Afternoon with Gwen The main mission for this day was to hook up with Sam's friend Gwen and learn all about the city and what-not. The funny part about our arranging to meet was me telling her to look for the "confused-looking white guy, wearing a Boston Red Sox hat". The secondary mission was to do a little selling on Chow's behalf to Gwen. Sam is a bit keen on her, and wanted me to put in a "good word". On the train over to meet her, I pondered my strategy for the sell. Sorry Sam, for spreading your laundry in public. I hope you don't mind. I'll make sure that Gwen doesn't see this site... In any case, if it turns out to be too much, let me know and I'll edit any mention of ... read more

I arrived in Singapore with my whole weekend taken care of for me by the gracious Sam Chow. He hooked me up with his family and friends in Singapore, who were kind enough to really take care of me. Alissa, his sister, took a lot of time out of her day on Friday to come and meet me at the airport, then bring me back to villa-Chow (which was about an hour away). After a fantastic meal from Sam and Alissa's mom, Alissa and I hit the road to see what Singapore's night had to offer. I was told as we left that Singapore was a casual place, and the slippers should be fine. Those slippers turned out to be a bad (but a good) idea later. Our first stop was the insane China Town. Chinese ... read more

Immigration experience After a couple of hours riding a bus from Melaka to Johor Bahru, finally we arrived at the Malaysian/Singapore Immigration border. The immigration/custom process is simple, if you know what you're doing: (1) getting off the bus at the Malaysian side of Johor Bahru to receive the Malaysian exit stamp, (2) getting back on the bus, just to drive less than a mile across the bridge, (3) getting off again, with all of your belongings at the Singapore side to receive the Singaporean entrance stamp. If you don't know how it is done, the drivers will gladly yell it to you. That was what happened when Beau and I just standing there, as we looked like idiots, tried to follow everybody that was obviously having the process as their daily routine. As we thought ... read more

So, I thought since Caroline got to rant after the LAX adventure (honestly do they have cleaning products in LA?), I'd take over for this one. Welcome to Sunny, well rather cloudy and rainy +27C Singapore! Its very clean and organized, I think if a house is something other than pink or beige it is immediately knocked down and replaced with something that fits the "code". I've since asked my travelling companion if Bangkok is the same and she sort of smirked and said..uhhh no. So now I'm expected lots of multicoloured crazy houses with a cattle ride from the airport to my hotel. Love the free internet access here at the Singapore Airport. Why, I could talk for hours..let me tell you in detail about all the movies I just watched (5-7 movies, I lost ... read more

You have to be in Sinagpore to see the Christmas Light Up in the shopping heart of Singapore, Orchard Road. Here the hundreds of shopping malls compete with one another to put up the best decorations for christmas season to attract the crowd, I was In orchard Road to take a few snapshots and to take in the sight and smell of Orchard Road.... read more

This is a land of contrasts, that is if you count concrete constrasting with glass. Everywhere you look there are huge towers that are invariably either a shopping mall or an apartment block or frequently a mixture of the two. 90% of Singapore's 4 million people live in a high rise of some kind. At least we are not talking about Hackney style council flats, but clean colour coded concrete jungleness. Everywhere we have travelled in Asia seems to be under construction and here is no exception. I read somewhere that all heavyweight buildings here is causing Singapore to sink slowly back into the mud from whence it came. I'm sure at some point the Singaporeans will think of some technological marvel that will avert the crisis at some point and it will probably have lots ... read more

Jen: We had dealt with a lot as we were preparing to say our final goodbye to Korea. Now, moving is always guaranteed to be a great time, but I can tell you for sure that nothing compares to an International Move. This in itself is more than enough to cover several journal entries, from carrying 6 huge boxes several blocks to the post office (where they speak no English) to the continuous episodes with our lame director. However, we feel that it is best to save some of these stories for our return. Jeremy: I was quite a site walking down the street precariously balancing three boxes. There were bruises and backaches and Koreans laughing at me to spare. Our director’s surprise request that we leave early meant we had a little over a ... read more

We flew from Kolkata (Calcutta) to Singapore at the end of October. We were only supposed to be in Singapore for a couple of days but we loved it so much we decided to extend our stay by another few days. Singapore stands in complete contrast to India. When I arrived in Singapore I wanted to roll around the pavements and lick the gutters, they were so clean! There are malls everywhere, shiny, gleaming and enticing. There is order and peacefulness (no hassles from touts, taxis, and stall holders). There is technology (even the air conditioner in the hotel room had a remote control!). The food and water is safe (and delicious). The public transport is effecient and reliable. The fact that the rules can be a bit fascististic (if that's a word) e.g. no chewing ... read more

Well, after the months of planning and work (actually not so much planning), we were packed(ish) and ready to head to Glasgow airport. A wee drinky there, where Ross got emotional about his last pint of Tennants and the mummies just got emotional. With mounting excitement we wandered through to the departure gate, only to turn back round and come when Ross realised he still had his penknife in hhis pocket. We cunningly solved this problem by buying an envelope and posting it back home. With that done, we could finally head to the security checks and be on our way. The flight from Glasgow to London was pretty uneventful, save for the excitement of getting fed, (mmmm British Airways), though there was some mild concern regarding the fact that we only had an hour and ... read more
