So... I'm back in Korea! Surprise! Well, not a surprise for all of you. I took a position for the summer working for Fulbright to train new ETAs (English Teaching Assistants--what I was). I'll basically be leading the same summer training program that I went through in 2006. Pretty cool, huh? Anyway, coming back to Korea has kind of been like a dream come true. It's all so familiar, it's practically like I never left. And yet, it's so hard to believe I'm back in a place I called for a year, that I came to know and love so well--though, of course, I had my ups and downs. (By the way, I have a couple blogs to catch up on--including a mission trip to Peru with MSN and some New Orleans relief work I did ... read more

Just back from climbing Mount Jiri. This one was totally different from the Mount Halla hike. First of all it was a two day trip and then it was also much more demanding. Mount Jiri is more a formation of several mountains with several peaks which are connected with each other. So you are basically walking along ridges and peaks. The trip started at Seongsamjae and ended about 30Km later at Cheonwangbon which is the highest peak at 1915m. I made it in 2 days which almost killed me but then again experienced hikers supposedly do it 1 day and I met a group of 80 year olds who were on a 3 day trip... I"ll be lucky to walk by that age. Due to the over night stay I had to sleep in a shelter. ... read more

So now I am back on the mainland in Gurye, a small county in the heart of Jeollanamdo province (southwest corner of Korea). The province gets abundant rainfall and is also home to the warmest weather on the peninsula. This helps to produce large amounts of agricultural produce, mainly rice, wheat, barley, pulses and potatoes. Vegetables, cotton and fruits are also grown in the province. This, I have to admit, I copied striaght from Wikipedia but it's totally true, I am in the Korean heartland of farming. I left Jeju on Thursday with the original intent of taking a ferry but I somehow managed to mix up departure time of the destination port with Jeju's. So I headed to the airport knowing that all flights that day were booked out but I was hoping my Start ... read more

Well greeting from Mokpo South Korea. It was a small change coming from Busan. Mokpo is quite a bit of a smaller town but still enjoyable. I did some mountain hiking on a day off which was really nice. I also have enjoyed meeting local pastors and other people from around the area. Also the mayor gave us ( the whole ships company ) free tickets to the Spa. Sorry though no picture of that because all spas in korea are no clothes required. Just the way God made you I guess !! Anyways enjoy the pics ! BEN... read more

I know I’m a few months belated, but July and August were quite whirlwinds for me. It was hard to say goodbye to my students, the teachers, my school, my host family, and everyone else who’d meant something to me in Korea. Let me try to catch you up. June and July flew by. At the end of June, I went to the final Fulbright dinner. It was nice to catch up with everyone and find out what was next for everyone. About 7-8 are staying in Korea for a second year, I think, which I’m impressed by. A lot are going to grad school, and many others are going back into the work force. I, also, am currently working while applying to grad school—I’m working at the Wesley Foundation (the Methodist campus group) at my ... read more

Pat and I are on our last week of teaching in Korea... this time it looks like for good. We are sad to end this part of our life - our two years here have been great! But we are on to bigger and better things (not sure what yet - lol)! We wanted to let everyone know we will be traveling Cambodia for two weeks before heading back to Ottawa. So keep a look out for our Cambodia entry! We are so excited for the trip! We will start in Siem Reap and make our way down to Phom Phen, then at the end spend a few relaxing days on the beach in Sihanoukville! If anyone has been and have any suggestions for us please let us know! We will see you all very ... read more

These are all the class pictures I took the final week(s) of classes. I can't find my old class schedule, so they're unlabeled (I told my students they could download them from this site). So, if you're my students, check out the pictures, and find whichever one is your class. Sorry! :-)... read more

Bonus points for those who get the allusion in my entry title. I couldn't help it, because the circle I've made thus far from July to June has made me think of the title of the Korean film (which, sadly, I have yet to see but I hear is pretty good) called Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. My life here has come full circle. And it definitely feels like it. Except that things are different this summer. I'm not bewildered. I'm not afraid to go to the convenience store and buy something-- worried about all that I won't understand, worried about embarrassing myself, worried about being just another foreigner who bungles on all the things Romans are supposed to do while in Rome. This summer, I don't feel like just another visitor--I feel like I'm ... read more

Hello all, In April, myself, Larry, and our friends Ben & Kim, decided to go to a big traditional Korean festival down on the southern coastline: The Jindo Mysterious Sea-Parting Festival. This world-famous festival occurs only once a year, when the sea parts and reveals a path the length of 2.8 kilometers and the width of 40 meters. It is exposed between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon and Modo-ri, Uisin-myeon because of the tide differences in the morning and evening. According to the legend, an old lady, who was left alone after all the Jindo villagers took shelter in Modo when dangerous tigers showed up in Jindo, eagerly prayed to the Sea God hoping to meet her family again, and the Sea God listened to her prayer and opened up the sea. Later, this magical parting of the sea ... read more

Okay, I appologise for the long blog, today was exactly what we came to Korea looking for. Our most incredible day... We didn't see a single other westerner today. Having made a bit of effort to get out of Seoul and the busiest parts of the country, we very quickly found ourselves far from anything or anyone familiar. We woke up this morning in the small Yeogwan that we found last night. Despite being tucked away in a little alley, we had a very peaceful night. The room was a little larger than the double bed against the wall, but there was enough space for a yo (futon-style) mattress on the ondol floor (wooden floor heated from beneath). I enjoyed my traditional bed and Cathy slept very well on the double bed, so that we ... read more
