I still can't believe my whirlwind of Malaysia/Brunei has come to an end. It was so great catching up with the family although I've learned its close to impossible to fill in the 10 year gap between my last visit. Likewise even though its only been three months since leaving Canada it was SO awesome to see Mom, Dad, Ray and Terr!! I flew out of London July 31 and a day later, flying over Malaysia and moments before landing in Kuala Lumpur, my weariness from the journey was immediately reawakened by the visual intake of the South China Sea, beaches and rainforests. By that time I was overwhelmed by excitement to see family and was absolutely salivating for leksa, nasi lemak, satay, rojak, ABC etc. Next I carried along to Miri which seemed to have ... read more

Sorry about the lack of blogging but we've been having trouble finding internet places and any time on our tour to blog. We are now in Sepilok Orang-utan centre in Borneo, but more about that later if we have enough time. For now, this'll be another marathon. Happy reading! We left Kota Kinabalu for a long bus journey on Sunday. We met up with our tour the previous night, a group of sixteen in total and a leader called Wan. This part of the holiday is a 10 day tour organised by Guerba and Tropical adventures of Borneo. The journey started in a little bus to the Highland which had trouble ging up some of the hills. We saw some great landscapes and even a few glimpses of Mt. Kinabalu, which we were to climb on ... read more

Well, Pam and I have spent the last few days scuba diving, and it's been great. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we had arrived in Koh Tao with high hopes for some of the best diving in the world. We arrived by speedboat (1.5 hours from Chumphon, which was an overnight busride from Bangkok), and checked in to Easy Village, just a few mintues walk from the pier, at a pretty good price. We gota fan room (i.e. fan, but not A/C) which was fine because it wasn't too humid and it was not too hot at night (well, relatively). But it was raining on and off that whole day and the next, so we decided we shouldn't stay on the island too long. We booked a slow boat (overnight) for monday night to ... read more

I was so glad to get out of Kuala Lumpur. I know there are people that visit there or even live there that love the place, but I'm definitely not one of them! Bukit Fraser on the other hand, I LOVE. Nice forest, nice temperature (21 degrees: Bukit means hill, so the elevation's about 1500 metres), nice birds, lots and lots of nice butterflies. I was planning on staying there for a week and then heading for Taman Negara, but I met a couple of German birders there called Ingo and Conny who had a rental car and were going to be driving all the way to Taman Negara. It would have been like looking a gift horse in the mouth, so I changed my plans and got a lift with them, giving me only two ... read more

3rd August The bus turned out to be OK. No water and sauage in a roll as in Thailand, but the bus was reasonable, comfy, and it made a couple of stops en route. It was a bit of guess work to realise that it was a comfort stop, driver just got out and left the engine running for air con. You had to assume cos you were at a cafe that this must be a comfort stop. The first time was lunch and it made me realise how easily kids learn from their parents/siblings, first of all I went in the 'Mens' by mistake, ah well, past having any dignity. Then I watched what everyone else did for their lunch and drink and where they pay etc and followed suit. Second time was just a ... read more

It’s time for a late update! Penang was… Penang. We stayed in Georgetown and initially we were a bit disappointed. It wasn’t very interesting but once we got outside of the main city it became much more interesting. We went on a day trip with our new Swiss friends and visited a few places. We started our day with a Buddhist Temple… Kok Lok something…. I am so bad at remembering these names of things. After our little ride to the top of the temple we got to see this giant statue being built in the process. It was so large that it was a bit overwhelming. No monkeys at this temple. We continued our day journey with a visit to the butterfly farm in Penang. It is supposed to be the best one in ... read more

I've finally found my Island Paradise here on Kecil.... The 5hour coach zoomed me up here from Taman Negara through the think jungle and over huge caramel rivers before I boarded the fast boat to this little island just off the north east of Penninsular Malaysia to find coral beaches, crystal waters and sweeping white sands. They say that Whitehaven beach in Oz is one of the most stunning but for me it's definately Kecil's Long Beach. The sea: I can't even begin to describe just how clear it is, (think of the idylic helicopter views shown in the holiday programs); tropical fish darting through your legs and calm thanks to the half-moon bay allowing you to float in a dream state washing your troubles away with every ripple. It's a bit pricey though; I'm paying ... read more

Today was supposed to be my best day ever. I was leaving Kuala Lumpur and never coming back. I was going to Bukit Fraser (aka Fraser Hill) where all the birders go. The information I had (from Lonely Planet or some-such) said I could catch a bus to Kuala Kubu Bahru (and from thence to Bukit Fraser) from the Puduraya station, from platforms 20 or 21. Sounded easy. I left the backpackers at 6am and crossed the road to the station. No luck at those platforms, there were no buses and no ticket people. I went to the information counter. It wasn't open yet. I asked around some of the other ticket touts. One said the information I had was old info, and to go outside to Mega Coach. I did, but there were no buses ... read more

The train to Kota Bharu was perfect - second class sleeper train had beds with little curtains on the side. I was so exhausted after our 5 hour hike that I crashed the second my head hit the pillow. It was perfect. I had a good 5 hours of sleep - until we came to our destination. We ended up getting off at a station before Kota Bharu so that we could share a cab with the french boys who were also heading to the Perhentians. After an easy cab-port-ferry transfer, we were on our way to Long Beach. The french boys ended up getting off at another beach, but most of the people off the ferry joined us on Long Beach (the popular tourist spot on the islands). The beach was MUCH better than I ... read more
