It might not be the most spectacular spot in the country, but I find it really unique and cool. The village was settled by Chinese peoples who were members of the Kuomintang Party. The village for all intent and purpose is "Chinese" which gives it an uniqueness. Here is a great synopsis of the village's history found on Legal Nomads: To trace back to original inhabitants of Mae Aw (or as the Thais call ... read more

Bright and early start after a big breakfast....I was really anticipating this North Mountain trip thanks to my obsession with seeing Mae Aw (which I will feature in it's own section.) The road was fun-- the infamous Mae Hong Son loop is said to have some sixty hair pin turns per hour. It's legendary in motorcycle circles. I wish I could have done a better job capturing the scenery along the journey, but if I stopped at every photo op, I'd never get anywhere. Our first stop was the Burmese style Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu which overlooks the city of Mae Hong Son. I enjoyed the panorama for a while and then peeked in on a Buddhist mother's ... read more

How stoked was I when I saw my Nok Air prop waiting for me on the Tarmac! After a brief flight I arrived in Mae Hong Son and was immediately captivated. The city is gorgeous. My English speaking guide picked me up at the airport and we drove to Fern Resort so I could throw my bags in a room. It was then time to tackle the first mountain. We drove a washed out, hairpin turn road to a wonderful lookout point and then made our way through the ruts and mud to a White Karon Village. We met up with some locals who had us in for ... read more

Fern Resort bills itself as "Eco-tourism." it is set in a rice paddy and the word "lush" doesn't do justice to the environment. Everything is green and fresh and the sound of running water is everywhere. The streams have those marvelous bamboo chimes in them and the birds, bugs and other animals sing along with the "plonk" of the bamboo. The staff are local Shan folks and they are super friendly. The food was delish. Evidently Brangelina stayed there which gives them a cool point with me..... When we decided to take a trip around the Mae Hong Son loop in Northern Thailand, beginning in Chiang Mai, we weren't originally planning on stopping in the city bearing the province's name. We had heard a bit about Soppong, Mae Saraeong, and of course Pai, but there weren't many people singing the praises on Mae Hong Son. It kind of came down to a decision that, after two-nights in Pai, we were ready to move on. Don't get me wrong, Pai is absolutly beautiful countryside with a really laid back vibe and lots of chilled out places to, well, chill out. With a mean age of 27 years old, however, our group had become a bit weary of the literal hoards of backpackers who move from bar to bar, the shirtless guys with bathing suits ... read more

Jordan and I decided to leave Pai on Sat 23rd, Jed and Hailey came with us and we travelled to Mae Hong Son, from here you can do a loop via another small town and back to Chiang Mai. The bus journey was probably the best bit of the trip. It takes 3(ish) hours over the mountains and us being tight wads braved the local bus as it was half the price of the minibus. When the bus arrived at Pai we immediately regretted our decison as it looked a right mess but as it turned out it was ok for space and as all the windows were down it was quite fresh and not to hot on there! The bus goes up and down the steep mountains so slowly you think it might just konk ... read more

Our last full day in Thailand included a long and (extremely) winded drive from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai. On the way we stopped at the Tham Lod caves - definitely one of the highlights of this leg of our trip. In addition to the very cool stalactite/stalagmite formations, one of the most unique elements of this cave was the stream that ran through it which we traversed in a bamboo raft. We spent the evening walking around the night market in Chiang Mai, ready to fly out to our next destination Singapaore tomorrow.... read more
