By now I am used to life in Singapore - no more getting lost - Hurrah!! It really is quite a nice city, the underground or MRT works amazingly well, the traffic flows and the place is incredibly clean. On the Wednesday, I explored, managing to find hundreds of enormous shopping centres. There seemed literally to be a mall on every street corner, if not more. It's surprising how much time accidently walking into two or three of these takes up, they are so large -before I knew it the afternoon had come. So had the rain. Torrential rain. This wasn't so bad though, as it gave me the opportunity to get to know everyone else in the hostel. Stories of travel and places new really gave me a boost, and made the idea of travelling ... read more

My journey began smoothly - made it to the airport, boarded the plane, and had a semi comfortable trip - except fo the fact that I sat next to two people who did not go to the toilet once on a twelve hour trip. However arrivng in Singapore it fell apart. Finding the correct bus was easy enough but due to the heat, the size of the place and sheer stupidity, I managed to get off the bus too late. This caused me to have to walk miles in the heat carrying both rucksack and daysack. Finally, tired and in bad spirit I found the road where the hostels and guesthouses were supposed to be. Most were 'closed for refurbishment' - i.e. two walls were missing. After being told by one guesthouse owner who only had ... read more

(Recalled Nov. '09) Monday Arrived at Singapore at 6:45am. Transfer to York hotel in another mini bus, this time not alone. Amazed by how neat, tidy and clean Singapore was. Got to hotel 4 hours before check in time, but they checked us in straight away. After the rudeness of many Europeans in the service industry, we were stunned by how friendly and helpful the people of Singapore were. Hotel was very very nice. By far the nicest one we'd stayed in but not the most expensive. We were also (well, Thea was) stunned by the humidity and heat. After coming from a European Winter, it was almost unbearable. Didn't help that I forgot to pack summer clothes for Singapore.... read more
