Getting to Penang was a bit of a mission. It was only one boat and yet between the delays, the overcrowding (including bags against emergency exits) and the total failure of the air conditioning it was grim. Nevertheless onwards to the old colonial madness of Penang. Its a strange but interesting place, with Little India, Chinatown and the colonial areas. The place seems frozen in time around fifty years ago, filled with little garages sporting tin 'Shell' signs from yesteryear and dilapidated Bitish buildings everywhere. There are some backpackers and also a few older expat dropouts playing draughts with the locals in the stifling heat. We had lovely food at a Chinese restaurant called Opera on the first night on one of the renovated streets in the centre. You start to get a feel for just ... read more

Next stop: Malaysia. Our first port of call will be the Perhentian Islands, two tiny specks off the coast of Terengganu Province on the eastern side of peninsular Malaysia. The trip from Koh Tao is quite straightforward (in principle...). Back on mainland Thailand in the city of Chumphon, Alex and I catch another southbound sleeper all the way to the Thai-Malaysian border. The train leaves Chumphon at about midnight and is due to arrive in Sungai Kolok (the Thai border town) at about noon the following day. After our night on the train I wake up and look out of the window in our little cabin, to find a Thailand I do not recognise, a Thailand many people don't know about. The natural landscape may not be that different, but the human one most certainly is. ... read more

Wednesday 23rd August Paul - Leaving the Highlands this morning was sad as we were all getting used to the lovely weather. Not that I'm complaining that it's hot all the time here (honestly) it was nice to have a little bit of cool weather for a change. After a couple of Roti's for breakfast we got on the bus that didn't start for an hour... no surprises there. Read for a bit before going to the toilet as the bus still hadn't moved yet and as soon as I got back we were off. The road down the mountains was ridiculously windy so trying to read "Great Expectations" wasn't going to well so I nestled my head on Laura for a couple of hours. We pulled into a place called Ipoh for a brief stop ... read more

The Grand Arrival After a long and painfully flight from London to Seoul then Seoul to Kuala Lumpur, I finally arrived almost 2 days after I took off. What a short day - 2 hours before landing in Seoul I was having breakfast, then 3 hours later I was being served dinner and a glass of wine. How bizzarre! However it felt like I had already left the UK before I even checked in at Deathrow's Terminal 3 - not a westerner in sight. My plan to arrive early and check in with a fellow travelling citizrn failed and all blags, lies and tales of potentially life threatening ailments failed to guarantee me a free upgrade. Still, the flight was not too bad - I feel that "She's The Man" works so much better in Korean, ... read more

Saturday 19th August Paul - Couldn't find where our bus was leaving from this morning (it's a tiny village with a bus stop...SURELY the bus stop!?) so had a mad scramble about to find it parked in a car park set back from the main road. Bizarre. Typical long bus journey (7 hours) involving hilarious westerners boasting about their travels and telling me how amazing the Playstation 3 will be "cuz it'll have the best graphics like....like...like.......ever!" Delightful and informed that's what I like! Also a random Irish guy proclaimed to the bus "this place is nothing like Ireland". Where do these people get such intelligent and witty comments from? Arrived in the highlands after a beautiful drive up a winding road past lots of tea plantations and rose gardens. The highlands is at an altitude ... read more

Hello all, It is with tears in our eyes that we write the final blog to complete the last 6 and a bit weeks of our intrepid travels! We can't believe it is all over... and the only thing we have to comfort ourselves is our 13 hour flight back to London, knowing that we will see our friends and family again, the excitment of a decent cuppa tea and the spark of adventure as we plan another short backpacking trip next year some time... yipppeeee!! Singapore: As you can imagine, it was great to land in sweltering Singapore after 'awesome oz' so that we could remember that we were actually on a 'summer' holiday again, we could sweat out all our excess weight again and Tim could wet his appetite for all the latest technology ... read more

What an amazing place the Malaysian state of Sabah in Borneo is! 2 weeks just wasn't enough to take in the amazing scenery, flora, fauna and marine life. We started off in the capital of Kota Kinabalu and used it as a base to explore South East Asia's highest mountain (coming in at almost 14000 ft), Mount Kinabalu. Unfortunately we didn't have the right equipment with us to make the ascent to the top, so instead we ventured around the national park at the bottom of the mountain. Martin also put his vertigo to the test again, by doing yet another tree top walk. This time it was just a rickety rope bridge suspended 41m above the ground! We spent one evening cruising down the Klias wetlands in search of the illusive big nosed Proboscis monkeys ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park August 18th 2006

Wednesday 16th August Paul - So got up again and went for breakfast. Made a plan of getting some drinks and food and trekking into the jungle for the day. The canopy walkway is suspended 30 metres above the ground so gets you right into the thick of the action so we were all looking forward to doing this. Got lots of 100Plus (basically Lucozade) and set off. As soon as we had walked for 5 minutes we couldn't see more than 10 metres either side of us! The jungle was so dense. All huge green leaves, swaying vines, enormous trees... it was an amazing sight and cool to think that we are in the oldest rainforest in the world. Walked for about 20 minutes, occasionally hearing the rustle of leaves around us and hoping it ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park August 18th 2006

Day one: 10 August: Thursday Ingo and Conny picked me up from outside the Puncak Inn and we drove down to the Gap where we birded for an hour or so, netting me seven new species. Then we headed for Taman Negara. We were going to just drive all the way there but a wrong turn at Jerantut saw us ending up at the ferry terminal at Kuala Tembeling instead. In terms of wildlife the boat trip is very poor (mainly Pacific swallows and water monitors), but for sheer style there's no better way of entering a national park. It may cost a bit more (but not much) and take a bit longer than the bus but it beats it hands down. The boat is a long low-sided affair with wooden plank seating, like a big ... read more

18 August, my last day in Taman Negara. I could have stayed there forever. Its just so easy and cheap: get up, go into the jungle and look for critters all day, go to sleep. Repeat the next day. It was awesome. But I thought I'd better be moving on. I was feeling kind of seedy when I woke up. I stumbled around for a while, then thought maybe food would set me right. I went to 'Family Restaurant' which wouldn't normally be my first choice, but it was the closest. The plain omelette seemed like a safe option for my stomach. Wrong. Omelettes are supposed to be light and fluffy. This one was fried. It was not good. For anyone going to Taman Negara and wanting good food I recommend 'Chess Corner' between the ... read more
