The end of February is the end of the Monsoon Season for an area including the Perhenthian Islands. It means that most places had only been open for a week or two when we visited and there were good deals around for sea facing accommodation along the beach cos the place was half empty. But it also means that it can rain and rain hard some days, which it did. We stayed at the Watercolors Dive Resort on the island of Besar. Staying there any brief feelings of satisfaction from the cash gains we made on low season rates were pretty much wiped out once we started to order drinks. They get you back on the price of fruit juices, beers, and coffee. But, they do make 'real' coffee, so it's nearly worth what they charge ... read more

The plan for today was to do nothing! Unfortunately when we woke up it was a bit overcast although still quite warm. We got some breakfast and decided to play a few games on the beach. You coulkd tell the sun was trying to push through the clouds but it wasnt quite strong enough. Rachael stayed on the beach most of the day with an occasional break for a swim and I mixed up the day by sitting in the cool of the air conditioned room or up on the balcony reading my book. Later on in the day i headed out for a swim and swam round to the next bay, it felt good to be back in the water but was a little harder than i remember! Later on in the evening when we ... read more

Today we had decided to check out of Maya's and move to the larger island of Besar. After saying our goodbyes we hopped into the taxi boat and sped over to Abdhuls Chalets. Alot more expensive but we wanted to live out our last few beach days in style, with air con at night! The chalets were great and nice and quiet. There was even a fenced off section in the water to swim in. We checked in and headed for the pretty much private beach. Here we lazed all day with Rachael getting very brown indeed. When it cooled off Rachael walked around the headland and into the next bay before I followed and met her on her way back. Here we sat on the rocks and watched the horizon, beautiful. That evening we ate ... read more

We headed to the Perintian Islands at 5am in a minibus from the banana G/H it was fab as it was just us so we had 3 seats each and the driver woke us when we got to the boat. we stayed on the larger of the 2 islands Perhintian Besar (the quieter island) we lounged on the beach and in the water and played with the frizbee all day and just relaxed. At dinner time henry had fresh caught snapper cooked on teh bbq and i had a veggie and lemon grass dish both were yummy. we chilled out with a group of people and had a few beers watching the beautiful sunset was amazing. Hi everyone! Hope everyone had a wonderful labor day! it was the malaysian independence day here on Sunday, and starting Monday, ramadan, with all the muslim majorities fasting for the next month. It's really amazing to me that they can't even drink water all day. seems almost dangerous. It means all the malay restaurants are closed, so food options are more limited : -( It’s Ju-Hyun’s birthday today! My dear college friend from Korea. She’s not even on this blog, but I will still post the msg ;-) some VERY exciting news for me! Next Saturday, on my way back to the states I have a 9 hour layover in Tokyo. I emailed my host family from back in 2001 and I'm planning to spend the day with them! Really excited! i have not seen their ... read more

We know titles have descended into silly-ness now, but to be fair its all nearly over now so we havn't got time to think of blog titles. We will be back in the UK in a week, its worrying to even say it. But hey we will save all those end of travels type messages for the final blog from Singapore we think... ...Anyway how are you readers? :) Hope you are all well and have been behaving yourselves while you've had no blogs the last few weeks to keep you entertained on those balmy British summer evenings! Believe it or not it has been raining a fair bit here too, though I doubt you have that much sympathy for us :) There are even more photos than usual in this blog as it the ... read more

I really need to spend a decent amount of time in a place to get a feel for it; simply hopping across the border to get that stamp in my passport really isn’t my ideal kind of travel. With that said, however, I am also not always big on returning to the same location either. It’s not that I don’t find most places interesting, but sometimes I feel that lingering too long (especially when on a budget) can come at the expense of covering new territory. It’s a big world, and striking that all important balance can be extremely difficult. However, when it came to returning to the Perhentian Islands there was absolutely no hesitation. Through happy chance, we were left with a spare week before beginning work in Indonesia, and so decided to pay ... read more
