Back in Bangkok again, sitting in a bar on Khao San Road with a gin and tonic... ahh. (free internet too! bonus!) I left gorgeous Ko Pha Ngan yesterday along with my gorgeous bungalow and gorgeous girl... (for more info, please enquire within ;) Today i Bang-ed around the dreaded Kok again on various errands - including getting my docs back! Which I DID!! Woohoo! I managed to change my flight again as well, so now I don't leave until the 22nd of August which means I'm GOING TO LAOS! It's well exciting, and I'm going with a couple of friends from Pha Ngan as well which will be good. I've heard Laos is Beeeautiful and extremely cheap (which is a releif, seeing as my hotel bill for the last week came to 7000 Baht!!! -about ... read more

Here are some photos of the pool on our building roof. It's nice and tranquil up there. At the start of next term (end of August), Max will most likely be starting the Early Years program instead of the nursery program. The early years program is akin to preschool in the US. It's a tough call because their cutoff is usually turning 3 by August 31st to start preschool , but the cutoff in Virginia is turning 3 by September 30th and if we end up staying in Bangkok for 3 years, the Embassy will only pay his school tuition (for the final year) and hefty registration fee if he starts kindergarten during our third year here. If he stays in the nursery for the first year and then the early years for the rest of ... read more

Whew, first days. Pretty much uneventful getting here. Funny thing, when we were in Tokyo, Conrad went to get a water. Bought a water in a cute little jar, turns out it was 70 proof saki. Funny. He did not drink it, although he thought it was good. Hotel was good, ummmm. First day out we were sort of half way awake. We had arrived at the hotel after midnight, after 27 of air travel, and not quite with the program. As we were driving to the airport, oh and yes, I did the walk through all the shouting taxi and good deal people in the arrival area of the airport. I was so lucky on the flight to Bangkok from Tokyo, I was sitting with a girl from Nan province in Thailand. She was awesome ... read more

I am happy to check out of the Pradiphat hotel and transfer to the Comfort Suites Airport hotel; it may be a small step for one man, but it is a giant step towards my encounter with the Aral Sea. Even though I have a printed map with directions of how to find the hotel, the taxi driver has a really hard time finding it. We end up driving all the way to the airport and then turn back towards town again until finding the correct exit. The weather continues to be mildly boring, and it starts raining as we finally get there. Although I am at first disappointed to get a room that is not facing the airport I discover that instead I get the views of the departing airliners climbing into the sky, which ... read more

just flew into bangkok, finally. 21 hours on a plane (give or take an hour) someone once said getting there is half the fun... i'd like to meet that man. althogh we had a rather interestring stopover in tokyo. i was rather thirsty so i decided to grab a traditional japanese jar of water, or so i thought, it turns out it was 70% saki. so i did what any self respecting teen would do and challenged my mom to a drinking contest to which she promptly chickened out from, which makes me winner by default i suppose. when we arrived in bangkok we cvaught a cab to our hotel. which was, of course, in thai gang territory and home to countless stray animals, not to mention hookers, and bike gangs. when we woke up we ... read more

Having spent three nights at the Karnmanee I have not really been making much use of my time in Bangkok. I had planned to see my friend Kay but ended up spending more time on my own than anticipated. I like to hang around the shops and eateries at Pradiphat Road, a street which has most of the things you could need, and is blissfully devoid of tourist mobs and hawkers. In the evenings a myriad of food stalls come out and it is nice to walk around to pick up spicy snacks and fresh fruit. The Skytrain is another piece of engineering that I really appreciate. It offers easy access to areas otherwise locked up in what can sometimes be maddening traffic jams. Watching the traffic though, is a pastime that rarely gets old to ... read more

Well, I had hoped to post pictures this week, but our digital camera's battery died so I need to buy a new lithium battery this weekend. We will get some pictures up soon! It is amazing to me how fast we are settling in. We still barely know the city, but in the matter of a few days, suddenly everything seems easier and is falling into place. We visited Max's school the other day and they had room for him in the Summer session so he is starting that on Monday, which will make it a lot easier for me to get things done so we can get what we need to set up our home and learn more about the city as well as provide him with some additional stimulation. Max's school is very nice ... read more

Well, the horrible flight finally came to an end and I was jumping out of the plane like a man pardoned from a long prison sentence. I immediately set course for the various information booths to try to pick up a Bangkok Airport time table, which proved a fruitless attempt. All counters showed me their copy and sent me in the direction of the bookshop on the 2nd floor, which naturally had never heard of the item in question. I decide to be a bit proactive, skip about the timetable and head directly to the Thai office to make a reservation for Denpasar on August 4. I imagine a line of 500 people in front of me, but there is no one waiting, so this will be a smooth affair. I ask for a ticket to ... read more
