22nd Feb – Mahiyangana Waterfall and Sorabora Lake Today we went to Sorabora Lake (05:00 start) and went to a boat where a man rowed us out to the lake after a while I had a go paddling, 5-minutes later I swapped with Sophie. Dad rowed for 10 more minutes until we came to some shallow water where me, Sophie and dad jumped in and it was surprisingly warm. When we got out we went fishing where dad caught 5 fish, Sophie 2 and mum and Jonathan 0 fish. After, we threw them back in to the lake because they were too small to eat. After we went through a jungle walk and followed a river to the biggest waterfall I have ever seen. We were going to swim in the waterfall. It was too much ... read more

21st Feb - High Knuckles Mountain Range and Tea Plantations Today we got up early for a one day walk in the mountains. The place where we were walking is called Knuckles. We had to go in the van up a ginormous hill. It was full of pot holes and very bumpy. We kept climbing up all the time and we saw lots of school children. We walked past thousands of tea bushes. After we walked through all the tea we kept going up and up. When we got to a river it was a relief because we drank a lot. Half way was 1570m above sea level. Some of the time was disgusting because there are these worms called leeches, they suck your blood and they are really quick, and easily get up your leg. ... read more

17th Feb - Today, I looked under my pillow to find 300 Rupees same as 1 pound 50. After I had looked under my pillow we had to go and look at some beautiful birds (time: 06:00). On that walk I saw some amazing birds like parrots and even found a porcupine needle. There was a big problem, there were hundreds of leeches and all the family got bitten except for me (I'm so lucky). Then we went to the Botanical Gardens in Kandy where there was a great combination of plants. In the evening we went to the Buddhist Temple of the Sacred Tooth. We visited at Pooja when people were offering flowers and then praying. After, we waited in a queue to see the case containing the Buddha's tooth from when he was burnt. ... read more

16th Feb - I am writing this at our lodge as 50+ monkeys pass through the garden. It was another start to an amazing day.Today we went to the town, it was so busy. We went into the local market. It was where all the local people went to buy their food. Everything was so fresh; fruit, meat, spices, vegetables. Traders wanted us to try and buy. We bought some mangoes, one only cost 20p. In the evening we went to a traditional dance show. I really like the masks and the fire walking finale. Sophie Today I went to the market in a stuffy bus. When we got there, there was lots of fruit, veg, spices, and lots of disgusting meat like cow guts. After we went to a lake where I saw a monitor ... read more

It was sad leaving school and I will miss all my friends. 15th Feb - It was so hot on the plane, one man fainted and another needed oxygen! A man called Kapila picked us up at the airport and drove us from Colombo to Kandy. We saw rubber trees, rice paddy filelds, pineapples, cashew nuts and bananas. They were much smaller than the ones you can buy in the supermarket. We rode on an elephant, which was amazing but also a bit scary too. It was even hotter in Sri Lanka, my t-shirt was sticking to me - phew! The elephant sprayed me with river water and that helped me to keep cool. When I tried to go to sleep at night the gecko lizards running about on the roof kept me awake. Sophie... read more

After a 2 hour flight delay we arrived in Sri Lanka at 1:30am. Thankfully the driver we had arranged was waiting for us, and quickly whisked us off to our guesthouse in Negombo. The town itself isn’t that great, but it’s close to the airport and suited our needs. We hopped in a tuk tuk the next day to find a sim card for our phone. The driver was really sweet, although communication was an issue. If we asked him a question he didn’t understand (or know the answer to), he would simply wobble his head. Quite endearing. We popped out for dinner to a local restaurant and saw curry and fried rice on the menu so opted for that. Oh my god! The world’s biggest portion of rice appeared on one of those catering trays ... read more

Tea, is served. And neither is it some sissy rose petal jasmine tinted version with a twist of ginger. The air of the mountains hangs heavy with the scent of your basic black hard core traditional Ceylon brew. Not that I'm any type of connoisseur but if the choice at breakfast is tea or coffee, the little black leaf gets the nod. Sri Lanka's Hill Country is tea central of the galaxy and travelling to and through the region is half the fun, where the journey itself becomes an essential ingredient of the travel recipe. Sure you could jump the bus but "the little red engine that huffed and puffed" is THE way to slip by the area. Leaving Colombo, urban sprawl quickly turns to rice paddies, then banana plantations before finally climbing up and settling amongst ... read more
