During our time in South Korea, it is becoming more clear that the true beauty of this country is found less in the prominent neon glow of city lights and the ant-like busyness of city life, but perhaps more in the less observable and intangible aspect of the country’s personality. There is no doubt that Seoul is the heartbeat of this country, and indeed being one of the most densely populated cities in Asia, it justifiably earns its reputation as the liveliest city in the region. However, if you do happen to travel far enough to see the lights of Seoul, then perhaps you may be willing to travel just a little further. Venture beyond the angelic glow and I for one have begun to appreciate the ‘real’ South Korea, and perhaps the true beauty is ... read more

My wife and some of her friends have created a travel club, and this past weekend was our first trip to Wolchulsan National Park, in the South Western part of South Korea. This trip was recommended to us from our friend in Seoul, who also gives us "Bee Acupuncture", his son-in-law lives in the area (Yeongam), he is a professional photographer and wrote a book about Wolchulsan National park and the surrounding area, so he was our unofficial tour guide. We arrived in Yeongam Thursday afternoon and met up with Mr. Bak, who would be our tour guide for the next day-and-a-half. Our first stop was a massage place, we all enjoyed massages, you start out by laying on a bed that vibrated with magnets, we had to remove any credit cards and our cell phones, ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, it's been a great month out here in Korea. Some of the lesser highlights: I've learned how to play the intelude from Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on guitar. I've gotten back into drawing in a rather large but pocket-friendly sketchbook I've got. Some of the more awesome highlights: Discovered after going to Noraebang without drinking that my singing voice has actually improved. I guess that's due to a lot of practice... I swear I thought noraebang was lame before I came here and tried it. I've been writing up a storm in my handwritten journal. Jotting down memories, things I've done, impressions of what its' like out here. I'll blame that on not giving this travel blog its' due efforts, I assure you all when I return to the USA that you will ... read more

It's that time again! Well this past month has been a lot of fun and a lot of work. For the 4th of July we went to Oedaldo and stayed at a traditional homestay. The free water park on the island's been opened up. There's two kinda big pools full of sea water, which was a surprise when I cannonballed into the water. So last weekend was fun in the sun. We set off a lot of fireworks and sang the national anthem on the 4th. Sunday was rather low key, one of our party was very ill from the night before. It's surprising how beautifully green everything is here, after all I came here during the start of winter. It's been very humid here, but I think no different than say Florida or Tennessee. It's ... read more

Well on a plus side, I was able to get the photos from my Busan trip off of my camera. Downside is the camera is toast. Let's see, some highlights of this past month. Where to begin... With me in the latter half of my contract now and building up to its' completion I've been bouncing back and forth between wanting to stick around another year or going home. I love it out here and hate it at times. It's hard to explain unless you've lived on the other side of the world for a long time. I turned 25 last week. A freaking quarter century. I've been very contemplative in the past two weeks'. It's easy to admit that when I graduated High School I hadn't anticipated this is where my life would take me. ... read more

Happening only a couple of times a year in the South of Korea the tide allows a massive sand bank to be uncovered in Jindo which quite literally forms a bridge that you can walk across from the main land, 2.8km, to Modo island. I had seen a documentary about the Jindo parting of the sea even before I knew anything about South Korea so I was super excited at the thought of physically experiencing this rather random and miraculous event. So on Friday night after work I headed down to Suwon station to meet a bunch of mates and at 10:30pm we were off on a train trip down South to see this Jindo miracle for ourselves. The train ride was interesting. Since trains are a very well used mode of transportation they are just ... read more

Well, it's been awhile since I've updated my travel blog. A lot has been going on. For some highlights: My good friend John finished his contract a few weeks ago and we had a big weekend long celebration. I think right now he's in Cambodia, he planned on traveling after his contract was up. It was sad to see him go, but he'll be back in a few weeks to get his stuff and hop on an airplane back to the good ol' USA. The other night while walking home in the middle of the night, with pouring rain and blowing wind that had flipped my umbrella inside out I stepped on a snake. Scared the hell out of me. Of all the things in the world to accidentally stumble upon, a freaking snake. It was ... read more

This was my first break from school and I decided to get as far away as possible by bus. I went with my workmate Chris. We spent the first night in Wando where there was a yearly celebration going on. This little island is the home of famous golfer KL Choi and admiral Jang Pogo. The later, an admiral from the Silla Dynasty who secured the yellow sea and managed a trading route between Japan and China in the late 800’s, was the reason for the celebration. This celebration involved a drama on a fake ship and fireworks. Followed by what was a rather unusual performance late at night involving a group of transvestites playing traditional music while selling panty hose at a discounted price. The group also featured a midget on giant-sized traditional drums. The ... read more

Here's something I put in an email to my mom, thought I'd copy and paste it so I can have an update on here for Mother's Day. Happy Mothers Day! I gotta say I love this country. Yesterday was a good friend of mine's going away party and it was held on an island (Oedaldo). I had a make up day and had to work on Saturday. I went to work with my bag packed for overnight and rushed to the ferry terminal as soon as I could get out of work. I missed the last ferry by maybe thirty minutes. Not wanting to give up, I got in a taxi and went to the fisher's dock and found a boat that would take me and got there just as the sun set over the water. ... read more

Earlier this month, from the first through the 7th, my dad and Karen came to Korea. Here's my account of their visit. I saw him Friday the third through Tuesday the 7th. Well on Friday night, I had just gotten off work at 9:30. I knew my dad was taking the train into Mokpo, but we were having problems with his phone being able to reach me, so I walked to meet some friends for dinner. I get into the door and get a call from my dad, he's in Mokpo, and has been since 8:30pm. I took a cab to downtown and met him on the second floor of a building, Imsil Cheese Pizza. They had a lot of luggage, most of it being things from America I'd asked them to bring out for me. ... read more
