Hi all, hope you're all well. We're writing to you from a free Wi-Fi bar in Kho Phi Phi, Thailand. We've just had a nice breakfast and it looks like it may be sunny today....fingers crossed. Anyway, where did we leave off? I think we had just left Singapore..... We decided we'd like to take the jungle railway up to the north east of Malaysia so we spent a day travelling up to a place called Mentakab, via KL. Upon arrival, we checked into a hotel where the owner took a bit of a shine to us and she took us in the family car to find the railway station and and train times etc. Just as well as we probably wouldn't have found it. On the way back she stopped off and bought us coffee, ... read more

22 July 2008 Perhentian Island Early flight to KL and then on to Kota Bharu with Air Asia, the (better) asian equivalent of Ryan Air. While waiting for the boat transfer over to the islands, we realise we've left a handluggage bag ont the flight - containing snorkels, swimming gear, suncream, in short everything essential to our 5 days on the islands. A couple of hours later we hear they've located it and will get it to us the next day, amazing! The Perhentian Islands look just like tropical paradise islands should look. Palm fringed white sand beaches with a few wwoden huts on them with dense jungle rising behind. The sea is an amazing colour. Tuna Bayresort is a low key but well run bungalow resort, the rooms have aircon and hot water but are ... read more

As soon as we got off the bus in Kuala Besut we were ambushed by people trying to sell us boat tickets to the Perhentian Islands. We weren't sure if they were trying to rip us off and charge us more than they should, so we walked towards the pier with a couple we met on the bus (Khalid - from Qatar and Mira - from Malaysia). Surprisingly, everyone did actually charge the same price, including the guys that ran at our bus when we arrived. We got onto the boat and arrived at the Big Island (Perhentian Besar) at about 10:30. We were in two minds as to which island we should choose, but we had heard the accommodation was a much better standard on the big island so we all ended up hopping of ... read more

Lørdag 7. juni klokken 22.30 - 30 minutter forsinket ... read more

Despite my best intentions I haven’t been able to keep the site as up to date as I would have liked so this entry is a little bit outdated. Back in April I spent a week on the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia. It is an absolutely amazing place and every day was spent snorkelling or diving around the islands. Mass tourism is slowly making its way to the islands, but there is still a chance to enjoy the simple life. The snorkelling around the islands is awesome and all locations are easily accessible by the local boats. All the photos were taken with my waterproof camera (which thankfully lived up to its specifications). The camera was great underwater and hours were spent chasing camera shy clownfish. The highlight of the trip was swimming with Green Turtles ... read more

We’ve just arrived back from the Perhentian Islands after 10 relaxing days. For the first 8days we stayed at Coral Bay on the smaller of the two islands, it was nice and quiet compared to Long Beach on the other side of the island (where we had originally planned to spend 4 of the 8 nights). The beach itself was quite small and scattered with coral, unlike Long Beach where the beach was large and made up of white sand, but the atmosphere was much more relaxed and welcoming. As soon as we arrived we dropped our bags and went snorkeling but there wasn’t that much to see near the shore which was slightly disappointing. When we got out of the sea we started to walk back along the beach and got tangled in a really ... read more

I decided to go to Perhentian Island for some sun and sand. This island is found on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the South China Sea. Ahh-so beautiful! It took 2 plane-rides, 1 hour of taxi and 45 minutes of boat to get to this island. I am happy to say that this is where I completed my 100th dive! Apparently, tradition among divers is to celebrate this all important milestone by diving naked! But I am prude- what can I say and so decided not to follow through with this tradition ;) The dive crew were very gracious about my decision and instead, they invited to my very first full-moon party! I was so lucky to have accidently fallen on this annual event! No, I did not get lost from my group because ... read more

Date visited: 3rd-10/11th April The Island of Besar: 'Big Island' We boarded our express sleeper train at 1800 hrs from Singapore and got to our lower berth economy :( sleeping area where we would spend the next 14 hours. We hoped this decision would ease stress at the Malaysian/Singapore border, as going by bus would have meant getting off about 3 times with backpacks and queing long hours. Although we had to disembark once, it was much quicker than taking the bus. The evening for me passed quickly as I was racing through my captivating trilogy. By the time darkness fell I bedded down only to be disturbed by about 5 kids racing up and down the corridor screaming with excitement. Much to my utter dismay and disgust at the mother's lack of discipline this behaviour ... read more

From Koh Lanta we made Trang by minibus employing ferry two times in three hours. Having lunch there we transferred to another minibus and travelled another three hours for Hat Yai. Instead of 3 o’clock they put us to another minibus at 5 pm to Penang. At around 7 pm we were at the border under heavy rain. Almost no formalities at the border. We reached Penang at 10 pm in George Town. George Town is old part of Penang Island where one can feel the British colonial. Malaysia has developed a lot. It is like a western country with her highways, cars, buses. But the religion effect is dominant. In George Town we stayed at Mingood Hotel a little bit expensive ( 80 RM including breakfast and Wi-fi at room) but all the facilities provided. ... read more
