Fiona's just gone home, and so ends our week of mad tourism in an attempt to squeeze the country into a nutshell for her. This also means we don't have to do any more touristy stuff for the rest of the time we're here, yay!... read more

Huh? It's some time in Vietnam, I have no idea which. Slept not at all. Sun is rising here in Korea, but it's already 8 a.m. Isn't this this land of the rising sun? Or no, I guess not. Had a great last day in Hanoi. $4 pedicure that lasted 90 minutes, which is a long #$#( time for someone who actually hates pedicures but I made myself stay and knew I'd be happy on 24 hours of planes with nice feet. Which I am. Also ran around buying gifts, and of course, lots of jack fruit snacks, which I am now addicted to. And coffee peanuts. Also some of that rice liquor... Will be back in NYC in only 26 hours, or something from now! Will download photos if I spring for another internet card. ... read more

I just wanted to add a couple photos from the past few weeks. I'm really getting used to a normal life here, or as normal as possible, but its stange to stay in one place for so long. I just had a week break and stayed around Seoul while most of my coworkers hit the beach in the Philippines. There was a ton to do around here though and I had fun, a little too much maybe. Christmas Eve here is like New years back home, everyone and there mother is out partying, so we went local. Then one of my coworkers had a birthday a few days later. For New Years I went to see some big Italian DJ called Benny Banassi, who was actually really good. During the countdown they had all these ... read more

After leaving Australia on the 27th... leaving the teary-eyed behind... we prepared ourselves for our inevetible onslought apon malaysia. This involved a fair portion of drambuie on my (dylan) part, however, matt piked after a couple of games of chess... During our stay in KL we partook in some sort of cheap brandy called 'Three axes' and a lot of chinese food... (photos included). Since our arrival in Korea, we have not really done a lot of sightseeing as we're waiting for Fiona to arrive, and for matt to stop eating (he eats perpetually). We have however studied a little Korean, missed the level test for our University (through no fault of our own), and seen a lot of friends from last year. Well... photos shall be included... most of which have been taken at our ... read more

Okay, I'm on a 3 hour layover in the incredibly clean and actually sort of pretty Seoul airport. Flew in on Korea air, one of those double decker planes. 15 hours but I stretched across 3 seats and kind of enjoyed it? Only a couple hours sleep, despite 2 xanax and some wine but therre were lots of movie choices and i got work done. And the flight attendants were really nice, despite the fact that they had to wear very uncomfortable looking outfits. Though I was able to read all about them in the inflight magazine, which I am not proud to report I read cover to cover at least 3 times. Next flight is 5 hours and it's 5 something a.m. here (14 hour time change -- no idea still what the difference is ... read more

This trip turned out to be kind of an Asia sampler tour because of the people we wanted to see and the flights arrangements we made (SF to Singapore, with loooong layovers in Seoul). We spent a few days in Singapore and Seoul at the beginning and end of our trip and we spent the bulk of our time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in Vietnam. We spent the first night of the trip, New Year’s Eve, in Seoul, South Korea. It was pretty cold so we bought some funky stocking hats from a street vendor and walked around the Gangnam area of Seoul. There were a lot of people out and it was pretty festive. We had some difficultly getting dinner at first. At the first Korean BBQ restaurant we went into, we were told ... read more

Ho, ho, ho…we are getting ready to leave for Thailand! I (Kristy) just finished my last class before our week long break and I can already hear the beaches calling my name. In general, it feels like time is flying by quite quickly. I know for all of you at home it has probably seemed like an eternity since you’ve seen our smiling faces, but I’ll make sure to include lots of pics this time so that you get your fill.  Let’s see…both Colin and I are working quite a bit so our weekdays are just like the weekdays would be at home except we eat more rice here and dodge more motorbikes/scooters while walking to and from work. (These guys prefer to use the sidewalks for some of their motorized vehicles and some days ... read more

Last Saturday I had to go to foreign teacher conference here in Seoul. So after a long night out on the town I had to wake up at 7am for a 45min subway ride to the other side of seoul with one of my coworkers. We were positive about it though, thinking maybe we would learn some teaching techniques, immigration tips or at least get some free stuff. Boy were we wrong. First of all, there were around 500 teachers at this thing from all over Korea; one girl we met travelled for 3 hours to get there, so no small get-together here. The fiasco started off with a girl reading word-for-word the imigration laws off a handout we already had. After that a guy gave a serious speach with an overhead projection of his ... read more

I was told it never snows in Seoul by everyone here. I guess they were wrong because it came with avengence last night! Then today I took a trip to the DMZ at the border between North and South Korea. It's 4km wide and runs the length of the Korean Penisula with huge razorwire fences and armed guards. We were allowed inside after multiple checkpoints and passport checks by intimidating South Korean soldiers. We got a great view of North Korea and its "propaganda village" just over the border. No sighting of Kim Jong-il though, maybe next time. ... read more
