Day 7 of my Sri Lankan holidaydidn’t quite match the previous days in terms of excitement, although this may be because I’m much more interested in visiting the historic sites in Sri Lanka and learning about its history. We first visited the elephant orphanage in Pinnewala which looks after a few dozen orphaned wild elephants. Some may find this enjoyable, but seeing some of the elephants with chains around their ankles and how some of the keepers wanted tips for people to touch the animals made me think twice. I’d much prefer to see animals in the wild and leave what are meant to be sanctuaries behind closed doors so there’s not a possibly perceived conflict between animal welfare and profit. Maybe I’m being unfair, but personally this didn’t sit right for me. After making our ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling west from Mahiyangana to Kandy. We woke early, organised our packs and wandered down to breakfast at 6:30am. We’d ordered Sri Lankan omelettes the night before, as we needed to leave at 7am sharp, but there was a delay getting them out, so we waited in the dining area with a cup of tea and chunky fruit juice. Our omelettes were placed in front of us at 7am, so we gobbled them quickly, jumped into the minibus and left Mapakada Village at 7:10am. We were heading to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, which we had visited twice already over the past month. We crossed the Mahaweli Ganga (Sri Lanka’s longest river) as we made our way out of the small and slightly nondescript township of Mahiyangana, which sits 80 metres ... read more

Quelle chaleur !

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south from Dambulla to Kandy. After navigating the tourist rabble and evading the intense morning sun at Dambulla’s Cave Temples, we jumped into our minibus around 10:30am and set off on our journey to Kandy. We’d only left the bustling city of Kandy four days earlier, and we were looking forward to returning. On the way we stopped in Matale, a small regional city in Sri Lanka’s renowned spice growing region. It was a welcome break after being on the road for an hour. The sole purpose of our stop was to visit Luckgrove, a beautifully calm and lush roadside oasis that specialised in spices, herbs and indigenous Ayurvedic medicine. We made our way through Luckgrove’s shaded spice gardens to a thatched hut, where we watched a cooking demonstration in ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling north-east from Colombo to Kandy– Ren’s birth place. We woke early at 4:30am, as our train to Kandy was leaving from the Colombo Fort Railway Station at 7am. We’d slept well and felt refreshed – our jet lag was gradually disappearing, thanks in part to our incredibly relaxing hotel (Taru Villas Lake Lodge) in Kollupitiya. We checked out around 6am, and Saman (the affable and ever reliable three-wheeler driver we’d used in Colombo) was waiting for us. Armed with fresh breakfast parcels (egg sandwiches and bananas) from the hotel kitchen, we headed to the railway station. It was disappointing to see a betting shop open at such an early hour, but I imagine if you have nothing, the prospect of winning something must be very alluring. We arrived at the ... read more

I'm sitting on a train on one of the world's most scenic routes, next to a very friendly and smiley Buddhist monk; he offers me some peanuts and a pakora. To my right are a bunch of local teenagers clapping and singing along to the beat of a local drum - it seems to be something you see much more often here than you would in any Western country - creating some real atmosphere and even getting a couple of white girls up to dance with them. Here I was again, remembering how cool and lucky I was to be here, to appreciate this moment. With regard to the Buddhist monk, I was surprised to discover upon arrival in Sri Lanka that Buddhism is in fact the main religion here. I thought that naturally, Hinduism might ... read more

Owing to rubbish WiFi only just able to blog again. So the last few days involved travelling to Kandy in the rain via a spice plantation, where the guide gave me a hard stare when talking about the merits of red pineapple for weight loss. Then an unexpected stop at Aluvihara Rock Cave temple where we once more paddled in the rain, climbed a million slippery wet steps and got drenched. This place was slightly different though in addition to all the Buddha's were also lots of graphic paintings of demons doing an assortment of horrendous things to the people who end up in hell. Not only that but there was also a cave full of nearly life size models demonstrating the various torture methods and punishments meted out by the King of the time. No ... read more

Friday was our lazy day. We davened on the balcony which overlooked the jungle and all we could hear were the sounds of the birds and the weir. (Well there had to be a reason it was called Weir House - it was situated far above a weir which diverted some of the canal water.) For breakfast we enjoyed string hoppers with dahl curry and sambal which is a very hot curry along with fresh fruit which tasted divine. We lazed around until Shabbat reading and playing Boggle. I finished my Agatha Christie book "Sleeping Murder" and Caroline finished "Decline and Fall" which meant that I had a new book to read for Shabbat! Don had read "The View from Serendip" on the flight to Sri Lanka. This short work written in 1977 by Arthur C. ... read more

What a relaxing town. Centered around a beautiful and clean(ish) lake, Kandy is a mix of modern hussle bustle with old heritage and religious attractions. The central religious attraction is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It supposidly houses a bhudda tooth and three times a day it is revealed to devotees. We joined the throngs of people to witness this in what was fun filled hour of queing to see the relic. All you can actually see is a smallest golden urn but it is revered by all. We visited a small graveyard close by where the English settlers were buried. The caretaker gave a small tour explaining some of the significant tombs. He was proud to inform us that Prince Charles had visited around 2004 and took special note of a 24 year ... read more
