I was quite fortunate to meet Michael from Germany in the bus line up from Bankok airport. Sometimes arriving in a new city can be a confusing start, so it was a relief to traipse the areas near KoSan Road looking for accomodation with somebody elses' input as well. The last thing I expected was to share a room with him, but when a twin works out cheaper than a single-why not? We started the next day jumping on board a ferry up the Chao Phraya River towards ChinaTown. Walking into the maze of market traders was a loud and smelly experience that for some strange reason is a feature within Bankok. Why do we love it so? It's certainly not home and that's a big plus, but I suppose it's just a shopping haven. Yes, ... read more

Last Friday we flew from Phuket to Bangkok, the last stop on our round the world voyage. We braved Air Asia (one of Asia's budget airlines) once again - it was fine apart from the unallocated seating, so it felt like getting on a bus as people scrambled for the best seats... We had a busy old time in Bangkok visiting temples and night markets. The city is home to lots and lots of Buddhist temples, the best of which are near the river and within easy walking distance of each other. First up was Wat Pho - famous for it's enormous reclining Buddha (or lazy Buddha as one Thai tour guide put it). Wat Pho was pretty spectacular - the temple buildings ornate with jewels and intricate murals, and the most fantastic statues guarding the ... read more

I have had enough. I couldn't take it any longer..the noise, the heat, and the stink of Khao San. Of the 3 nights I stayed there I only slept a handful of winks. People were constantly banging around, slamming doors, cursing loudly in the concrete hallways at 4 am. I was tired of the whole environment. My room was stuffy with bad lighting and I was getting fed up with the way people seemed to consciously ignore one another in the lounges and bathrooms. So, I woke up early, re-packed my bag and walked about half a mile out of the whole area. Things weren't looking too promising on the road I was on until I got to a faded old sign saying 'Villa Guesthouse' leading to a long alleyway. I walked up to the door ... read more

Wats are absolutely gorgeous. They, along with many things in Thailand, are very ornate. The chedi and pillars can be really breathtaking, like those at Wat Arun. The colours can be magnificent, including gold, such as at Wat Phra, at the Golden Palace. And, as always, the Buddha statues are fascinating too. I will, like with many of the great things I've been to, just let the photos speak for themselves. And just so you know, other great Wat photos can be found in other posts - including the ones: Grand Palace Wat Po etc with Dan What's a wat Chinatown... read more

As if packing up and leaving was not depressing enough the ordeal sees the wake up call coming at 4 am and by five I am outside picking up my last Bluebird Taxi for a drive to the Soekarno-Hatta airport. I still have around two million rupiah left to spend, of which 85.000 goes to the taxi and another 100.000 for the departure tax. There's not much action going on at this hour, the near empty concourse slowly comes to life, mainly with business travellers and some tourists. I am surprised to learn that the Garuda service to Bangkok is nowhere near full capacity. I had guessed for a huge widebody, not a 737. Another suprise is that the flight is not even non-stop, making a stop in Changi on the way. Perhaps it should not ... read more

Before leaving Bangkok and Thailand altogether, here is a few other places I've been over the last few days that I haven't posted with the Wats, Chinatown, Grand Palace, etc. The Swing I've lost my notes on this place! And it's not in my Lonely Planet - I'd found it somewhere else. So I'll check later and edit this, but it'll be long after you've read it sorry. Anyway, the swing is lovely. As you may be able to see if you look closely, its also home to some lovely birds at its base. The Swing is opposite Wat Suthat, which I already put photos of in the posting on many Wats in Bangkok - its the one that has those Buddha stutues, that are actually memorials to the deceased. Wat Suthat also proudly states that ... read more

What is a Wat? And more... like Buddha image info. “Mikki, you'll find the Buddha stuff interesting.” I've been talking about them all the time, since I went to the first one connected to the Grand Palace, but particularly in the huge posting of some of the great photos I had from all different wats. A wat, then, is a temple monastery. They are open to the public to come in and pray, in general, and at certain hours. The parts of a wat include: * The wihaan - where the large buddha figure will be, where people come and offer money. I read that there are 3 elements to it, meaning Buddha (the teacher), Dharma (the teaching) and Brotherhood (the followers). * A or some chedi/ stupa - which is the large bell-looking structure ... read more

Am ... read more

Last weekend we finally got to see the river! We took a boat from the dock (walking distance from a Sky Train stop) to the Mandarin Oriental hotel. The hotel is very beautiful and it was very cool to take a boat to it and see all the long boats and water taxis on the way. The river is definitely a great way to view Bangkok and I am also told that it is the best way to see the Grand Palace, which we have not done yet but hope to do soon. I have attached a picture of the Oriental Hotel lobby. Afternoon tea there is supposed to be fantastic and so is the Oriental spa, which has its own boat dock, separate even from the hotel. Afterwards, we took another boat towards the Sheraton ... read more
