Just a fairly quick update to let everyone know how the trip went and that I'm here safely! After saying goodbye to Mum and Ashleigh I walked to the gate (40...the other end of the terminal!) to find the queue to actually enter the gate was massive! I was one of the last in the queue and they'd already started boarding the flight. I noticed the people in front had been given an upgrade to business class and started thinking to myself how good it would be if they were that kind to me as well! So instead of saying, "you've been upgraded, Sir" she just said, "Can you come over here with me please, Sir" so was slightly worried I'd done something wrong! Anyway, she did finally tell me I'd been upgraded. Was totally lost ... read more

Day 32 Saturday Our last full day, but no time to waste as it’s off early for a City Tour. This took us to the Marina, China Town, a gemstone factory, the Orchid garden in the Botanic Gardens and Little India. But monsoon rain came early today. At the Marina there is a vast hotel complex (The Marina Bay Sands hotel) – three towers with a superstructure for swimming, eating, relaxing and a great view; apparently the tallest building in south east Asia. Look at the water and you will see lots of white balls floating – they are wish balls. People pay and make a wish and then release the ball in the Marina. Apparently it’s part of their New Year celebrations! The Chinese temple was a must to see and then to the orchids, ... read more

Day 30 Thursday Day 31 Friday On Thursday we flew to Singapore. The advantage of leaving from Christchurch was that, being a small airport, check-in wasn’t three hours beforehand. We arrived in Singapore about 6pm (local time) in the teeth of a torrential downpour. This is to be expected at about this time every day – we are in the monsoon season. The hotel is large, busy and impersonal – quite a contrast from the places we have become used to. OK- new city so what to do. We had some ideas and had been recommended to go to the Botanic Gardens, so we popped on the bus ($1.20 each, that’s about 60p), the gardens were free and they were brilliant. We could get used to the heat walking slowly under large trees, plenty of shade ... read more

April 22nd, 2009 Ok, I got up, put on a green tee-shirt and beige pants, so I was all ready to go on a trip downtown to see the city. First, me, my mom and dad and Susan (who's a friend of mom's and lived in Singapore for one and a half years.) walked, took some pictures and then we saw a box office for a river tour! We all wanted to go! So, we bought some tickets, and went on the tour! I took all the pictures, and you know what? The tourguide was a radio! When we were finished, we went to the History Museum....BUT: we only went to the Gift Shop!! Hee hee! So that's a funny part that I told anyone so far! Then finally, we went home, heads up for Singapore ... read more

Into the Rain forest After speaking with my dorm-mate last night I decided to search for the rain forest. I was still a little unsure its exact name so I consulted the all-knowing Google. There were two locations Bukit Batok Nature Park and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Bukit Timah was bigger so I decided to head there. I took the MRT then a short cab ride to the park entrance. As we pulled in, I could see quite a few monkeys in the parking lot...good start. There was a pretty cool network of about 10 trails that were centered around a few granite quarries and the tallest hill in Singapore. The trail started out near sea level and climbed almost without stopping to the 164m (~535ft) summit. I was thinking there'd be a nice view of ... read more
