Mariage hindou. La salle louée pour ... read more

Elle er ... read more

Winter isn't Shanghai's finest season. The air quality deteriorates, the days are short and cold, and everything seems gray and colorless. From a western perspective at least, January is always a bit of a let down. Once the festive Christmas holidays pass and the excitement of the New Year subsides, the leftovers feel pretty drab (though in China everyone is still looking forward to Spring Festival and time with family). Luckily enough, we managed an extended escape…our first time to the glorious cacophony of color that is South Asia. It was also nice to get away from the big city. The first thing I noticed about Sri Lanka as we approached was how dark it was. Even as we descended towards Colombo there were very few lights until we were practically on top of the capital. ... read more

Today we drove to Dambulla Caves which date back to 1st BC. The amazing complex of 5 caves was used by a King who upon regaining the throne commissioned magnificent carved images within the living rock. Fran sat this one out as Keith climbed for about an hour and covered about 250 steps and sloping rock to reach the caves. It was an awesome sight to see these caves and its status of Lord Buddha plus his followers. Fantastic view from the top and worth the walk. We then continued to Kandy which is the second largest city in Sri Lanka. On route we stopped at the Matale Spice Gardens. At the entrance Keith spotted a 1950 Morris Minor Lowlight Saloon car parked under a palm tree garage. Fran has never seen me move so fast ... read more

So as it was presidential election day decided to take a tuktuk.... Everyone going home to vote, buses crazy packed! 1 1/2 hr tuktuk ride driving in luxury... Nice breeze... Plenty of room! Thought it would be remote but soon winding our way up through the mountains! Bumping along reached the 'junction', not sure in this case what it implies.... Shop, bus stop... Road continuing. Anyway onto a track up the hill side... Really bumpy track now, although happy he insisted on continuing up.... Pretty far.... Up an up! Reached the gate and had a samosa snack in preparation for the lack of food... Also stocked up on biscuits and Bombay mix just in case! Strangely anxious going into a tranquil place... Big silence sign... Office this way. Sat down, signed in and was shown to ... read more

A bit of a lazy morning, and cases packed we set off for mission 555, we take the metro into the shopping centre and head for "at the top" which is on the lower ground? we have fast track tickets and are put into a side room for drinks and dates, and by pure chance they are celebrating its 5th birthday so are given a presentation box with a commemorative silver coin in it. We go through all necessary safety checks and are then taken to the lift. The lift is fast and you are at the top, floor 148, in 60 seconds , we were greeted with Armarni sweets and juice and were able to walk around at leisure, the views were amazing and could see for miles. We then went down to floor 125 ... read more

Well, it time to catch up,life is going so fast! Day 4 in Dubai and we were on a mission, We went to The Palm but couldn't fully appreciate the design of it you really needed to be up high. We took the Monorail that runs down it centre and saw the streets and houses where you could drive up and park your car by the front door and your back garden was the beach. We then went back to the shopping centre to get tickets for " at the top" the only ones available were for tomorrow, meaning yet another trip to the centre! We found our way to the underground and travelled on that albeit to the wrong station, we had quite a walk, but thanks to the tall buildings were able to navigate ... read more

The train to Kandy was pretty painless and more or less on time. We didn't actually go all the way there hoping off instead at nearby Peradeniya. We had arranged a couch surfing host somewhere in the middle of nowhere and Benjamin had arranged for a tuk tuk driver to meet us there and deliver us to our did for the night. The tuk tuk had a puncture and we had to walk the last hundred yards or so. Benjamin lives in a beautiful location deep in the hills a few miles outside of Kandy. He was working when we arrived so we were met by his mother who treated us to a delicious chicken curry lunch. After a rest (travelling is so tiring!) the tuk tuk reappeared and took us into town just in time ... read more

So bought a train ticket to Kandy for Monday.... 1st class, 3hr journey.... 500 rupees.... Roughly 2 pounds! Turned out to be air con and everything! Although after a couple of hours was actually too cold... Amazing views after a few hours of going up... All the doors imbetween the carriages open... People hanging out all the way along the train! Get the feeling the trains should be the preferred method of transport from now.... maybe no more 1st class though.... Bang on 3 hours arrived in Kandy. Put on my backpack for the first time and walked out past the waiting tuktuks.... Well walked about 50m and found another guy with a tuk tuk... No tourist prices please. Went up onto the hill to the south side of the lake... No hostel booked but gave ... read more
