The cough and cold we all have is dragging on, so we rose late and then it was a scramble to get downstairs and wolf down breakfast. We knew we had a 4 1/2hr journey so my daysack turned into a poachers bag and was filled with pastries, breads, apples etc. The coach journey to Penang in the North turned into a bit of a marathon it was 8 hours later when we arrived in our hotel. Good learning for the future is to ask which buses are non-stop. The poachers bag was now empty.... Hotel Noordin Mews is an old colonial house in Georgetown, another UNESCO world heritage site. The kids were hungry so we nipped out to the local shopping mall, but there was nothing suitable. A 7 Eleven corner shop had to do ... read more

Ok so I was dreading the next part of the journey, having decided we wanted to see some of Malaysia the question was how to travel. As you know our main plan was to take a train wherever possible, but to train it meant going backwards to Surat Thani (you remember that awful 3 bus, 5 hour bus ride!), and I’m not for travelling backwards! So we needed a bus, and we knew it was going to take about 8-10 hours. Our mantra became, let’s just ‘suck it up’ and try and enjoy the scenery. What a pleasant surprise, yes we were taken to a bus station, where we were duly labelled (stickers) with ‘Penang’, and where we met up with about 12 others also labelled with the same destination. A 5 hour drive in a ... read more

Tuesday 23rd February 2016 Awoken again by the dogs howling it wasn't long before we were up and leaving our wooden bungalow for the bus station. We boarded the bus and after a smooth 5 hours on the bus we arrived at the island of Penang which is located in the north west of Malaysia. We are staying in an area called George Town, which is actually the capital of this state and is also a UNESCO world heritage site, similar to Melaka where we'd visited a week ago. When we arrived at the bus station we flagged down a taxi and he took us to the hostel we were booked into, called Magpie Residence. Upon checking into our 8 bed dorm room we were very pleased to see that the whole place looked clean and ... read more

Rob Writes: It was time to leave KL. We had arranged a bus from the TBS, KL’s large bus station which is situated to the south-east of the city, about an hour away by various means of transport. We had to get the monorail from where we were staying in Bukit Bingtang, to KL Sentral, and from there a direct train to TBS. Our bus wasn’t until about 11:30 if I remember correctly, but we set off at about 9 just in case we took the wrong train, almost hit by a car, or something similar again. By the time we got there and got our tickets we didn’t have much time to spare, with no more than ten minutes or so before the bus was due to arrive. The bus was about twenty minutes late, ... read more

Our second visit to Penang was better than our first, we found a nicer guesthouse called just inn which was kept super clean and was quiet :) we got the free Cat bus there :) It's so handy as you can get it right near the boat pier :) We took the bus out to Penang hill and rode the funicular to the top. We were rewarded with a stunning view over Penang :) We decided to walk back down to the gardens, on our way down we met several monkeys, one of whom decided to run at me,thinking he didn't like the paparazzi or that my phone was food but I escaped unharmed lol! We reached the bottom after a time and were too tired to explore the gardens! We took the bus back to ... read more

1.5 years in Kuala Lumpur and I still hadnt been to Penang. Most people found this offensive, so I finally found a nice long weekend that would allow me to visit this historic island. 5o minutes on a plane and we touched down on the unexpectadly rugged island of Penang. There a few accommodation options, depending on what you’re after. Most people opt to stay in the oldest corner of the island; Georgetown. As did we. Famous for it’s maze of streets and alley ways, the place has more recently attracted attention for its street art and I was excited to wonder. And wonder we did! The place is made for this pasttime and it is what you will see most of the tourists doing around town. A lot of the action is centred around the ... read more

We bought our tickets at the ferry terminal saving us a few ringgit rather than buying it from our guest house :) We had a tasty breakfast of yummy pastries from Bread Story and boarded our boat for George Town Penang. The journey passed quickly as a James Bond movie played on the screen and the views out to see were pretty. We arrived in George town in the early afternoon and set about finding a place to lay our heads. A lot of the places were booked up so do book Malaysia in advance! We found a place but it wasn't great! We took the free CAT bus around the town and out to the mall for a spot of shopping :) There were three big malls all next to each other so I had ... read more

A boat from Langkawi, a next stop for Sam, Becca and me. Love lane, beach street, church road - romantic, stirred, eclectic. A line of mosques, churches, synagogues, temples.. Turn to music, spices, iron work twists, turn to see murals on walls. Little India, China Town. Meander; bright blues, mint, wooden panes, cobbled lanes skyscrapers, shop-houses, crumble. Chinese dragons, colonial frames. Wooden planks out to the sea; Fishermen under bulbs, look out to ships. Friends made from Sudan; coffee, temple & live music trips. Sam performing lyrics, with a Marley alike on guitar, Noodles, rotti, prawns, masala. Lanterns in paper, crafts in wood, smoking incense. Doodling in China House, cake picks, creative spirits. Mazes of art, music swirls, pulling tastes. George Town, Penang.... read more
