The creature we have become is quite an interesting one... things seem to be known about Matt and myself by people we have never met... interesting... Anyways, we've taken Matt's class for a night out and taught them drinking games etc... we've also been to the top of the tallest building in Seoul, and met some friends, had cup noodles for lunch because all of the shops are closed for the Chinese New Year. ... read more

This weekend was Lunar New Years in Korea and all over Asia. During these three days, Seoul comes to a grinding halt as most Koreans leave the city to visit their relatives in the country. On this holiday the grandchildren preform a ceremony paying respect to their elders. This nice little ceremony pays off, as they get fat envelopes stuffed with cash in return. One kid at my friends school got 1 Million Won last year ($1,000). Now thats a Happy New Year! The New Year is also alot more than that. The Urbanites get to visit their roots outside the big city, visit with family and eat traditional food. I went with some friends to a palace to soak up some culture. Alot of Korean families dress they're little girls up in the han-bok, a ... read more

So I am totally not sure what's up with Chris. The man is what I would call extremely strange. We decided to spend the day today with his Vietnamese friend who is a private named Tairen. So first the two of us go and meet him and the three of us go out to find a place to eat. We end up eating at the Outback Steakhouse mainly because it's Chinese New Year and everything else is closed. When the waitress walks up to us she starts asking about our order in English. Before Tairen can even look at her he says "I can't speak Korean" in English. However, once she looks at him she starts speaking Korean. Tairen repeats "I can't speak Korean" a couple more times until she finally gets it. This is an ... read more

So as I said I arrived in America yesterday and have been having a little bit of culture shock here. Wait a second, where am I? I thought I was supposed to be in Seoul. Well, complicated comes to complicated and it turns out that when you live on a base you really do live in the middle of that other country. They don't joke around when they say it's American land in the middle of another country. I went to a high school talent show with Chris last night because he had to do a report on it for the newspaper. There was not a single Korean anywhere to be seen nor was there anything that even remotely looked like anything Korean. American food, architecture, people, and English. For the intermission they were selling things ... read more

Well, today was interesting....I made an appointment a long time ago at Toni & Guy to get my hair done today. I always go to the same guy because he speaks English and he does a good job on highlighting and cutting. I had thought that it was strange that they were open on Chinese New Year, but whatever. So I show up today, and he had opened the salon just for me! Oh my gosh...I was embarassed that he had done that. I could have gone another day....so I spent 3 hours in an empty salon with my hairdresser. Kind of strange, I felt like a celebrity. Anyways, he did a great job and I a happy. Toight I went out to dinner at TGI Fridays with Anna and Mike. Mike ate the hugest slab ... read more

Well Happy Chinese New Year to those of you who celebrate it or even know what it is. I'm sure Dalian is completely lit with fireworks today as the number of fireworks has definitely been increasing over the past couple of days. Also the amount of red one sees has been increasing (and no, I'm not a bull). Yesterday I had a really awesome day. I woke up to Michael calling me and asking me to open the door for him. He moved the last of his stuff into the extra bedroom in my apartment. Then the two of us went over to Starbucks (yes, the American one) for breakfast where we met one of his friends who is Chinese but goes to school in Australia. Michael and I have been hanging out with each other ... read more

Well, it is Chinese New Year, and its pretty nice at the moment because everyone seems to have hightailed it out of Seoul. I can actually get on a subway without having to push myself into the car...haha. Last night a bunch of my friends and I; Karla from Canada, Tim from Canada and his friends Jeff and Devon, Mike and Anna from England, Corey from Canada and his wife Rebecca from New Zealand. It was great, quite an international crowd hanging out in an Irish Pub in Korea....haha Kind of an oxy-moron. We had a great time, Mike and I were drinking beer from North Korea (I know shame on us for supporting the communist beer....) and I made to bulleyes in darts, pretty cool....Today is actually a really nice day, kind of a prelude ... read more

We left Singapore to return to Seoul for a day and a half and this time we stayed with Lindsay’s relatives, Ken and Mary. They showed us a great time in Seoul. We saw some fun neighborhoods, a few temples and palaces, went hiking in Bukhansan National Park near their home, and ate some delicious Korean food. After Seoul, we hopped back on Korean Airlines for our flight back to San Francisco. ... read more
