I wonder if I feel like the Indians when Chris C. landed his ships on their shores. I've been in Asia less than two months and I've already had to make two separate visits to the doctor for unexplained diseases. Speaking of which - although I haven't noticed whether my tongue is still white, I think not noticing is probably a sign of improvement because I feel like I would know if it still were. In my last entry I think we were in Kota Bharu, preparing for our early morning rise to get to the jungle. Well, we got to the train station and slept on the train for a couple of hours until we arrived at Dabong. We arrived around 10:30am, ate some breakfast and left our backpacks with the restaurant owners, and then ... read more

Well we finally finished up at work, cleaned the house and got ourselves to the airport. I've (Scott) fully recovered from my week and a half of the flu but unfortunately over the last few days Joy has not been feeling real good. Dosed up on drugs (thanks MK!) she got on the flight but it was not a very enjoyable experience for Joy as the climb and descent gave her a terrible sinus headache and did very weird things to her hearing, but we did manage to get a few hours sleep in between and arrived in KL at 5:30am. First impressions of KL are of an extremely modern city but it's still very much an asian city at the same time. Yesterday we went to the Petronas towers which are the 2nd and 3rd ... read more

Templer Park: 1200 hectares of primary rainforest 24 km north of Kuala Lumpur. According to my pre-trip information, to get there you catch the no. 66 bus from Puduraya station. Easy-peasy, for once. But no. I went across the road this morning to Puduraya. "No no, not from here. Go outside and down the street, and outside Kota Raya shopping complex you catch the bus to Templer Park." I went down to outside the Kota Raya shopping complex and asked around. No-one knew. Eventually I found the one bus driver who did. "No not from here. Go down this street and turn right and go to outside the Bangkok Bank, bus to Templer Park leaves from there. Metrobus no. 34" Okey-dokey. Did that, found no. 34. "No not me, bus in front." Having determined that the ... read more

Today was my first real birding foray into a semi-wild area, a place called Taman Pertanian, which means "Agricultural Park" which meant I was kind of expecting open country but the bit I was in turned out to be forest instead (which was better). It is on the outskirts of Shah Alam, west of KL. You can get there by either bus or taxi, so being tight I went for the bus. Of course the bus didn't leave from the Puduraya bus station right opposite my backpackers, it left from the Klang bus station. I got directions from the guy at the backpackers and set off. Having walked way too far along the first street (the tourist street map makes everything look deceptively far) I backtracked, found the next street and walked way too far along ... read more

Today I went to... the KL bird park and Zoo Negara (that's "National Zoo"). I went to a taxi stand to get a ride to the bird park, which the guy in the backpackers had said would cost 5 Ringgits. The taxi driver said 10, and I said forget it. Then another driver came along and says 7 so I say OK and off we go. When we get there (passing an awesome fountain shaped like pitcher plants) I only have 10 Ringgit notes so I give one to him and he just goes "thanks" and starts to put it away, so I say "that would be 7 Ringgits then" and he's like "oh, right". Everybody's always trying to cheat someone in Malaysia, and its usually me on the end of it. The bird park bills ... read more

Well it's been a very long time since our last update! We've done so much and we'll try to keep it as short as possible! After spending 3 glorious weeks on the beautiful Thai islands we headed down to Singapore to spend a week with friends. We had a fantastic time checking out the sights, experiencing the ex-pat way of life and re-introducing our selves to the bar scene! We found time for the mandatory Singapore Sling in Raffles, a tree top walk in the jungle, a night safari at the zoo and spending money we don't have at the big shopping centres down the Orchard Road! It was a great week and we can't wait to go back there for a few days before we jet of to Oz at the end of August. From ... read more

Well, I felt like I should probably get a move on, so I left Singapore this morning and caught the bus across the causeway to the mighty country of Malaysia. Yay. I was trying to get to Kuala Lumpur, and you know how it is when you're in a strange country and have no idea what you're doing. I did my best to ignore the taxi touts swarming round outside the customs area -- it wasn't too hard because I couldn't understand what half of them were saying -- but then I got waylaid by one slick dude who convinced me that there were no buses leaving for KL from there, I'd have to go to the bus terminal instead. In my defence, I am new to the ways of con-men. So we get in his ... read more

Ack! So much to talk about! We've been so busy, it seems every night we just crash from exhaustion. The hotels we have been staying at have been nice. Hot water and pillows that aren't as hard as a rock like the ones we had at the hostel the first night in Singapore. Our tour group is pretty cool. All young people around our age. We are the only Americans in the group of eleven. The others are British and there are two Swiss girls. I understand the Swiss girls, whose English is not perfect and have cute accents, but the British people.... I get lost everytime they start talking. I never thought I would have difficulty understanding another Westerner like I do with this group. But they kinda drink a lot so we don't exactly ... read more

So instead of hanging out on rarely-visited islands in Thailand, as was the plan, I just saw the world's tallest building(s) in Malaysia. How did this happen, you ask? Well, after my last entry I caught a boat from Koh Phi Phi to Krabi (I forgot to mention that I met a guy from Montrose, Co on the beach). This took longer than expected, and I ended up having to stay the night again in Krabi. It wasn't really a problem as I like that town much more than most people seem to. I got up early the next morning and got a bus to the southern city of Trang. I wandered around and finally found the office for Koh Ngai resort, on hopes of getting a boat out there. The weather would not allow boats ... read more

I know its been a while since I updated my blog but its just so hard to sit at a computer with so much to see and do! Going way back in time to Phuket we spent our days on the beach or traveling the countryside riding elephants, visiting waterfalls, whitewater rafting, and I was even attacked by monkeys. Even though I was exahausted I enjoyed spending the evenings with our English travel mates Mark & Carla & Chelsea when she felt game enjoying the finest cheap Thai beer and exploring the nightlife. I don't recomend Patong to anyone unless you enjoy the sights of girley boys in ALL their glory. Once we decided to leave Phuket (where we stayed for 6 nights) we traveled with our travel buddies Mark & Carla to Koh Pi Pi ... read more
