Okay, the first part of this story is actually going to be informative for other travelers. Conrad and I have now totally figured out the tricks and tips of getting around Bangkok……cheap. It was of course trial and error, as no one seems to be able to tell you which bus which train etc……it’s all guess work. Here it is though. Use the Skytrain. This will get you anywhere, or closer then you are. The skytrain connects to the underground subway, as well as the northern and southern bus terminals. If you are going to make multiple stops, buy an all day pass for 100 baht (about $3). This allows you to get on and off and all over Bangkok all day long. If you are heading to any of the touristy places like the croc ... read more

We flew into Bangkok this morning! We spent most of the day at the tailor having suits made! This is a very big and crazy city! I think the popullation is about 7 million. We don't even know where to begin! We are staying in a very touristy area so we hope we will be able to find our way around! We took a rive taxi today because there is so much traffic! Anyway, we are just here for the weekend and then we fly home! ... read more

Wow, I'm in Thailand! How did that happen?! First impressions of Bangkok are mainly just the heat, humidity and the piles of traffic... loads of it.. everywhere! I'm excited enough not to care that I've been on a plane for 30 hours with only vaccuum packed salad and the lonely planet guide to Thailand for comfort and am looking forward to doing a bit of exploring. 1.8.05 A few days in Bangkok were enough really, it has a lot of character but is a bit too hectic (and quite frankly too smelly) to stay for long when you're first away and are looking for a bit of r&r. We're heading down to Ko Samet, a little island in the Gulf of Thailand to do some chilling out and lazing on the beach. Can't wait! 2.8.05 Ko ... read more

I know it's only a few days since the last blog posting, but we got some good pictures that I thought I would share. We went to Dream World on Saturday and Max had a great time. It was his first amusement park experience. It was not really like Disney World - I would say it was more like a lower end Asian version of Great America, but it still had a lot of stuff for Max to do. One thing you have to get used to here is that the safety standards are definitely not those of the U.S. For example, there were a number of rides for small children to get on by themselves that did not have seat belts and I just couldn't bring myself to let Max go on those, although there ... read more

Yesterday I had a brief walking tour of Bangkok that was helpful in getting to know the city better and gave me a small inkling of the wonderful shopping possibilities this city has to offer, which is enhanced by talking to people who have already lived here for at least six months. For example, we went into a shopping mall called "Sogo" with the most non-descript looking shoe store that you most likely wouldn't just walk into. It turns out that this shop will remake any pair of shoes you may have identically with high quality leather in whatever color you want. It's not dirt cheap ($40-$50), but if you have any really nice pairs of shoes, it is worth it to have another pair made there. There is also a fabulous outdoor market on Soi ... read more

This is the second in a line of transfer days as I am leaving Tashkent and flying back to Bangkok on my route to Dili. Mind you I have no knowledge if I will go there directly or spend some time in Indonesia along the way. First things first, I leave the hotel and successfully flag down my first Lada 1500 and at the obligatory question (Skolka? -How much?) arrange for transfer to the airport for 2000 CYM. I am dropped off in the main street just outside the airport parking space and a number of optimistic drivers try to get my attention, not really knowing where they are hoping to take me as I am entering the terminal building. Check in has just opened and as hand over my ticket to the clerk another staffer ... read more

We went with a tour group consisting of 22 people in total. And everywhere we went, we were joined by hundreds of other tourists at every single place. Business locals heckled us everywhere. Shopping was an exhausting chore because we were constantly being told what to buy and at what price to buy. Motorbike-taxi drivers would get in our faces and ask us where we'd like to go and saying 'no' twice is not enough to turn them down. I sat with a Dutch guy at a breakfast buffet by accident one morning and what would be an awkward time turned into a heated discussion about how much we hated going out into the streets. Though Bangkok is internationally known as a beautiful city, I'm going to beg to differ. It might have been 20 or ... read more

Hey all: One thing I forgot to mention in my last entry is that Jim saw Ice T a few blocks from our building when Jim was (what else) rummaging through bookstores. For those of you who may not know (like our parents), Ice T is a famous rapper and also acts in a lot of tv and movies. In fact, Ice T came to speak at Harvard Law School while I was there on First Amendment issues. Ice T was in Bangkok to judge a rapping contest. Unfortunately, Jim did not have a camera with him so I can't post any pictures of Ice T on our blog, but Jim said he was with an entourage of people, including his beautiful blond wife. It's funny, because in DC we never saw anyone other than annoying ... read more

Bonjour. ... read more
