I've arrived in Kuala Lumpur! The bus ride from Singapore went smoothly - took a bus to the border and then another to Kuala Lumpur. On the way had a look at the Lonely Planet and chose a hostel named Pudu Hostel close to the bus station where I was arriving. The hostel turned out to be really good. I love the fact that Malaysia and Singapore have hostels for single backpackers - it makes meeting people so much easier!! On my first night I arrived at around 11 and spoke to my American and Canadian roommates for a while...but I was really tired from walking around Chinatown in the morning (it was HOT) and then all the travelling. So I read a bit and fell asleep straight away. The next morning I decided to go ... read more

From Siem Reap I flew into Kuala Lumpur, or KL as everyone seems to say. My friend Laura recommended a great hostel called the Equator which, as promised was cheap, clean and had very friendly staff. I hadn't planned to stay very long in KL as time was running out and I wanted to get up to Penang (an Island further north) to both meet Laura and also to met some of my work colleagues from the previous year. I spent my time in KL seeing all that had attracted me to the city but most notably the world famous Petronas Towers. They really impose on the skyline and also serve as a great way to navigate around the city: orientating my map was nearly always done in relation to where they were compared to my ... read more

4:30am is not a great time to arive in KL, as there is bugger all to do until about 10:30 when all the shops and tourist stuff opens. It was 29 degrees and 92% humidity when we touched down at 4:30am! I have taken in the sight of Kuala Lumpur (Yes, that is intentionally the singular). It should be more widely advertised that the Petronas Towers are closed every Monday! Instead, I went up the Menara Tower, which is like a smaller version of Centre Point Tower in Sydney. It has a viewing deck with the full 360 degree view of the city, so I got some happy snaps of KL. Feeling adventurous, I tried some local quisine for lunch in a tiny Chinese restaurant in a back alley, which turned out to be quite nice. ... read more

Our arrival to Malaysia should have been on time since Singapore and Malaysia are so close (it’s a 7-hour train ride); however, when I woke up at 7:15AM and looked out my window, I saw no land and we were going very slow. Well, after an hour or so of no updates, the captain announced that there was a technical problem with the ship and we would be making a late arrival. Apparently, it was an engine problem. I HEARD that three of the four engines were not working or something along those lines, which could have been true because after Taiwan we definitely sped because of that typhoon (which delayed a lot of passengers in Taiwan that very night, I read in the paper). Anyhow, at about noon-ish we started pulling into port. Definitely ... read more

For our trip we had to get up just after five and be ready at six to leave for Pahang national Park. We had booked our trip the day before and thought that we would be in a group of around twenty people and so when our guide rolled up in his minibus at about quarter past and picked us up we were surprised that he was on his own. We snuck the question into conversation whether we would be picking anyone else up, and he said the answer was no and then explained that he was having some issues with his advertising strategies and that we were the first people to have responded fto him from a leaflet left at a hotel! Setting off on our drive of an hour and forty five miutes from ... read more

To start World Cup Final NIght went to the Menara Kuala Lumpur revolving restaurant in the Sky Tower. It was really good to see the city from so high up at night. The towers looked pretty impressive at night. The food was really nice and so was the service, us being called Mr. Jack and Ms. Rebecca all night from a waiter who asked everybody's names! Afterwards we went back to our hotel and had a nap because the world cup final didn't start until two in the morning Malaysian time. This turned out to be pretty hard to do because there was really load music coming from two streets away. In the end we decided to go out and see what was going on a little while before the match started at around half past ... read more

From Melaka, I got the bus to KL with 3 english guys (Dave, James & Harry) I met in Melaka, and although were were booked into different hostels, we met up the next morning to do the Petronas Towers sky bridge. They were great craic, and their company more than made up for an early start of 7am! One of the best things about my 4 days in KL was the food! I tried Roti Canai (sp?), really nice Indian tea, satay, otak, various kinds of fish balls on skewers, rambutan fruit, sticky rice...a real mix of chinese, indian and malaysian food :-) On Friday night, I went out for the proper local food experience with Hady, one of the managers of the hostel where I stayed (Equator hostel) and a friend of hers, who happened ... read more
