We found a beach! WoW! Where to begin?! Our journey started at 5:45am, to try and get as much time at the coast as possible, however, after missing not only one... and no, not 2 either, after missing THREE busses (trying to decide which bus stop to wait at and which side of the road to be on, frik!), a subway trip, a sense of humour failure, and an Express Bus Terminal, we were settled into our final four and a half hour leg of the best and most beautiful trip we've had! The "Excellence bus" made a stop 2 hours into the journey for a MUCH needed stretch your legs and restore your blood sugar break (I get really cranky when I don't eat... ). I got a coconut doughnut roll with jam which turned ... read more

Welcome, spring! Spring has finally come in full force to my neck of the woods in Korea, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It's absolutely gorgeous, as cherry trees line the drives and outskirts of the school and other places throughout the city. I could easily get used to this. Too bad it will go too soon, and hot weather will take its place. I am ready for it to be green here, though! I've had about all I can of the gray-browns of winter... So, a few things to report since I last wrote. Last weekend was mostly uneventful, but it was fun all around. Saturday, I went to Sam Hye Won, the orphanage where I tutor elementary school kids, and ate lunch with some of the kids and staff there. It ... read more

And so, another semester begins. Spring is gradually coming to Yeosu. Well, I use the word "gradually" in quite a liberal way-- it's actually pretty cold outside right now, but the trees are just beginning to bud and, well, two weeks ago it was warm. Unfortunately, a cold snap hit again, and it's currently back to winter weather. Things are going well at school. There is a new foreign teacher here, and it's been great showing her around and helping her out. It's also been good to have someone to regularly speak English with. To top it all off, it's also lowered the number of classes I teach this semester to 13! So, I have 13 classes a week-- 9 classes of third-year students, and 4 classes of second-year students. I'm really excited to be teaching ... read more

Happy New Year! I know it's been awhile since my last entry, but to be quite honest, not too much has been happening around little old Yeosu. Early in January, I taught a two-week special class for my school (with about 5-10 students, focusing on writing and creative expression. Somewhere during that time, I went to Daegu (about 3 hours north of Yeosu by bus) to visit my friend Susie (I got to see some other Fulbrighters while I was there, too) and Andy, a friend of mine from middle school in Illinois who I hadn't seen in at least 6 years (and then, the last time, only briefly on a visit to Illinois). So, it was nice to catch up with him and to hang out a bunch with my Fulbright friends. Always good to ... read more

This past couple months in Korea have been great! Pat and I have the best jobs that we have ever had! The kids are great (well most of them), the work is very layed-back, and our co-workers are a lot of fun. Pat is loving the fact that the girls in his Girls Middle school love him. One of the girls told him that she loves him but "don't tell your wife Lilly because she will hate me"! They all send him love notes, its pretty cute. I went on a school trip a couple weeks ago. We went ice-skating! It was halarious! The kids were all stunned by the fact that I could skate. They all put helmets on and when we got on the ice they held on to the side boards for dear ... read more

Saturday, November 12, 2006-- a chilly autumn day. In fact, one of the chilliest since I've been in Yeosu. I woke up on that day at a bright and early 7:00. A non-working day, but, for me, a day soon to be filled with hard work, wine, and plenty of cultural lessons. 7:30 a.m., my co-teacher picked me up to go to the bus station to then go to the Suncheon "marathon" (as it seems all distance-running races are called here) where I would run a 10k (along with about 6 or 7 other teachers, most of whom were running the 20k or half marathon). I was excited to be running again (in races at least), and ready for a good (though cold) day. Only one other teacher was running the 10k with me, so we ... read more

So, my Dutch friend Chris visited me from Oct. 27-Nov. 5, and, boy, did we have a good time! First, I went to Seoul to meet him (he arrived on a weekend, and so I was able to take a bus up there after school on Friday), where he recovered his jetlag, went with me to sightsee, and ate his first Korean food. In Seoul, we did many things. I hadn't had the chance to really sightsee there before, because the only time I'd been in Seoul was the two days or so that I first met my school officials and said goodbye to my Fulbright friends (oh, and went to the DMZ!). So, we went to Insa-dong, Sinchon, Seoul Tower, one of the palaces, Kyobo bookstore (a giant bookstore with a huge English section. Too ... read more

So, what have I been doing since my holidays ended, you might ask? Well, there is a lot to catch you up on there, too. That's what happens when one doesn't write in one's travelblog for about a month. Tomorrow, I'm going to Seoul to meet a Dutch friend of mine who is coming to visit for about a week. We met in Ireland where we studied abroad together (you can actually read about him in the early entries of this travelblog :-)) and traveled together. I'd say he's my best friend from Ireland, so it'll be great to see him again, show him around, and have a good time. Plus, it's my first visitor from beyond Korean borders--woot! As for the two to three weeks between Busan and now, I've been quite busy. I'm still ... read more

... and more complicated. But in the meantime, a few things that brightened my weekend. First of all, the most amazing thing happened. Although I did not have much time to play piano back in the US, I did at least have the opportunity now and again. It helps me release stress and be creative and all that jazz. So, of course, I was missing it-- and the musical things I've always done-- but I decided to bite the bullet. I mean, you can't expect everyone to have a piano, and I figured maybe I could convince them to let me play one of the pianos at church during off hours or something. I could beg and plead. Or, just not play piano for a whole year. Well, little did I know that all members of ... read more

So, an interesting week or so, as always. First, the good things. On Wednesday, I had the day off because of testing at school, and my host family was out of town in Seoul. So, my independent self finally reasserted itself, and I decided to get myself on a bus that would take me to Hyangil-am, a Buddhist hermitage that is on the opposite end of my island. Lately, I've kind of waited around to see what my new Korean friends might show me, but because some things you just have to do on your own, I decided to stop being lazy and to get myself to at least one new place in Yeosu. And, boy, am I glad I did! Hyangil-am is one of the most breathtaking and peaceful places I have visited in Korea. ... read more
