Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375As we were sketching out our trip through Asia, we had picked out a number of festivals that we wanted to check out and one that had always been a curiosity for me were the extravagant, usually Hindu, elephant festivals. There are a number of these held in India and other parts of Asia where elephants are an integral part of ceremonies and processions so it seemed like it would be a slam-dunk to find one as we traveled the area. However, two elephant sized red flags popped up as we were looking at the options that might be available to us. First there was the caution that these festivals, particularly in India, are horrendously crowded, and when they give you a crowd caution in India you best take heed- I'm fairly certain that ... read more

On our way to Kandy we passed through Matale and visited the Hindu temple – Sri Muthumariamman Thevasthanam. There is always someone on hand to show you around the temple (for a price of course) and this temple was very ornate and well supported by locals. Hidden away are five enormous and colorful ceremonial chariots which are pulled along by people during an annual festival. Shoes off – and this time an entrepreneural young man noted our western Tiva sandles and took them to safety in a cardboard box only to be disappointed when we took them back without payment – but many thanks as we thought they had been stolen….. We arrived in Kandy (still raining) with plenty of time to spend at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and attend the nightly cultural ... read more

The early start and lengthy train ride behind us, we arrived in Kandy at lunchtime and headed to our accomodation via a helpful Tuk Tuk driver called Raja. The accomodation was nice and peaceful, if a little way from the centre. We dropped our bags off and arranged for the same driver to take us to the cricket ground - a lengthy 45minute tuk tuk ride away. Arriving at the Kandy cricket ground we had no idea what to expect after the gulf between the two grounds we'd seen before. We’d only been able to secure grass bank tickets for the match so were delighted when searching for the toilets outside the media centre to be handed free tickets for the grand stand. We appeared to get into the corporate area too, which had TVs set ... read more

Sri Lanka; Our last minute adventure! We chose to travel to Sri Lanka without knowing much about the country at all...we thought it would be fun to explore a different part of Asia and to discover a whole new culture. Despite having no real expectations of Sri Lanka we were still surprised when we arrived! We spent a few days on the outskirts of the capital city, Colombo in a place called Dehiwala. We soon discovered that we were pretty much the only white people in the whole suburb and its surroundings! We were stared at constantly and due to the lack of tourism it was often hard to get around...! At one point we attempted to get a local bus into the city centre, but soon had to give up! The destinations of the buses ... read more

Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375I had a taste of what the Perahera would be like from the Poson festival in Beliatta, Trinco Perahera and from seeing the Kandy dancers however, I definitely wasn't expecting there to be around 200 elephants, and thousands of dancers it truly was a memorable night.I arrived in the afternoon by (four) buses from Tangalle and made my way to the YMCA, I had arranged my accommodation beforehand as everything gets booked up for this ten day event really early. I can't believe leaving the bus station and the streets are all full, on the perahera route you can't even see the pavements anymore as they are filled with people sitting waiting on the event to start in the evening, there are few spaces to be had. So it was a quick check in, ... read more

After our last trip to Vietnam. We travelled Air Asia again for our trip to Sri Lanka. I have to admit that at first we were a little nervous flying to a country that has been under the radar compared to many other destinations. Day 1 - Colombo City - Galle Face Green, Crescat, Shalimar Hotel We arrived at the Bandaranaike Internaional Airport on Sunday July 1st. After thoroughly reading the travel books about arrival, as soon as we got there we headed off to the bank counters to exchange our dollars into a local rupees. Our exchange rate at the Bank was 1dollars =131. 76 rupees. After getting our local currency we didn't really know what to do next we stood there reading our travel book or as I call it our bible where it ... read more

Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375I got a local bus from Colombo direct to Kandy and met up with Reza who's staying in the YMBA (Young Men's Buddhist Assoc.), I just ask on arrival and I'm pointed in the right direction. We manage a cheap deal on a room although we have to convince the staff we're not ‘a couple' as we are ‘not married' before they let us share a room… it's just cheaper. We head up to watch sunset at the viewpoint above the YMBA, going past the YMMA (Muslim) next door to the top of the hill, the view looks over the whole town and takes in the lake, the Temple of the Tooth, the Buddha on the opposite hill and much, much more, it really is a beautiful place. We meet a young American girl ... read more

The ladies left prior to our waking. Today was the day I had been preparing for, one of the main reasons I came to Sri Lanka, besides a spiritual retreat. Today was elephant fun day! I had my eyes set on the Millenium Elephant Foundation, a non profit housing elephants for educational and recreational purposes. A bigger sanctuary/national park was available, but I had read that it was less hands on. We walked toward downtown and met a tuk tuk driver on the way. We negotiated and hired him for the day for about 10 dollars. He was veryfriendly, as are most Sri Lankans. Our first stop was the FounDation. For 30 dollars, we were able to bathe, get showered by, and ride an elephant. Of course, we had to share the same elephant, which was ... read more

4/21 It has been a few days since I have been able to write. They have been filled with much adventure and good times. I haven't had a chance to sit down alone and meditate on my thoughts. After waking the next morning post casino romp, David and I had breakfast at the hostel and packed our things. I was going to attempt to purchase a train ticket to Kandy, something they had done a day earlier. I had hoped there was one left for me. We met Mariom in the lobby. She was accompanied by her friend from France, Audrey, a pretty brunette with a stern look. She had been on a flight from France to Doha to Colombo. Much like my own experiences with lack of sleep prior to my arrival, she had a ... read more

Well here we are again, finally. After a few cold months at home then a few lovely warm months lounging around Thailand our travels have kicked off again, and it’s somewhere we have both been looking forward to immensely, Sri Lanka. A lot of friends, including two very good ones, constantly wax lyrical about the joys and splendour of this country so we couldn’t wait to see for ourselves. A stupidly early flight from Bangkok taught us one thing new about the city, it is possible to avoid the traffic jams, you just have to drive around at 4am. We landed at Colombo airport mid-morning and after thinking, briefly, about the kind offers of taxis for the 40km journey into the city, “very, very cheap Sir, we’ll even stop at a bank so you can take ... read more
