Hello all ( Sorry no pics, do not have the facilities or the time to add any pictures today so you will have to wait for those.) N e way, i was sent on my community phase to a small village called Sosondoton, just in the foot hills of Mont Kinabalu, it is am amazing little village, and not quite so hot as we were based quite high up. The project was to build a water graviety system,so as to increase the pressure to the original system. we therefore had to build a dam at the new source - 2.5 km up a massive hill from the orginal source. it was am amazing project, the dam was made from 3 gabions (-which we had to fill with rocks very heavy work 100 meters up a ... read more

Well we're having a great time here in Borneo. Been up to all sorts, but just going to tell you about our big trip for now, as it's quite a long one and I'm sure some of you have been worried about us (hi parents!). DAY ONE - 7am It was raining, so we bundled into a mini bus with our driver Jak. We only started to panic slightly during the two hour drive to the National Park when Jak let slip that he works two jobs and hadn't slept for the last 24 hours! (He's a big coffee drinker!) DAY ONE - 9am Still rainng, but all was good as we arrived at the park and met our minimal english-speaking guide Tony - or so we thought that was his name, but realised 36 hours ... read more

Tue 9th Apprehensively I met the others for breakfast at 8am. I found out that 2 had dropped out of the climb and so it was now just Dee and I doing the summit trail. The others all got in the buss and off they went to do the 8km Mesilau trail. So with Dee as my private guide we set off. She gave me 2 invaluble peices of advice. Go really slow- even on the flat bits and take really small steps. As most of it is large stairs it ment finding boulders to use as half way steps. It was 6km to the overnight rest house and 1382mt climb ending at 3272mts above sea level. There were 8 rest huts along the way and I only sat down to rest at these. I was ... read more

Sun 7th Lay intill 10 then went and bought some last min supplies- warm gloves for the mountain and choc bars for energy. At 1pm we laoded our bags onto the bus and drove for an hour then changed to 4x4s for a very bumpy journey further into the hillside to KiauNulu. Where we were welcomed by a dance show put on by 12 twelve year olds. It was very cute and reminded me of country danceing perfmances at school. There were accompanied by gongs simmilar to the ones I took Kingfishers to play last year. At 5pm we climbed 10 min up the mountain side (now 1000mtrs up) for dinner at our guide's (Pingi) fathers house. This was followed by rice wine where you get 2 fingers of rice wine to down and then tip ... read more

Mat: Mount Kinabalu is Sabah's biggest draw card. Its tall, its climbable, there are fantastic views, lots of people give it a crack. We did. Standing at 4095m it is a good head taller than Mt Cook in NZ (3764m). Being in the tropics however means that any punter with an urge to walk straight up and straight down in two days can have a go. I don't really know what proportion of people actually get to the top, but someone mentioned it was only 50/50. You have to hire a guide in case it turns nasty, but compared with something like Mt Cook, Mt Kinabalu is just a big goofy labrador. At the summit the coldest it normally gets is 0 degrees. Sooo, we stayed at park headquarters on the night of the 3rd of ... read more

Mel and I are just back from our 2-day climb of Mount Kinabalu - the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, 4,100m high. SO SO hard, oh my god. All I can say is that I am in absolute AGONY. I have never experienced bodily pain like this and it was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done in my life, and I honestly struggled every single step of the way. The first day began at 8am, and involved a 6-hour uphill climb to a resthouse up the mountain. 6-hours may not seem long but it was literally steep uphill ALL the way - it was unrelenting and the altitudes meant we were contantly out of breath and lightheaded and every step was a massive effort for me. Luckily we had a great guide who ... read more

So the trip starts once again. After landing in back in Borneo I decided not to rough it and checked into the Hyatt to have a relaxing day or two before attemting this 4100m mountain. Room service of steak and chips helped me settle back into the Malay way of life. I was severley jet lagged but had no choice to climb it two days after my arrival since the mountain accomoation was fully booked until the end of October. I left KK at 7am on Monday for the mountain. I hooked up with an English mountaineer to do the climb with and share the cost of the guide. The first day climb was the hardest and we managed to do it in about 3 and a half hours. Not bad as the average is 5 ... read more

The night spent on the floor of the Jakarta Airport was soon to be rewarded with a very fun, rewarding week. After a short layover in Kuala Lumpur, we flew to Kota Kinabalu. It is a very nice little city. Not a small town, the way I love, but an extremely homey city. We caught a cab towards the downtown area to find a hostel. After looking around for a bit we found the friendly Borneo Backpackers. My brother Robert was a bit frustrated after we found out that it would not be as easy as he thought to see the Rafflesias (the giant bornean flowers). We walked around for a bit to see the surroundings. We decided to check out the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. I tried to stay up for ... read more

Mt Kinabalu Mt Kinabalu, at 4200m, is the highest mountain in South East Asia, hugely spectacular, and a bloody hard climb. 5 July 2006 I was picked up at the ungodly hour of 0630 (I get up late in cities) in Kota Kinabalu for the two hour ride up to 1800m where we would begin the climb. Climbing with me was Vong, a Scot of Chinese descent, and a Malaysian-Singaporean couple who weren’t destined to make it to the top. We stopped to get registered at the ranger HQ and hotel where I devoured a cheese cake and most of the biggest mountain of fake cream I have seen in my life. I felt a bit nauseous but was glad of the sugar ahead of the supposedly three hour climb to our mountain lodgings at 3200m. ... read more
