So when is the magical when I get up and everything just seems normal? It always feels like it is right around the corner...I have confidence moving around and stumbling my way through conversations, I know enough people here that I am now woven into the tapestry that is Bundang. And yet, something is still unsettled. Maybe that is a good thing. Maybe on the inside I don't want to be settled. It is refreshing to, for once, be shaken up- for life to be unpredictable, and for my identity to be a little blurry. It makes for an easier transition- easier growth. It is strange to me that I have not gone out of my way to develop in depth relationships with the people I live with yet. I like the flexibility of staying on ... read more

I have a gym membership now. That was a big thing to get out of the way. And it has been the success I wanted it to be. It has pulled me out of my physical slump. Mornings are easier now. But a cough has been going around. Actually, it is a brutal Asian cold (not to be confused with Asian flu, I hope) that lingers in the form of a dry, irritating, nagging, painful in that itchy sort of way, cough. This, in and of itself, is not the end of the world. However, Dreaded Class 14 has created a situation in which the cough has become a very big obstacle I have had to tackle. "Teacher Black Monkey!!!" William comes tearing towards me as I enter the room, tea and box of white board ... read more

Week 1 of Christine's Visit: We were pretty damn happy to have someone from home. It was so fun to show someone around our new home...with all its craziness. We packed a lot of sight seeing and touring into those two weeks. Here is a quick low down on week 1. - Dmz tour. This was a pretty interesting day. The whole day had this certain uneasiness to it. To think that we tourists were having a good'ol time, metres from North Korea...where the only things we hear about are atrocities of some sort. We were told when to take photos, and when not to. We would look over to N. Korea, but were not allowed to point or make any gestures as we were certainly under surveillance. Walking around the compound (shown in the photos), ... read more

Sorry to keep doing this to you all... but we really must share our doings or we'll go insane with the company of only ourselves :P. I know it's been a while since we spat our vile doings your direction, and for that we apologise, but this will be a really big hock for you all... one of those real throat clearers... anyways... enough of that. We've been all around the place seeing and doing various things. In short, I also went to the DMZ, it was pretty cool. We had to sign a piece of paper saying we agreed that the Korean goverment wasn't responisible for our lives... not too shabby. We've been out and sang songs and stuff as usual... there's been a few class parties and games of pool to be had. We've ... read more

Well, I survived the bitter winds and the freezing temperatures of Seoul. I also survived 42.something kilometers of running.....something I will think twice about the next time I am presented with the chance to run a marathon. It wasn't so bad the first 16 miles, but after that I wanted to end it...haha. seriously, though the legs cramped up and I found myself looking for a subway station to make a last minute ditch....luckily there weren't any nearby at the time, so I finished in 4 hours, 43 minutes. It was rough, everyone was sick of the evil wind (I thought Kansas had pretty bad winds in March, but Seoul definitely has KS beat), as well as the awful cold. The day before the race it was 50 degrees, but there was a yellow haze from ... read more

Somewhere I heard it described in this way: the desire to fall deeply in love with something is that the world becomes much more manageable. Passion for something, one individual focus for that passion, allows one to center their attention, to keep from spilling all over the place (I think it was the movie "Adaptation"- I'll have to search for the actual quote- certainly its eloquance will exceed my awkward paraphrase). Being a person of passion, this makes absolute sense. This may be the actual reason I have a love affair with being in love- the intensity is focused, cleaner, less erratic, contained. However, travel awakens passions the heart has forgotten or has not yet been introduced to. It splits us open and lets our obsessions come oozing out, chaotically bouncing off foreign terrain and dodging ... read more

Classes started on Thursday the second. The system here is “try before you buy,” giving students a chance to attend classes before they decide which to take. It turned out to work in my favor, as one I had signed up for was not at all what I had thought it was. Plus another that I wasn't excited about looked like the most interesting class I will have here at Yonsei. Walking into a sea of people the day classes started jolted me back into a place I had seen before, but I couldn’t quite put my fingers on it. Oh, yes. That was it. A popular Korean soap opera where students ran to and fro greeting one another with huge smiles and words in expressive crescendos that I could not comprehend. As I watched from ... read more

Hello! A couple weeks ago we had the year end Kindergarten concert at school. These concerts are taken very seriously with the private Kindergartens. This is a chance for the school staff to affirm that the parents’ decision to pay big bucks for that school was a good one. (These “hagwons”, or private schools, are a dime a dozen around here.) As teachers, we started being told about the importance of this event back in November. We had to pick our class costumes in December (yes, two official costumes changes per class) and confirm songs, skits, and dances. Weekly, and sometimes daily, rehearsals were enforced from the big wigs because it was important that the “kids don’t make mistakes”. Obviously we wanted to do everything possible so that the students had success on the big night, ... read more

So this is going to be a quick entry. We have been negligent with reporting of February activities. The month seemed to go very quickly as we eagerly anticipated the visit of my sister Christine...on scene. She arrived on February 21, the same night that Kristy and I attended an Oasis concert. The concert was ok (they only played for 1.5 hrs, and did little to impress the crowd), but not necessarily worth the $66 American, and the 2 hours it took me to write out detailed directions (with pics) that would guide Christine safely from the Airport in Korea to our humble home. Yes...we are bad hosts and abandoned her. However, she did find the place and was happily enjoying a Korean brand beer when we arrived. So, these photos date back to the end ... read more

The prison wasn't what I thought it would be. I think that is probably what the majority of tourists think as they walk slowly through the halls, and cells, and torture chambers of what was once, not so very long ago, the Japanese prison used during the occupation. Many Korean suffered and died in these halls. So to walk though it all, to be right there, right in the middle of such place, is rather unsettling. However, it is not the idea of what once was that really shakes you to the bone. Oh no, it is what is happening right in front of your eyes that really throws you. It is the bordering on ridiculous voice overs to the tour that makes you feel so uncomfortable. Apparently it isn't enough for you to move quietly ... read more
