Hey everybody! ahnyoung ha say yo! I've been bad and haven't been posting to my travel blog regularly. I have another blog that I've been using a lot, and neglecting this one. I think I'm going to schedule updates on a set day of the week. How does Wednesday or Saturday work? Why not both. Ok, I from this date forth will try and update either wednesday or saturday if not both days. I suppose if you're in the US that means look for an update on tuesday or friday depending on how late I'm up. Honestly there's a lot going on in my day-to-day life here in Korea, but I know the people back home and abroad reading this would rather read the good parts. Or at least hear that I'm good and well. Last ... read more

It snowed I think thursday night. And last night a lot. I think today I'm going to get some pictures before it all melts. Or turns into ice. I swear it's below freezing out there. A cab gave me a ride today and flipped a u-turn to pick me up and spun in the ice a lot before driving me where I wanted to go. I thought the cabs were scary without the snow and ice, ha! My second weekend here in town is going well thus far, I might be going to a Korean cultural event in an hour and all I know is a friend here got free tickets so I'm game. Otherwise I'm going to go out on my own and try out Korean BBQ. They have grills in the tables. That's right. ... read more

I'm done with classes for Wednesday. I never appreciated the middle of the week as much as I do now. I'm not saying I don't like my job. My job's awesome, challenging and I take pride in my work. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jonesing for the weekend. Even with this being my second week here. A friend I made last weekend has some extra tickets to a cultural event this Saturday so I'm going for sure. A part of me wishes I'd flown in sooner so I could have time to get used to Korea and see places before I started working. There's so much to see around here and take in. My students seem to like me and I'm getting compliments from other classes of what they've heard about me. ... read more

Well, now we're onto week 2 of me being in Korea. Last weekend I climbed Mt Yudalsan, went to norae bang (korean karaoke) and met a ton of other foreigners to hang out with. Throughout the week I'll probably never see any of them. I dunno, maybe. I didn't see a whole lot of western faces all last week until Friday night came a long and suddenly my area's chock full of 'em. That was actually the first culture shock I think from coming here, seeing a big group of westerners aside from my roomates. Now that I'm getting somewhat settled in, I'm starting to buy food instead of going out. Generally I don't spend more than 8,000 won a day on food or even water, but it's time to hunker down and hold onto my ... read more

I got off work not long ago and my roomate is going to show me the foreigner watering holes around Mokpo, conveniently a minutes' walk from my house. I really mean a minutes' walk. I live on the third floor on a building with shops below. One of the things I like about Mokpo is how most everything I'd ever want is within walking distance. Even within "American Walking distance" of a block and a half and then stopping to catch your breath and ... eating a cheeseburger or something. So today I was waiting for some new passport photos to be developed (you use them for everything here, alien id card, hospital visits, etc) and went into a McDonalds. I saw four westerners and sat down next to them. They're the first non-Mia/Dylan or friends ... read more

It's wednesday my time, around 10:30am. Things are going well, I've just got to learn more of the language so I can order my own food and get around town. The teaching is challenging at times but I'm starting to like it. There are misquitos here in the winter, and unlike the ones in America that bite you and your bite goes away quickly - they leave you with a huge bump that itches like mad that doesn't go away anytime soon. I've stocked up on bug spray. Normally I'm against using some super chemical stuff for pest control, but now that I'm facing misquitos from the great beyond, my outlooks' changed. I hear they are worse in the summer, which I'm not looking forward to. Monday night after my first day teaching, my roomates took ... read more

I've been here a full day, I got in Saturday night at around five pm, and saw Seoul a little bit before we hopped on a bus to the train that took us to Mokpo. Actually I just saw a shopping center built into the train station in Itaewon and then the scenery at night so I really only saw the neon lights of the city while riding around on a bus, and some train stations along the way to Mokpo. Yesterday I got up early, not as early as today (I might try going back to bed after writing this,) and my roommates showed me around Mokpo when they woke up. The hard part right now is staying up past 9pm, which starting tonight I'll have to do because my work schedule is from 3pm-9:10pm. ... read more

Well... there's my summer. I intended to write in here more regularly, but unfortunately, the summer (and my intense job as Orientation Coordinator Team Leader) got away from me. However, this is just a note to let all of my faithful readers (especially those who haven't chastised me already) that I'll be updating on the full summer soon, including a second trip to Songnisan (see the posting re: the giant golden Buddha in Summer 06), a visit to the DMZ (at a different location than my Orientation), how we tried to visit the small town of Hwacheon to say hello and ended up in their Tomato Festival Parade, and so on. Believe me, there are adventures galore (and some pictures), and I can't wait to share it with you. For now, though, I'm going to greet ... read more

What a great weekend with my co-workers!  We climbed into one of the school buses and headed North East...or South East (not sure!) past the city of Pohang and ended up in this tiny town with lots of these little hotels and old homes.  The place we stayed was way too funny!  They had fake palm trees that lit up at night, one was green, one was orange and one was red!  There was also a light up cherry blossom tree that went from red to purple, green and blue and back again!  We were in awe of the tacky awesomeness because it was actually pretty cool!  The lower deck had all these bench swings and the one was wide enough to literally rest your whole body without having to bend your knees.  Needless to say ... read more
