We have been in Australia now some 10 days and I am well behind with blog, I should have had it done a week ago so here it goes. Kuala Lumpur Jan 12th 2010, day 117 on the road and the day we arrived into Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Malaysia. First impressions of KL and Malaysia are pretty positive, the airport was clean and tidy and we flew threw customs and immigration in KL in 20 minutes, one of the best we have experienced. The drive on the coach from the airport to KL was pretty decent, the roads were good but you could see they have cut through what was once dense rainforest, it was impressive looking out the window all the time at the dense green fauna only a few meters away from the ... read more

Why, oh why did I come to Singapore? This is the question I kept asking myself as I traversed shopping mall after shopping mall (the Singaporeans could teach the world a thing or two about shopping malls I can tell you). Why was I even in shopping malls when I have no money? Well, I'll get to that. Question one, why was I here? Essentially, I came because I was in the area and it seemed a shame to miss it. Everyone I've met on my travels has insisted I must visit Singapore before flying home (ok, so everyone I met who hailed from Singapore insisted this, same-same) and so Singapore here I am. Question two, why the shopping malls? Firstly, it was raining, and not the sort of rain that's conducive to ambling round botanic ... read more

Three flights takes its toll, but arrived safely in Singapore. Getting the train from the airport was easy and eventually found our accommodation. It was really close to the station, but that didn’t help. We were in Geylang, not one of the best suburbs I suppose, but it was fine. We grabbed some dinner, there were plenty of places close by and the food was good. Pork Buns, Hainese Chicken Rice, Roast Pork Rice etc. Singapore rates the vendors, so it’s pretty easy to see where you shouldn’t eat. Everyone collapsed into bed, probably after 12 home time, so pretty tired. Next day we would catch up with local time. ... read more

Singapore was short and sweet and finished far too quickly - just like our Singapore Slings in Raffles. The obligatory cocktail in The Long Bar was one of thousands they sell every day, but at £13 a glass Andy capped us at one each - even the free monkey nuts wouldn’t persuade him otherwise. Sir Thomas Raffles not only has the monopoly on cocktails, but also the city as we soon discovered on our River Bumboat (real name) Cruise. The city still stands the way he designed it in 1819 and the Raffles name is attached to everything from the hospital to the pioneers original landing site. The boat trip was a great introduction to the city and its blend of old (English) and modern architecture; as well as the city’s “mascot” the Merlion. Half lion ... read more

When it was time to leave Vietnam, we were a little sad to be leaving. The people had been so kind to us, and we'd been ballroom dancing with a local lady, as well as to a birthday party with the family we were staying with. We were quit excited though about what would be round the next corner, and Singapore was completely different to anywhere we'd been! When we first arrived, we felt as though we'd been transported years into the future There were signs everywhere telling people what to do and what not to do. It was like the film, “Demolition Man”. On our first night we went o a few galleries and took a ride on the Singapore Flyer, which is the tallest observation wheel in the world and gave us amazing views ... read more

So then…stage 2 done…Oceana…tick, well 2 of your countries anyway. Things are getting scary as I am now entering the final phase of my trip, well gallivanting hobo style around the world anyway…! And I still wish that next lotto ticket I buy will be the lucky one, because I don´t want this to end, and this seems my only viable option if I wish to continue living as a tramp! Anyway, after I cried a bit on the plane then accepted the luxury of the quantas flight with a few jars of whisky and a few movies from their extensive collection, I awoke to night sky and the sultry lights of Singapore. I was in Asia, well Western Asia to be fair, but still Asia - Let stage 3 commence!…. First impressions in the airport ... read more

12th July 2009 With only one day to explore Singapore we headed to the harbour where we saw the famous symbol of the country, the Merlion. After walking around the centre of Singapore for a while we headed to Little India to check out a couple of Hindu temples. The one we saw was very colourful, with statues of the gods lining the outside of the temple. We headed to a nearby park for a sit down and we were treated to a chinese dragon display by a troupe of kids. We then headed to the night market for our first taste of street food in Asia. As luck would have it we sat near an old british guy who was commonly on business in Singapore and let us try some stingray. He then took to ... read more

Enjoyed Singapore but ready to move on. Our first hostel was lovely, very Singaporeish and modern but too expensive! So we've moved somewhere more basic but it's conveniently located in the red light district. But Singapore being Singapore it's still incredibly safe and clean and not as bad as people made it out to be. We've done all the touristy things, explored Chinatown, Orchard Road and Little India. There's so much shopping here, if I had any money it would be fatal! Began to 'get' Singapore a bit today, not really understood why people would want to live here but there's something nice about it, it is very perfect and so are the people - personally I prefer Africa with it's quirky little characteristics. Yesterday we went up the cable car up the mountain here and ... read more
