So, I arrived in Yeosu last Saturday, and it is indeed as beautiful as I remember it. Rolling mountains reach to the sky at every turn, and the smell, sense, and sight of the sea pervades every part of life here. Water is everywhere, and it is beautiful. In fact, it’s been quite nice coming here to quiet(er), beautiful Yeosu after three weeks in the bustling, city-fied Seoul. One of my acquaintances at the hostel in Seoul asked me repeatedly, “Have you seen anything living here? I can’t find a single living thing, except people and some trees. I mean, no birds, no bugs even. Isn’t that strange?” Having hiked on Bukhansan just outside of Seoul, I can’t say I completely agree with him. But there is a distinct lack of nature/green space from what I’ve ... read more

Many festivals in various parts of Korea have been canceled this year due to concern over the spreading of foot-and-mouth disease. The sea parting festival was no exception. Although the festival was canceled, the sea parting still took place, just without the hypnotizing mayhem that is a Korean festival. We decided to stay in nearby Mokpo and make a day trip to Jindo for the event. Buses run regularly between Mokpo and Jindo and the ride takes about one hour. On the way to Jindo is a magical place called Uhang-ri, a dinosaur museum and fossil site. We arrived to find this place nearly abandoned, with a few visitors strolling the massive grounds. The vast open field is strewn with “life-sized” dinosaur statues, a funhouse mirror maze, and plenty of places for photo opportunities. This place ... read more

Spring is by far my favorite time in Korea (minus the occasional yellow dust). The weather is mild and pleasant, skies are clear, and everything seems to be voraciously blooming. Sadly, springtime is also rather short here, so I'm trying to make the most of it by taking as many weekend trips as possible. Over Easter weekend I went to visit a friend who lives in Gwangyang, in the Jeollanam province. Although my friend warned me that there isn't a whole lot to do in Gwangyang, I was eager to get out of the city and experience spring. Weather is much nicer in the southern part of the peninsula and spring is already in full swing. So, I headed out there, eager for some refreshing air and countryside tranquility. I arrived to the pleasant sight of ... read more

Stamina, stamina, stamina, who's got the stamina? One thing you hear continually when you're living in Korea is talk about stamina. There's this real bravado when it comes to men being men. It doesn't seem to matter what you eat it's all good for the same thing, precious stamina. I guess you can never really have too much to use at your hearts content but I often find myself wondering if these claims of stamina are just some old superstition to get people to eat some of the foods. Personally I really enjoy a lot of the food here. In fact in about 2 hours I'm going to be sitting down and eating one of my favorite meals with Jen. A rich soup of boiled pork spine that falls off the bone like pulled pork in ... read more

Months had passed since I'd left my little Seoul apartment. I'd taken off after two years with my girlfriend to see what the rest of Asia had to offer and after that back to the western world. It was a much needed break and came with a deep sigh of relief. I remember that first week listening to the sounds of the Vietnamese jungle and not hearing a car horn of K pop for miles. No flashing neon, no storeclerks on bullhorns, just the quiet rustling of palm trees in the cool breeze and clear skies. Eventually I started to think back on my experience in Korea. The food, the people, the late nights at the bar drinking dongdongju and heading for the noribang. The hiking, the rafting, the pure enjoyment of not knowing what would ... read more

Bumping along down the countryside road, I peered out the front windshield as a new city appeared out across the bridge in front of us as the clock ticked past 10:43 in the morning. Yawning, stretching and pawing towards the ceiling, Shauna and the rest of the passengers awoke with a freight as the bumpy swaying bus drifted down the off ramp turning left onto a skinny two lane road leading us through the small dilapidated homes peaking out behind the green valley trees before approaching the edge of town. As we maneuvered into the seaside parking lot, everyone's eyes were alert with hunger as they peered out the windows wondering what lay ahead? In an instant the organizer came alive taking his position between the seats an all too familiar stance gazing out past every ... read more

Part 2: Yulpo Beach Yielding crazily side to side the entire bus awoke with a fright for their lives as the bus rounded yet another tight twisting turn down a hill laced in an early morning fog. Being three chairs behind the driver peeked out the window thinking we had left Korea all together with the rolling hills popping out beneath the haze, water dripping off the windows and farmers out beginning early morning chores. Three turns later, past a goat and a quick left our bus pulled into the Dangbae Beach Hotel parking lot in Yulpo Beach. Everyone began grabbing their bags and rustling their heads with the backs of their hands to wake themselves at the early morning hours. The organizer climbed on board clipboard in hand to notify us we would have ... read more

Part 3: Boseong Green Tea Plantation As the bus slowly backed into the parking stall, everyone's eyes gleemed with delight that this portion of the trip was complete. A few people still perched over their personal trashbags were cleaning up after themselves due to the erratic driving skills up the steep twisting mountain turns. The organizer climbed on board the bus to give this announcement: "Welcome everyone to the Green Tea Plantation. Here you will have two hours to explore, learn and take pictures about Green Tea. Please enjoy and be back on the bus at 9:30 am. Thank You." Aaron Wow, there must be all sorts of things to see and do here? Two whole hours! Shauna Sounds good to me! This was a new area to hike for both of us, and it was great. We started out by just driving on farm roads and stopping at any interesting sights, we stopped at one small lake that was covered in lilly pads. Later we stopped for a bite to eat, we found this little place om a back ally, I cannot remmber what our main dish was but we did get over 25 side dishes. The hike we decided to take was along a creek and by two large waterfalls since it rained the week before, still monsoon season when we went, the creek was and waterfalls were great. The hike was shaded by trees combined with the coolness of the water made the hike very plesant.... read more

Buddha's Birthday! Friday was a holiday-no work!! Lindsey and I decided to head out of town with a group of English-speaking activities group. Although we already prefer to hang with Koreans, I have no idea how to get around on my own (yet!). Friday morning, we headed to the train station and bought a ticket to Yeosu. On the platform we met up with the other three peeps going on the trip. As soon as I stepped off the train, I could smell and feel the ocean. I love that feeling! Yeosu is a small city with over 300 islands surrounding it. We visited two of the islands while there. It took us awhile to find the right bus. I am getting used to Korean driving-crazy! The bus driver was acting like Mario Andretti around the ... read more
