We had a few hours to pack our bags ready for our early morning flight into Kota Kinabalu before we were off to see the fireflies. A local called Askme arrived to pick us up and took us to his village which his grandfather was the first occupier of. He took us to his house and introduced us to his family and gave us coconuts from his tree to drink and eat. Then he took us down to his village, when we arrived at the closed down charcoal furnace there were kids plating along the river everywhere. There was a little boy and girl and I took their picture and showed them, they were amazed and within two minutes there were about ten kids wanting their photo’s taken! Tel being tel felt awful we didn’t have ... read more

We left the hostel at 10.00am to be taken to the jetty where we would be whisked off to seligan, turtle island for the day and night. The journey started off pretty grey and overcast but as we got closer the clouds broke and the sun almost came through. On arriving at the island we could see the turtle tracks up the beach and were hopeful of some sightings later. We spent the afternoon on the beach and got ready for the evening's excitement. We started at 6 with a film on the life of green and hawksbill turtles and the amazing conservation work they are doing on the island. After the film we settled in for dinner and then the eat began. While we were eating we met a lovely Swedish couple who had come ... read more

well folks i wrote before but the electricity went down in Tawua and i lost the whole story so lets get back on track. I am sure i wrote about the great shop house accross the road from us in the market in China town where we ate the best noodle soup and we only found it by looking out of our window as the street is so crowed with hawkers in the market you cant see the shops unless you are lucky to walk right by it. As it is still part of the Chinese New Year celebrations there were whole pigs big ones and baby ones roasted for sale. the baby ones went home whole but the big ones got sliced up. We also went to the bird park but once you have been ... read more

Hi folks! After having spent almost a month in the Philippines(with a brief stop in Tokyo,Japan) backpacking with my good friend Trevor I have now embarked on the cycling aspect of my trip! Had an amazing time hiking, boating along a subterreanean river, snorkelling reefs, and YES snorkeling up very close and personal with the mighty butanding(whale sharks)!! The Phillipines is definitely a special place which I enjoyed immensely and have even had thoughts about spending part of my retirement there each year. I know, I know-it's a little early for that-lol! Although I'm bunking in the same dorm with Larry from Arizona who retired 20 yrs ago at the age of 36! An interesting character with long hair and beard who lives very simply and travels around with only a very small daypack and has been ... read more

Back in Malaysian Borneo, the next few days were about spotting primates and stuffing ourselves full of food. Arriving in Kota Kinabalu an hour after sunset, we made our way straight to the night market for dinner, meandering past rows and rows of fresh produce to arrive at the dining tables. We took a good 20 minutes to work out which of all the delicious-looking food we'd eat, deciding on a huuuuuuuuuge barbecued parrot fish, some prawns and a giant bowl of mee goreng, prepared by a guy proficient in the art of tossing a full pan of noodles high in the air while making small talk. We waddled back to our hotel feeling like we'd never eat again but, of course, we did it all again the next night. From there, it was off to ... read more

When i get to Melbourne its straight to the hairdressers! So how did i get from Phi Phi to here? Well after my last blog entry i headed off to speak to Paul about taking Shaggy the dog back to the main land.
