After leaving the KL in Malaysia we ran to the bus station and headed down to Maleka still in Malaysia. Meleka is a 400 year old city that has been colonized by the Chinese, Portugese and English during its history. After getting there, wondering around for about an hour looking for a place to stay we settled on a hotel next to the bay. It wasn't anything special but it had a real shower. IE it was more than a hot water heater hung opposit from the toilet. (Motel 6 is luxurious, even with its small towels). In attempt to find an internet cafe we ended up at a great little guest house with a colorful assortment of travelers and decided to stay there the next night. I introduced myself to the group around the table ... read more

From Singapore, I negotiated my first bus trip to Melaka, which my Lonely Planet described as "sultry", i.e. incredibly sweaty! It's a really well preserved town which has seen a lot of "invasions" over the years, but maybe a little too touristy. I went to the People's museum, which was quite good and I pottered about Chinatown, where I sampled Chicken Rice Balls, which I think is local to the area. Stayed in the Kancil Guest House, which is a converted Chinese townhouse run by a guy called Daod and his pal Charlie - both of whom really like a good, long chat! Daod has travelled all over the place and taught me lots about Hinudism. Anyway...aside from some of my laundry disappearing from the line, I really liked it - v chilled out and lots ... read more

23 June 2006 Great big shite KL to wonderful little Malacca I started the day by watching Italy get a penalty in the 95th minute of the game. What a way to start the day. I slept for about five hours and was up at 9am for a chat with Azmi. Azmi, according to him, is a Malaysian born New Zealander whose father retired there after serving as military attaché to Wellington. Azmi also let on that he was given an 80 foot yacht as a retirement present by the Indonesian government. Azmi, apparently, was a commercial diver for a time before setting up an adventure tour company in New Zealand and now has over a hundred employees working for his dive operation, hotel, white water rafting, trekking, abseiling, and rock climbing businesses. Or so he ... read more

25 June 2006 Tourist traps around Malacca The Swiss guys we met in told us that Mini-Malaysia and the butterfly/bird/monkey/reptile park were worth the trip, so we decided to spend the day as proper camera-toting tourists. We managed to get about twenty metres from the guesthouse when we encountered a reasonably sized crowd and traditional band, all waiting expectantly. The crowd had reached critical mass (the point at which the crowd alone attracts curious passersby and tourists who join the crowd because there must be something worth looking at) so of course we joined it. There was a Chinese temple dedicated to some dead guy who had played some important role in history, including discovering Australia in the fifteenth century, 300 years before Captain Cook discovered it in English. Apparently the Prime Minister was due any ... read more

As soon as we crossed the border between Singapore and Malaysia, we could feel a lot of the difference between these countries. From the urban setting of Singapore to the rural parts of Malaysia, I felt a lot more at ease with the simplicity here. I am a simple person. The vegetation during the trip reminded me a lot of home in Brasil. We arrived at the bus station in Melaka around 9pm. Took a cab to the central part of town to look for shelter. Communication is getting a bit harder, but we managed to find a nice, simple little guesthouse, with an air-conditioned room (the heat is nearly unbearable at night). I had a nice time talking to one of the owners, while watching the rerun of the Brasil game. The people here seem ... read more

Sunday, we packed up the Proton Wira (Malaysian made car) and headed across the peninsula to Malacca on the west coast. The route that we took sent us through more oil palm estates and rubber plantations than we could count but the road was not very crowded aside form the occasional truck that we had to overtake. Lots of small towns on the way since we were not on the expressway but the old roads. By avoiding KL and taking a southern route we missed all of the traffic there. The trip took about 4 hours putting us in Malacca town at about 3:30pm. We got there just in time to check in at the Baba House (I’ll explain more about that in a minute) and have me zoom off to the express bus terminal to ... read more

Selamat Detang everyone Welcome to Malaysia, its early days and we are right on the tourist trail, and so far everyone has been very friendly and helpful. After a very long trip traveling the relatively short distance from the city of Singapore to Melaka in Malaysia, the time being taken by having to queue to get through customs!! Arriving in the historic town of Melaka, we found a very clean and friendly place to stay called Trekkers Lodge, the staff very friendly and helpful, towels are provided but no top sheet, this has to be hired separately!! (we live and learn). Although we’d read up about Melaka before arriving, it didn’t prepared us for the history of the place and it's been fascinating as well as a gourmets delight, well perhaps not quite, but the food ... read more

On a whim we decided we needed to see a little more of Malaysia than just KL, so we jumped on a bus to Melaka. An absolutely beautiful place, about 2 hours drive by bus from Kuala Lumpur. In Melaka, the influence of the Portugese, Dutch and British is still plain to see. Quaint little shops and multi-coloured trishaws are all over the place... Of course, the trishaws have sub-woofers installed somewhere amongst the floral decorations - and they play Beyonce and the like - which we found quite amusing!! :)... read more

Melaka is the first settlement in Malaysia dating back to the 1500's. It has an old european town feel to it, largely due to the fact that the Dutch were the first ones here. It also happens to be the hottest place we have been in quite sometime, even compared to the beach. At least there we had the ocean to cool off in! Even still we have been outside a fair bit just walking around town. Last night we attempted to go to a sounds and light show without realizing that it was a holiday here sowe will try again tonite. Instead we went to China town and perused the markets and had a bite to eat. It's a good thing my pack is full, no more purchases! But this China town does not even ... read more
