As we set a 7am alarm at midnight after a very long day of international travelling we wondered if we were being a bit too optimistic, but we really wanted to make the 8:30am train to Kandy. It turned out no alarm was needed, our bodies were tired but too confused to sleep properly and so we’d woken every hour and by 6am were wide awake, albeit not inclined to move. Marie’s colleague had recommended a place he stayed at when he extended a work trip at his own cost. A simple but really nice tidy room with great bathroom, good wifi and in a quiet area. We were stoked to have it booked for our return to Colombo. While not our main destination Sri Lanka was somewhere we both wanted to go, and it fit ... read more

Our train to Colombo is at 3 pm, so we have breakfast before visiting the Temple of the Tooth. Breakfast is in fact a source of great excitement; there is cheese on the buffet. I have been craving cheese for some considerable time. We walk into town round Lake Kandy. It is the home of a huge amount of wildlife; so far we’ve seen birds, fish, turtles, monkeys, bats, chipmunks, even a huge monitor lizard. We reach the Temple where one of Buddha’s teeth is housed in a series of 6 gold caskets. The queue to view it is enormous, plus it’s full of devotees dressed in white. It feels wrong to impose on their pilgrimage to gawk, so we just wander round the edges. We enter a shrine which is rectangular and has Buddhas on ... read more

We are breaking the return journey with an overnight stop in Kandy. This time we take the express train. It is a modern Chinese train with an air conditioned first class carriage. It’s quicker, more comfortable and we face the direction of travel. But it doesn’t have openable windows so it’s not so good for viewing the scenery as we descend towards Kandy. The difference in altitude is 1400 metres, so whereas we chugged slowly uphill two days ago, our return involves hurtling downhill at breakneck speed. It is a relief to reach our destination as a selection of small children have swung from the seats and parcel shelf for much of the journey. We reach Kandy around lunch time. We check into our hotel and head straight to the rooftop pool to cool down. It ... read more

Sri Lanka 26. Dez. Interessanterweise kommen d... read more

Woolly says – Our journey continued, the talk inside the car was all things elephant, until I pointed out that an elephant was a treat whereas a mammoth was for life, Jo sighed and patted me on the head. Our next destination was to see a tooth, I really had no idea why we wanted to see a tooth and my carer wasn’t giving anything away, I sat back and considered the fact that they might be taking me to a dentist, not a trip that I was happy to participate in. The road had started to climb, and the views of dense vegetation flashed past, I set about counting statues of Buddha but ran out of paws within seconds there were so many. As my ears started to pop with our elevation we pulled into ... read more

Ta ma ... read more

... read more

Day 7: Monday 11 September- Kandy This morning, after we were taken to another Gem Museum & Shop which showed us how they mined gems, we visited the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. At one time, these beautiful botanical gardens were reserved exclusively for Kandyan royalty. Today even commoners are allowed into what are, at 60 hectares, the largest and most impressive botanic gardens in Sri Lanka. It was a beautiful garden with Orchid House, expansive lawns and manicured hedges, massive old trees from throughout the world and colonial buildings dotted throughout the park. We enjoyed a coffee at one of the restaurants in the gardens. The day was hot and humid again so it was lovely to sit in the cool. Fernando then took us through the very busy local fruit and vegetable market where we ... read more

Up early and a run around the lake, great seeing the town as it awakens and gets ready for another day. A lot of school children on their way to school (7.00am so school day must start early)and busses and other traffic gridlocked around the lake front. Came across Chris who was out having a walk. Breakfast in the guest house was good and included small rolled up pancakes with a coconut, caramelised sugar and cardamom paste inside. Really tasty and refreshing. One thing that was a bit off putting was the staff standing around watching and trying a little too hard to please, we understand they are doing there best and probably in the Sri Lankan culture it is ok but we found it uncomfortable. The lady who owns the guest house (and I would ... read more

Up early and leave at 6.30am to climb Lion Rock. Marie and Donna decided to stay at the bottom and look at the ruins and gardens there while Chris and I went to the top. A great walk up, mix of stone stairs, steel stairs hanging off sheer faces, a couple of spiral staircases. On the way up you pass through an area with a rock overhang and the back wall has the remain of a number of ancient paintings. The top was spectacular, 360deg views and because we were so early and made good time up there was only a handful of people there. Even managed to spot the girls down on the flat! After a quick look around the museum returned to hotel and breakfast and into another van for a ride to Kandy. ... read more
