Monday 28th January 2008 Today we are going to the base of Mount Kinabalu, the Highest Mountain between the Himalayas and somewhere in Paupa New Guinia (Please ignore my spellings) 4095.2m tall! So we get up and have to walk back up to Sapinggi's father's house, but this time we go to his new house for breakfast. We have the best pineapples I've ever had, they were grown in the village and they're so fresh! It most deffinatly puts our 'fresh' fruit to shame! Then we went for a short walk around Kiau to help us prepare for the big climb tomorrow! To be honest it wasn't very hard and suprisingly flat! But the views were stunning! Then we drove to Mount Kinabalu Park which is a world heritage site! We stayed in very swanky chalets ... read more

Having sat on the beach for a week in Langkawi, had a wander around Georgetown in Penang for a few days, and spent 3 days in KL (we're going back there shortly!), we thought we'd better do some exercise so we headed off to Kinabalu National Park. This is home to the 5th highest mountain in SEA and biggest in Malaysia - Mount Kinabalu. Day One The day we arrived we checked in and paid the various fees for entrance into the park, the guide, climbing permit and insurance. We then had an orienteering meeting in the evening where they explained what was going to happen over the two days that we would spend on the mountain. One of the main messages that they wanted to get accross to everybody was that they should take enough ... read more

The National Park leaflets for Mount Kinabalu proudly describe it as "The highest mountain in South-East Asia", but then put in brackets " (not including Papua)". This is a sneaky and cheeky way to boost it's reputation. It's like saying "Madonna is the biggest selling female artist in the world (not including Mariah Carey)". Or, "I am the fastest runner in the world (not including Ben Johnson, Lynford Christie.. etc)" The reason for excluding Papua is that the three highest mountains are found here. So technically, Mount Kinabalu is the fourth highest, which is far less impressive. However, it does stand 4,101m tall, and I climbed.it. And let me tell you, it's no pushover. (I could have just written 4,100 metres for the height instead of 4,101m, but the last metre was the most difficult to ... read more

One of the primary reasons for my visit to Sabah was to climb Mt Kinabalu. At 4,095m, it is the highest peak in the area and therefore worthy of the effort - and the amount of effort I significantly underestimated! Rather than climb up to the peak and back the same way, our group started from the west on the Mesilau trail which is 2 km longer but much prettier than the Summit Trail. So Day 1 consisted of an 8 km trip to Laban Rata. I thought 4 hours would be a good estimate of the time required. I was wrong, so very wrong. It took me 8 hours to reach our accommodation for the night. The path was reasonably steep and certainly required some good cardiovascular fitness that I do not possess. However, the ... read more

Been there, almost done that! Massut tyhjinä, reput selässä ja luottokortti armoa huutaen pyörähdimme pankkiautomaatin kautta taksilla hostellin isäntämme suosittelemalle bussiasemalle, josta piti lähtemän b... read more

Day 207 (18.10.07) (2 pages of pics on this one - make sure you see them all!) We spent the morning catching up on some stuff using the cheap internet in Ranau and then managed to flag a coach down from the main road to take us to the entrance to the Kinabalu National Park which would be the starting point for our mountain climb. Mount Kinabalu, at 4095m, is regarded as the 'highest mountain in SE Asia' although it is actually the third highest mountain with others topping it in Indonesia. Every year Mount Kinabalu hosts a climbathon where incredibly fit athletes run up and down the mountain. The record for the men is held by Ricardo Mejia from Mexico in a time of 2 hours and 37 minutes. We would be climbing it in ... read more

Mt Kinabalu has always been referred to by the natives as an ancestral resting place which the word Aki meaning grandfather and nabalu means big boulders connect the words and you get akinabalu. On this gruelling day of terror (and the following day) three Englishmen and an Irishman decided to climb a mountain, Mount Kinabalu to be exact. There was me representing March, Cambridgeshire, Paul, Grantham Town in erm... Lincholnshire, Neil from somewhere in North London that I've never heard of but I'm assured it's quite famous and Steve from lets just say somewhere near Dublin. Neil was a new addition to the team, I'd already met both Paul and Steve on my previous travels and we had all agreed to meet up in Borneo to defeat this big bastard together. The Mountain is 4,095 metres high (13, 435 feet) and the trail to the peak is 8.85 Kilometres, I was originally led to believe that is was the highest mountain in South East Asia as that's what all ... read more

Well I'm on Borneo. Main land Malaysia was a little to rainy so I decided to see what Borneo has to offer. Flew to Kota Kinabalu in the region of Sabah. the big thing to do here is hang out on the beautiful beaches or take a 2 day trek to the top of Mt. Kinabalu. Mt Kinabalu at 4095m is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. It's a 2 day climb. Day 1 you go 6km from altitude of about 1000m to 3000m. At this point there are huts waiting for you. to spend the night. Actually half night You get up at 2AM to climb the remaining 2.7km or 1000m alt. in the dark. This is so you can be at the summit at sunrise. If you ever thought you were ... read more

1.5 hours from Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu reaches half the height of Everest into the sky, yet its peak is achievable by anyone with some fitness and no climbing ability. Kundasang is the closest town to the National Park in which Mount Kinabalu sits, and a bus journey got us there first thing in the morning. The top of the mountain was completely covered in cloud and over the 2 days we were in the area we experienced the micro-climate that it creates, with sun and clear skies giving way to mist and rain, and vice versa, alarmingly quickly. Decent accommodation was all booked for our first night, and we ended up in a miserable roach motel where my right flip flop had reached double figures in kills in the evening before we turned off the ... read more
