On 1st January 2011, me and my friends (all 16 pax) spent trekking in Tawai FR to reach the beautiful waterfall as one of our youth outdoor activity. The trail is followed by logging trek, which abandoned a few years. Actually, no guide accompanied us but we still going on it, as we planned. Some of us ever been here before, still not confident the way. Set-off from starting point at 9.18am, after passed through folk's oil palm, rubber and paddy farm and finally the old small bridge, little bit tilted. A few minutes from starting point we lost.....because there were 3 junction treks. We went to 2nd trek...actually the 1st one. We noticed that we reached the right way on noon at the slope hill. No regretted lost on the way because we found the ... read more

Well I finally got a good night sleep last night. We all went to bed around 8 and never woke up untill around 9 or 10 this morning. We lazed about in the morning then jumped on the 1pm bus to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to go see the monkeys. When we got there they showed us a brief video of their efforts in rehabilitating the monkeys to the wild. Then we headed out to the feeding platform to see them. When we got there there were no monkeys but slowely the macaques started to arrive. There were alot of them and they were jumping around and playing all over the platforms. At 3 OClock the feeding guy came with some buckets of food and chased away the macaques. WE waited for a bit and eventually ... read more

After being in the wilderness for five days, we hailed down a bus to Sandakan. We enjoyed the relative luxury of having hot showers and going out to eat! On our first day, we headed to the famous Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. This is the most popular place in the world for tourists to see Orangutans. We were really excited about seeing these 'men of the jungle' in action and went early for the morning feed. From a viewing platform, we saw rehabilitating Orangutans emerging from the trees for a feast of fruit and vegetables. This is the first of many platforms that gradually go further into the rain forest with aim of Orangutans eventually leaving the feeding platforms and living back in the wild permanently. We were lucky enough to see a mother and her ... read more

Riki decided that we would stay in a place called strawberry hotel near the Kinabalu National Park , so we headed to the long distance bus station where we encountered our first experience of aggressive touts, everyone yelling and screaming where you go? Trying to take our bags and who knows what else as even if we wanted to use their services it was so chaotic that it was impossible. We finally made our way to the counter and got our tickets, we told the bus driver to drop us at Kundesang a town nearby the hotel, to our surprise the bus drove past our hotel and continued down the road for a while before it dropped us off in the middle of nowhere, we decided to head to a closer hotel which turned to be ... read more

We left Selingan Turtle Island at 7am for the 1 hour boat trip back to Sandakan. Our Taxi driver (Jad), who we had used all the time we were in Sandakan was sat waiting for us. We didn't have any accommodation booked for this evening so spent the next 15 minutes driving around trying to find somewhere for the night. Whilst on the trip to Turtle Island The Mayfair Hotel (actually hostel, which looked pretty discusting from the outside) was recommened to us, unfortunateley this was fully booked. According to Ange, it looked much better on the inside! Jad told us to try the Nak Hotel (same owners as Paganakan Dii), luckily there was a room available. We spent a couple of hours resting in our room and then decided to tackle the 'Sandakan Heritage Trail'. ... read more

We were picked up from Paganakan Dii at 7.30am for our 50 minute car journey to Sanadakan, where we would be catching a speedboat to Selingan (Turtle Island). Selingan Island is one of a group of uninhabited islands straddling the Malaysian and Philippine boundaries lying within the Sulu Seas. This cluster of islands namely three main nesting islands - Pulau Selingan, Pulau Bakkungan Kechil and Pulau Gulisan, covers an area of 1,740 hectares and are protected for the sole purpose of conservation and preservation of turtles and other marine animals inhabiting the area. Luckily Jane was feeling much better today, although her rash was still there, she wasn't feeling as upset with it. We arrived 45 minutes early for our speedboat trip as we had to go into the offices (hut on the jetty) of the ... read more

Today we arranged to go on the free shuttle from Paganakan Dii to the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary and the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Jane still wasn't feeling too well today, due to the heat and her rash and we were unsure if she would make the trip. The shuttle left at 9.30am and Jane decided to go but would get a taxi back if she started to feel worse. Sepilok is one of the centres dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned orang-utans. There is a quarantine centre and a 'kindergarten' where young orang-utans are 'shown the ropes' by human trainers. When they graduate, they are released to an area of forest where they are fed twice a day. The feeding of the semi-wild Orang-utans takes place at 10am and 3pm. The feeding platform was a liitle walk through the ... read more

We arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 9.30am and to take us to the Gomantong Caves and then to Paganakan Dii, Sanadakan, were we would be stayiing for 2 nights. The caves were a 30 minute drive from TLFL followed by a 10 minute walk through the rainforest. The Gomantong Caves are an intricate cave system inside Gomantong Hill. The main cave system is divided into two parts: the more accessible Simud Hitam (Black Cave), and the larger Simud Putih (White Cave) which lies above. The names refer to the main type of nests produced by swiftlets in each cave. The cave system is home to many other animals, including massive populations of cockroaches and bats. The caves have been renowned for their valuable edible swiftlet nests, which are harvested for bird's nest ... read more

We awoke at 5.30am ready for our Air Asia flight to Sandakan at 7.15am. Sandakan is the second-largest city in Sabah, on the north-eastern coast of Borneo. The area is infamous as the site of a World War II Japanese airfield, built by the forced labour of 6,000 Javanese civilians and Allied prisoners of war. In 1945, the surviving Australian prisoners were sent on the Sandakan Death Marches; only 6 of them survived the war. The flight to Sandakan took 2hrs 30mins, which seemed to take longer than our flight from Stanstead to KL! After 45 minutes we had gone through passport control, collected our luggage and had a 20 minute taxi ride to our hotel. We were staying at the Swiss Inn, which is situated in the new part of Sandakan on the harbour front. ... read more
