Phi-lo - for only 40 THB. It was an easy 1 hour trip. Unfortunately the bus terminal in Sukhothai is far away from town and I had long discussions with different drivers till I finally found the cheapest option to town - the minibus. The driver agreed to trop me in front of the T.R. guesthouse but was angry with me in the end because I had already booked my room beforehand and he could not get any commision. The T.R. guesthouse is a very nice guesthouse in a peaceful location in the new part of Sukhothai near the bridge. The young couple running the guesthouse was extremely nice and helpful. And as I immediately loved the relaxed atmosphere and my nice room I decided to stay a ... read more
