My time in Penang didn't get off to the best of starts. As many of you have already heard, my backpack got nicked from the luggage hold of the bus I took there from Kota Bharu. Thankfully I wasn't on my own: Stacey and Anthony, who I was travelling with were in the same situation. Long story short, we arrived in Georgetown tired, stinky and travelling pretty light! The guesthouse we stayed in (75) was great & the staff pointed us in the direction of some cheap clothes to get us started. I managed to replace what seemed like half the contents of my backpack in 1 shop - "Penang Emporium", which is pretty much a Malaysian equivalent of Edinburgh Bargain Stores: purveyor of goods to many many students! We treated ourselves to dinner in the ... read more

From Siem Reap I flew into Kuala Lumpur, or KL as everyone seems to say. My friend Laura recommended a great hostel called the Equator which, as promised was cheap, clean and had very friendly staff. I hadn't planned to stay very long in KL as time was running out and I wanted to get up to Penang (an Island further north) to both meet Laura and also to met some of my work colleagues from the previous year. I spent my time in KL seeing all that had attracted me to the city but most notably the world famous Petronas Towers. They really impose on the skyline and also serve as a great way to navigate around the city: orientating my map was nearly always done in relation to where they were compared to my ... read more

Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok One learns a lot about people when watching orangutans. Especially some of the people I know. I spent this afternoon at the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in north east Borneo, watching our cousins feed on bananas. They were all juveniles and aged: the rest were out hunting fruit in the forest and creating havoc in sugar cane plantations. At 3pm the local rangers bring out a few bunches of bananas and other assorted goodies to a viewing platform to bring the orangutans for us tourists to gawk at and for the orangutans to gawk at us silly tourists. The orangutans get better seats. About ten showed up - eight juveniles and two oldies - which is more than you would see in a week in the forest: orangutans are solitary animals, ... read more

Three times now I’ve taken a couple girls shopping, to the night market, to Batu, or to the mall. In this picture of us I am drinking fuel for shopping: fresh star fruit juice. They really like to shop so we didn’t have too much trouble passing our time. I bought a most outrageous little trinket, I’m not sure what to call it but it is some huge plastic crystals like they sell everywhere. I have hung it on my backpack. I’ll probably get robbed for it its so gorgeous, hahaha, no really I like it a lot. Mom, you know how I always wanted pink & sparkly things when I was young? Well, now is the time for sparkly stuff. I bought a pink purse at Batu Ferringhi, it is pink & covered in ... read more

The Kilabantan The longest widest crocodile infestedest wildlifest junglest river. I guess I had to go. 11 July I woke in Sangatan to find power restored to the city and had a leisurely morning before catching the bus to Mile Sixteen, where Uncle Tan’s guesthouse and office is. I met the other dozen or so backpackers who would be joining me on the trip, paid my money, and jumped onto the bus for the three hour drive to the Kinabatangan River. Amongst my fellow travelers were Mark from Singapore who also amused himself by taking photos with his digital SLR, three French girls, Crystal, Christine, and Natalie, with whom I would be sleeping (or, more accurately, with whom I would be sharing a hut and keeping awake with my snoring), and three Dutch guys who had ... read more

I arrived on Labuan, a tax free island that caters to the oil industry, to meet "Alex" who had promised diving work for $500 a day. (See ) My first call got through to his answering service, so I left a message saying where I was and giving my contact details. My next calls over the next two days didn't even get the answering service. I sent an email to Alex and Teresa and found that they were in the same situation and had just left the island in disgust. I waited around for another day, enjoying the cheap beer and meeting the local Filipinos but not much else - it is, after all, a port and oil town. Back in Kota Kinabalu I caught up with Alex and Teresa and we had a chat ... read more

Sipadan and Mabul One of the "ten best dive spots in the world" according to the literature. Certainly some of the best diving I've done. 14 July Heading to the oil rig I met my dive buddy, Juliana, for the fourth time at the pick up point for the Seaquest drilling platform. This time we recognized each other. The previous two times on Mt Kinabalu and at the Karaoke bar we were familiar but it didn’t click into place. A one hour high speed boat ride from Semporna took us to the island of …. and the converted drilling rig about 400m to the north. The drilling rig, the only one of its type, according to the literature, stands 6-8m above the sea in 15-17m of water, depending on the tides (they have big tides here). ... read more

Our arrival in Georgetown was met with a search for a room in sweltering heat that eventually ended after stumbling across a not too scummy guest house. The standard of accommodation in Malaysia seems to be the worst value for money compared to everywhere we have stayed so far, and it took a while to find a place that didn’t resemble a prison cell or smell of dead things. After securing a couple of nights at a friendly guest house, we took a stroll around the colonial streets of Penang’s capital. Georgetown possesses a diverse mix of race and religion and both China Town and Little India represent the huge mix of different cultures present throughout the whole country. The main religion here is Muslim, although both Hinduism and Christianity have a following but as a ... read more

We arrive in KL and check into a basic, but very clean backpacker lodge (Anjung). Things are starting to get very cheap - we pay 1 pound 50 each for an air conditioned room... Most of our time in KL was spent wondering around the city, taking in the sights and vast shopping malls. Unfortunately we are unable to go up the Petronas Twin Towers, satisfying ourselves instead with a trip to the top of the Telecom tower. We are rewarded with great views of the city. We were not overly enamored with KL - the city itself is pleasant, but not that special. We both felt as if we had a pair of scrutinising eyes on us and although we were never threatened in anyway, there was a edgy undercurrent that we had not felt ... read more

I'm writing today so that I can brag about how brave I am. We took our kids to the batik factory to create some 1' square batik art. I would like to say that I have improved since the last time I tried this art but by inspecting my results I think that if I am going to pursue this art any further I am going to have to put in a lot of time practicing. The main concept is to use a small metal instrument that looks like a pen with a bucket with a diameter of a penny attached to it. Yes, that's very clear & concise I know, that's because I am an English teacher now & I know how to explain these types of things. Ok, so I get that thing ... read more
