During our stay in Colombo we decided to take a trip to Kandy which is the second largest city in Sri Lanka. Actually we had already planned to travel to Kandy, and when we arrived in Colombo the capital of Sri Lanka, Lily our Sri Lankan friend advised us to reserve the train tickets at least a day in advance. Somehow or other, mainly due to our hectic schedule we failed to book the tickets and went to the Fort railway station early in the morning to catch the morning train. Much to our dismay, we found a long line in front of the ticket office. Actually the line extended to the street outside! Anyway, we decided to wait it out and try our luck. The line moved inch by inch, and when we finally got ... read more

Geo: 7.39317, 80.72390630hrs: "Flaps back" and I am greeted by sunshine! At last the weather gods are smiling and a view stretching at least 30 miles across the huge valley to the ranges opposite is visible. In the far far distance I can once again see the large lake shimmering in the early morning light. The shades of green are ever changing as the clouds and mist slowly rise from the valley below and gently drift skywards drawn by the ever strengthening suns rays. The night noises have now been replaced by cheerful callings of crickets, birds and the odd cockerel strutting it's stuff in the village far below us. To our right, is a small waterfall in full flood after the recent heavy rains and in the distance, I make out the tiny white shapes of ... read more

Geo: 7.39317, 80.7239CATCH UP: We are now based for 3 nights is a tented eco lodge set high and remote in The Knuckle Ranges amongst a tea planation some 30km from the Colonial Hill Station of Kandy.By tented, I mean the fabric of the room is in "theory" canvass but in practice, it is a luxury villa with full facilities and open balcony. An adventurous 2 minutes walk from The Central Lodge finds a superb "white hatted" chef, team of friendly flunkies offering silver service and a colonial "Raj" atmosphere.CLIENTELE UPDATE: Average age 26 - French/Euro. Female: Blond and poker faced. Male: Bearded, new man, submissive and sandal wearing. They are however Euro chic well healed and savvy. We are sadly the old fogies by comparison. However, these are not the partying type but are content ... read more

I think the past week has been one of my best weeks in Sri Lanka so far! Last week at one of my projects a woman came up to me and said "titanic titanic titanic" while pointing at my phone. I played her the song 'my heart will go on' and she wanted to dance to it. We ballroom danced all around the ward and I was getting really into and doing big hand gestures while singing my heart will go on and she was copying me. When the song finished she then requested 'shalala lala' by the Venga Boys. I'm not sure where she learnt these songs!? For the rest of the two hour session we danced to these 2 songs repeatedly and I was SO hot and sweaty, it was probably the best workout ... read more

I had my fantastic second night of Sri Lanka at Amaya hills, Kandy. Before we went to the hotel, we visit one more temple. The temple was bigger than the one that I visited in the morning. The second temple that I visited was really enormous and magnificent. There were a lot more people and buildings in there. Especially, some sort of speeches of some Sri Lanka people was announced continuously. It made me to be silent and it was sort of weird. Our hotel was located on Amaya hills, literally on the top of the hill. We had to ride a bus on our way there, but the road was really really narrow;; Only one car cold pass through. But our professional driver drove away through those narrow passages at least 60km/h. WOW~ When we ... read more

After the temple in the Dambulla, we again went to Kandy. On our way there, we visited very fascinating tourist site. We visited the Spice Garden. At the garden I see lots of different kinds of plants that were being used normally by people in Sri Lanka. Many plants in the garden were used for foods, medicines or cosmetic products. Among the plants that were used for foods, I could see Coco beans, mini-pineapples and vanilla. They were really attractive. However, the real most attractive one was the plants related to cosmetics. Not only I but also other friends and teachers were totally allured by cosmetics produced by natural plants. After viewing thorough the garden, we visited the souvenir store. At the store, I could see many products that tour guide explained ... read more

On April 7, it was finally time for our two week vacation! First 10 days in Sri Lanka, then 2.5 days in the Maldives, and the missing 1.5 day would be spent on flying and layovers. The first 5 days in Sri Lanka were so fast-paced it barely felt like vacation but rather a crash-course in Sri Lankan culture. I will therefore post several blogs entries to be able to include the many pictures. On the first day, we landed in the afternoon and got picked up by a very nice driver, who had waited for us at the airport for two hours even though we were out no more than 20 minutes after our flight landed. We then drove for the rest of the day as we had to drive halfway across Sri Lanka to ... read more
