We arrived in Sandakan in Sabah, called by the local people the 'Land Below the Wind' as it is geographically below the typhoon belt and after looking for a bus stop we took the easy option and caught a taxi to our hotel - the Seafront Hotel - which did surprisingly have a view of the sea. I think we were given one of the better rooms as it was large and comfortable and certainlAftery good value at 69RM a night which included the usual Western breakfast - an egg, coffee and slightly browned tasteless bread and jam. We set off to explore the town and it was very quiet and almost like Guangshui, but cleaner and with a Muslim population. We had noticed that the country around the city was very similar to North Qld. ... read more

Day 7 Monday, January 19, 2009 We arose at 5:30 a.m. to pack and prepare for our departure. The van was scheduled to pick us up at 6:30. The morning was perfectly picturesque. The air was cool. The water and skies were calm. Monkeys frolicked in the trees next to the B&B while a Pig Tailed Macaque tormented a dog at the house next door. We drank coffee and snacked on fried onion bread while Jamal, the middle aged Muslim owner/operator, cheerfully sang ‘Get Low’ upstairs. Oh, yeah, you heard me right: “Shawty had them Apple Bottom Jeans Boots with the fur The whole club was lookin at her She hit the flo Next thing you know Shawty got low low low low low low low low” Oh, Sukau, how I miss thee. The van picked ... read more

Day 6 Sunday, January 18, 2009 We got up at the butt crack of dawn to prepare for our 6:30 a.m. cruise. The clouds were heavy and opened up soon after our cruise began. I was wearing a poncho which helped keep me relatively dry, but Kim and Cara were soaked to the bone. Due to the heavy downpour there weren’t many critters out and about. I did manage to snap a hazy shot of an eagle and, of course, there were a few monkeys jumping around like, well, monkeys. After our wet and fruitless morning ride we returned to the B&B to dry off and munch down a simple but hot breakfast of French toast and pancakes. (aw, no butter or syrup!) We crawled back into bed for about two and half hours then got ... read more

Day 5 Saturday, January 17, we groggily and grumpily went down to the front desk to checkout and meet Nazim, the van driver that would take us to Sukau. Eric the KIAC and GAG were also busy packing up and getting ready to leave. Eric offered Cara and I some fruit near the front desk. I flatly refused for the both of us. He seemed dismayed at my less than cordial response and I realized that he either didn’t know I was from the room next door or didn’t remember anything from the previous night. It was then that I resolved to take the low road and give him the stink eye at every possible opportunity. We met Nazim by the corner KFC (they really are everywhere in Asia) and we wound our way through the ... read more

Polly: We woke up early on the Sunday morning, had a last speedy full English breakfast, then hightailed it up the hill in Semporna to the bus station. Our bus left at 8am and took about five hours to reach Sandakan. The bus drive was fairly uneventful apart from having the Chuckle Brothers sat up the front distracting the driver and snorting with laughter the whole journey. The bus station in Sandakan is a couple of miles out of the main town so we shared a taxi with another traveller and got dropped off in the centre. Apart from the weekend market, Sandakan was a bit of a ghost-town, with every shop shut for the day. We found a room easily at the Winho hostel, which was basic but clean, and included unlimited free toast, butter ... read more

Day 3 Thursday, January 15, we had a lazy morning then headed back to the airport for a 1:10 flight to Sandakan on the other side of the island. It was the shortest flight I've ever taken: only about 40 minutes! By the time we got up to cruising altitude it was time to come back down. We didn't even get a chance to power up our iPods. We checked in at our hostel, Sandakan Backpackers, and decided it was worth a couple extra dollars to switch from a six bed mixed dorm to a three bed private dorm. The six bed dorm was tiny and had two antisocial British guys already there. As far as hostels go Sandakan Backpackers is just 'okay'. It's clean enough and the location is good. Beyond that it's a little ... read more

The bus pulled in and the driver told us this was our destination. I could see a sign for the ‘rose cabin’ (our hostel of choice) and so we jumped off. The bus slowly chugged round the corner and I looked at the sign again ‘Rose Cabin - 2 kilometres’. Damn. The bus had dropped us off at the Mount Kinabalu national park, rather than the hostel we’d asked the driver to stop at. There followed another walk in the midday sun and with our full backpacks on. You might be wondering at this point why, when the reason we were up here was to see the national park, we’d opted to stay 2 kilometres away? Well, let me have a little rant… We spoke to a Dutch couple when we arrived at the hostel and ... read more

The word Orangutan literally translates in Malay to "the people of the forest." For centuries these creatures have held a special place in the hearts of natives living throughout SE Asia, and being in their presence on our visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center it was easy to see why. The SORC was set up to take in orphaned orangutans or ones who have been displaced by habitat loss and introduce them to the skills they will need to live on their own in the wild. The center either prepares and/or re-releases them into a forest reserve twice the size of Singapore where they eventually live on their own as true wild orangutans. The orangutan was once found all across SE Asia, however today they only exist on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because ... read more
